New "Cold War" in hockey?

Have to say that canadians and russiands have super-high potential in hockey at the moment. It something like 60`s-80`s.

Difference is that now other teams have better rosters.

Maybe we're getting ahead of ourselves. A Russia-Canada rivalry is great for hockey but Russia still hasn't won enough at the senior level over the last 15 years. And like you said there's alot more parity nowadays, not like before when it was USSR/Canada then everyone else.

Even now Finland has opportunity. 80`s Finland was total loser in this scene.

But, really if you want to call it the "new" cold war in hockey ATLEAST the canada-russia match ups always live up to the hype and are very entertaining to watch, i find the junior levels of Canada-Russia games the best to see, only because for whatever reason Russia's hyped up to be a powerhouse but end up having a good game with Canada (no offence russia but in recent WJC and Super Series events Russia did have the better team player-player) however, the outcome was not what we expected especially with Canada winning.

While no hockey is more exciting than a star-studded Canada-Russia game, there is no "cold war". At the junior level, there are stark differences. At the senior level, Sweden, Finland, and Czechs are all capable of having a streak of winning top-flight tournaments. Russia and Canada play more similar styles to each other than in the '70s-'80s. If Russia will now go on to win most of the next few WC's and the 2010 Olympics... then the rivalry will heat up further with Canada screaming for revenge. But chances are that SWE, FIN, or CZE will disrupt the balance.

I understand that this might feel more intense for Canadian fans after the end of the Cold War and with the long Russian absence from the absolute international top. And with the USA not always being such a great favourite in Canada.... But I have to confess that the strongly different playing styles and hockey cultures add interest for an outsider for Can-Rus rivalry. It was so great to see the final and the great contrast between the teams. At times that was awesome hockey from both teams.

Canada-USA rivalry has no tradition. Russia-Canada has more tradition than any rivalry in any interntanial sport.

USA-Canada brings nothing to the table. Russia-Canada has a sharp contrast in styles, controversial moments, and a huge amount of mystique. USA-Canada aint squat.

We have a bigger rivalry with Russia (Summit Series) than the US. and we like to have a good rivalry going with everyone

the media likes to pretend like there's some huge canada/us rivalry but really it's not there. As a Canadian hockey fan I consider Russia Canada's top rival in hockey because there's a history there. I guess there's a rivalry in the sense that the americans spoiled the party at the 96 world cup but other than that there's not a lot.

Sweden will be a powerhouse come 2014. Finland sure can jump too. The USA, Canada and Russia are all givens too. Talent is being set at a new bar for the NHL. Alot of top-end talent coming through lately. Almost scary.

It'll be great for hockey from a marketing standpoint though. Every team could have their superstar.

And of course, we will have the top-3 roster for the OG no matter if NHL lets its players come. The creation of the KHL makes our roster better and better. Let´s say Red Wings will have a bad year... then Russia and all other countries will have problem with Sweden. Red Wings with many dominate Swedes won the Cup. First of all Sweden and Russia are both top nations in icehockey. All teams will have big disspointments in the major tournaments. Look at Canada in OG 2006 and Russia in WC 2007. Russia with Ovechkin & CO took bronze in Russia. Let me guess, this wasn´t what they wanted. Russia with their GRRRRREAT team couldn´t even win WC home. Why? Yes, FIN, Swe and Cze are good and they will stop any dominance from Russia and Canada. That´s the point!

When Russia plays at full speed with 100% effort it's almost impossible for a team to skate with us. Seriously, watching the world championships, it was like night and day. Russia was a Ferrari and the rest of the teams were like Volvos. The level of speed that we play at is incredible, all the other teams looked like they were walking when playing Russia.

Sweden´s hockey culture is that our talants "grown up" slowly. For example Zäta made his first international succeed when his was 22 years old. That´s why Sweden earlier hasn´t many medals in WJC. But now it will be another thing about this because Sweden has a lot of great talants the coming years!

No I don´t want to see a only skilled Russian team. I want some HITTING too. And no Russia isn´t more skilled than other teams. Only Russians think that. No matter how beautiful a team plays, the important thing is to score GOALS and WIN! Russia has been very unsuccessful in 1990 and 2000 about that. If Russia is so skilled and pure excitment then why the lose 0-4 to Finland at OG 2006? They couldn´t even beat Finland in their home tournament at WC 2007.

i dont like what russia is doing with the KHL i think they want to kill off the SM Liiga and take the best few Finnish teams to the KHL which would be fatal for Finnish hockey and bad for the sport in general, i think it should be 1 leauge per nation, as for the russian international scene.... they just won't be as consistently good as Canada, i think they are on a Par with Finland and Sweden.

The SEL coaches stop their best players from playing in the National team! So woooooooow Russia won against a Sweden without of many of their best players with one goal.
