Roughly nine months ago I was watching a juniorA(U20) training match in my hometown of Oulu in northern Finland and I quickly noticed a strange player on the ice. He was a good skater and he had lots of skill, I assumed that he was juniorB(U18) aged because he was still wearing a face cage. He was among the best players on the ice despite being among the youngest players in that game, but was unfortunate to get any points. Luckily for me he received a penalty and I was able to hear his name. Announcer said a foreign name and it was something like Alexander Kerch. After the game I went home and searched the internet for similar names and only came up with this: http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=1322 -> obviously the player was too old to be him. I never saw that player again and soon after forgot the whole thing...

...Well today this popped into my mind for some reason and I tried to find that player again. I believe that this time I found a player profile that suits the player that i saw: http://www.samsungliga.lv/lv/players/1717/.

Can anyone confirm that this player was in Finland in last August? The player that I saw was fairly tall and shoots from right side.

Assuming that he was the player that I saw,
- do you think that he could be a future pro?
- will he stay in Latvia for the forthcoming season?
- how would you rate him among other young Latvian forwards?

Yeah, he is the son of Alex Kerchs the Senior. In fact the both played in Samsungliga last year. The senior was a pretty good player forthe Latvian national team. I haven't seen much his kid, but note that he didn't make the U18 team which he should have as he was eligible.

90- and 91-born Latvian forwards in Samsung premjerliga:
F Kerčs jr. Aleksandrs 24.12.1990 39gp 3g+8a=11p
F Uļeščenko Edgars 10.03.1990 33gp 4g+6a=10p
F Dobrenkijs Vladislavs 08.08.1991 11gp 1g+3a=4p
F Jass Koba 01.05.1990 24gp 1g+2a=3p
F Borovkovs Vladimirs 28.11.1990 26gp 1g+0a=1p
F Skvorcovs Gunārs 13.01.1990 24gp 1g+0a=1p
F Dobrovoļskis Aleksandrs 06.03.1990 2gp 1g+0a=1p

Seems that Kerčs still played fairly well compared to other forwards of same age in Samsung premjerliga?
Apparently three or four of these players were in the U18 team?

I remember there being some discussion on why the coaching team left Kerčs Jr off the U18 team. As far as I recall, no reasonable explanations were given. Still, I think the primary reason why Kerčs Jr played in Samsungliga and not the junior league where most of his peers play was he played on the same team as his dad Kerčs Senior who at the age of 41 is still arguably the best forward in Samsungliga (he was the leading scorer last year and i think second this year) and a proven veteran. Anyways, I am not in a position to compare Kerčs Jr skillset and potential to his peers as seldom watch Samsungliga games and he didn't play on U18 team.

As regards the above noted 90 and 91 players, yeah, most of them played on the U18 team:
F Uļeščenko Edgars 10.03.1990 - was supposed to be one of the leaders but he broke his leg right before the start of the U18 D1 championship in April.
F Dobrenkijs Vladislavs 08.08.1991 11gp 1g+3a=4p - tiny player (5'7?) but really stood out during the U18 champtionship. Fast and technical.
F Borovkovs Vladimirs 28.11.1990 26gp 1g+0a=1p - didn't really notice him much.
F Skvorcovs Gunārs 13.01.1990 24gp 1g+0a=1p - a fairly talented player.
