Hey everyone,
I just have a question about the Canada Cup. When is the next one and where is it? Does it happen every 5 years? I know the last one was in 2004 when Canada defeated Finland.:help:

There is no more Canada cup. There hasn't been a Canada Cup since like... the 80s if I'm not mistaken.

Haha, yeah, pretty much, the Canada Cup seems dead. We'll see the World Cup or something similar to that.

They won't be holding any more Canada / World Cup's as long as the NHLers are participating in the Olympics.

My bet is there will be a World Cup in 2014. After the 2010 Olympics the NHL will wise up and stop participating in the Olympics.

.. which would lead to lots of topline eastern european NHLers ending up in the KHL, since they want to win the most treasured price in hockey, the gold medal in the olympics.

That would be fine by me. I would love for the world of hockey to operate exactly like world football. Where players transfer clubs, switch leagues, win different titles in different nations, and first and foremost, develop and maintain their local hockey programs.

Since when is Olympics gold the most treasured prize anyways? I always thought Europeans were after the IIHF World Championships?

Anyways, my point, regardless of who values what at present, is that the IIHF, the NHL and all the Euoropean federations need to work together to establish a hockey World Cup that is an independent event and not a part of a two week ski, sled and skate competition.

Olympics is the biggest. With the World Champs comes the chance to represent your country as well though.

Nah, I very much doubt the IIHF is bigger than the olympics for any european country. The olympics matter more since it's more rare and it usually has the best players avaliable from each country, so there's much more prestige in the olympics.

Well not usually. Recently it has the best players; but that wasnt the case before 1998.

I just dont think any sports league that takes itself seriously (and wants other to do so as well) should be taking a bream mid-season for an international tournament.

Well of course, but that was 10 years ago so I obviously mean from today, and with "usually" meant that unless they're hurt or decline for some reason (or if the GM picks the wrong guys!)
