A free agent at noon today, Brendan Shanahan isn't going to glue a Bluetooth to his ear in anticipation of the call that probably won't come from the Blueshirts.
Rather, The Post has been told to expect the 39-year-old winger to go home again - home to New Jersey to complete the circle of his first-ballot worthy Hall of Fame career that commenced with the Devils in 1987-88.
If Shanahan does indeed rejoin the Devils, for whom he played from 1987 through 1992, before going to St. Louis as a free agent, he would be expected to improve a power play that was ranked 25th overall last season while likely skating right wing at even strength with either John Madden or Travis Zajac.

Just a case of Brooks writing for coverage.
If it does happen though, boy, that would be strange.
HBK27 07-01-2008, 06:52 AM Post is also saying that Lou has talked with Campbells agent already (with permission) and also mentions Mike Commodore, Brendan Morrison, Jason Williams as other possibilities.

1 year deal...improve the powerplay. Might not be terrible. Hopefully he's more of a fallback option though.
pierreification 07-01-2008, 06:56 AM but how much does he have left in his tank?
Almost nothing. Ranger fans only want him back in a 4th line role and no more than like $1m.

2nd Powerplay duties, EV with Mad Dog?
He did score 22 (?) goals this past season, he has something keeping him going.
More to the point, this would make us fairly stacked at RW. :help:

Das Uber 07-01-2008, 08:47 AM I haven't been paying attention to the drama at MSG, but it seems that the Rags snubbed Shanny as far as his role with the team goes or just flat out told him they didn't want him back. Either way, I'm sure he and his family are settled and I doubt he wants to relocate them again. If he's willing to take a pay-cut or incentive laden contract to stay in the tri-state area, and can accept a 3rd/4th line role, I'd give him a shot. If not, he can go **** himself.

Shanny's speed was never one of his strengths, and now it's pretty much completely gone. The guy could probably still be a decent PP specialist if utilized correctly (i.e., not how the Rangers run their PP), but I'll be damned if it didn't seem like his notoriously quick release wasn't slowing down as well as last season progressed. Like most of you all, if Shanny is the Devils marquee signing this off-season, I will be a content Ranger fan.

Yeah, it's completely beyond the realm of possibility that someone might travel to see their favorite team in the playoffs. It was a reasonable, semi-tongue in cheek question, and as my school's 1992 5th grade Geography Bee champion, I resent your dig at my geography comprehension skills.

I have no idea whether he has decided anything or not only that they talked about it a few weeks ago and Shanny had said he wasn't going to rule out a return with the Devils. Doesn't mean he was chomping at the bit to talk to Lou, just that he would be open to it.

I'd love to see him in NJ. He was injured last year and had talked about how much he learned about letting himself heal.
I think he can still be an asset in a lesser, but still prominent role. One of the most respected players in the game is never a bad thing to have in your locker room.
I think he's a guy you look down the line and see then get out there and bust your ass because you don't want to let him down.

They are friends. Shanahan knew Avery from Detroit so they hung out when Avery first got here. They are not Mess and Gretzky however like some people would lead you to believe.
Shanahan was the guy who sat Sean down and said, look you can play well and you aggravate better than anybody else. Just stay within the lines. His "screen" in the playoffs might not have sat well with Shanahan, but #14 likes winning so....
Shanahan spends most of his time with his family or with friends through his family from what I understand.

devs4L 07-01-2008, 11:31 AM Wouldn't mind Shanahan at all. You can't under-value the kind of leadership and pressence he has both on the ice and in the locker-room. Youth, youth, youth will only get you so far. Some of the best devils teams, cup winning teams, had players that were 37+.
Shanhan's 23 goals last year would have been good for second on the devils only behind Parise. His ability on the power-play would be much needed as well. Also, that grit and sandpaper he brings to the game is always a good addition to any team, and I think especially the devils right now.
Jonathan. 07-01-2008, 11:31 AM Someone mentioned 1.5M is what they'd offer him at their highest. I think that if that's what it took, Shanahan would likely be a Ranger still. I have to assume he's looking for 3M or so.

Speaking of Shanahan, he told me a little while ago that he was mystified by reports that he was going to sign with the Devils. And even after Lou Lamoriello began to get the old band back together again by signing Brian Rolston and Bobby Holik today, Shanahan said: “The Devils weren’t one of the teams that contacted my agent today. I guess people just figured that I’d want to go there because I wouldn’t want to move my family. But I want to play for the Rangers.”
