Whatever you think of the marriage, Igor Larionov and the Devils will be linked at the hip until the end of the season. Larionov told reporters yesterday he has a no-trade clause in his contract. The 43-year-old forward has not played in four of New Jersey's past five games, but he said he has no intention of waiving the no-trade clause even if it means a chance to return to Detroit. "No, that's enough," Larionov said after yesterday's practice at South Mountain Arena. "I'm done. I gave my word to Lou." Asked if he thought the team may be resting him for the playoffs, Larionov said, "I'm trying to believe. Hopefully it's going to happen like that." Brought in to spark New Jersey's power play, Larionov has not scored a goal since signing with the Devils.
Not good news.

The guy is going to retire after this season. Did you think he could be used as trade bait? The only value he would have would be if he was playing really well, and he is not. If was playing well, he wouldn't be traded.
At the beginning of the season, Larionov did help the power play. He had 5 assists (4 on the PP) in his first 8 games with New Jersey. But he has struggled since then, in part due to age and injuries.
The Devils power play is not the problem, though. I'm not saying that it is good, but the problem is scoring even-strength goals. The Devils can not get the puck into the net, partially because of lack of production, partially lack of talent and partially because of the lack of luck.
To make matters far worse, the PK has been bad lately.

To make matters far worse, the PK has been bad lately. I knew his trade value was close to nothing, but still had some small hope the Red Wings would take him back for one final playoff run and he'd warmly embrace this move. If the Wings do bring in Robert Lang and they get Hatcher back up to speed along with Cujo knowing he's no longer the odd man out (like he was earlier in the year when he was demoted twice to the minor leagues Arturs Irbe style amidst Hasek's concerns of being in a situation fighting both Legace and Curtis Joseph for being the top dog), Detroit should be a pretty worthy playoff contender this season. I totally agree with you on the PK and PP as well as how effective Larionov was for the first few weeks in October. He played a big part in getting players like Elias and Gomez to slow down their game a bit realizing what players often comment on when they view the game in street clothes from high above the rink which is you have more time then you generally realize when you are talking about developing a play in the offensive zone.
David Puddy 02-16-2004, 01:31 PM From Rich Chere's column today in the Star-Ledger:
Although he has
maintained he would not waive his no-trade clause, it is likely center Igor Larionov would be willing to go to a team of his choice if the Devils made a deal. Larionov has been a healthy scratch in four straight games and six of the past seven.

I honestly don't know what trade value he would have. It wouldn't be saving much salary this late in the season. The Devils can't send him to a team that will not make the playoffs
The only thing the Devils could get is a veteran defenseman from a team going to the playoffs with an extra defenseman. It would have to be a Western Conference team because an Eastern team wouldn't want to help strengthen the Devils.
Larionov may also have value in New Jersey with his presence around other teammates. Putting aside his boredom in practice last month, Larionov is a smart man, and a student of hockey. I think he may be having a positive influence on Sergei Brylin, who is having a great season.

Exactly. I miss Larionov with the Wings helping empart all his knowledge to players like Datsyuk and Zetterberg. He's a brilliant man and whater team he plays for the younger players should soak up information from him like a sponge.
