malkins 05-20-2008, 03:01 AM Here is the article (http://en.rian.ru/sports/20080519/107753003.html)
Even though, I am a Team Russia fan, it still sounds weird. Why would they ever dot that for?
Any comments?
VladNYC 05-20-2008, 04:30 AM What POS move to get an unfair advantage. I am sure hockey Canada had nothing to do with this, but those cops are ****ing *******s. Way to show faith in your team you ****ing ****** bags.

ok since you were THERE tell us what the problem was :)
**** off...and you're going to tell me it's better in Russia...hypocrite.
haha the tide has turned...*cough it was only the WC cough*
Most cops are ******* no matter what country they're in. However, given the high international profile of the WC, you'd think the city of Quebec or Canadian government or whoever could ensure that a guest team isn't forced off their bus and made to walk more than a 1/2 a mile just to get to the championship game.
Even the Canadians were never hosed that bad while in Moscow for the summit series.
VPD would've beaten them and then let them drive off and then would suspend their cops with pay and say they are having an "internal investigation" and 2 months later they'd hope no one remembered and the cops would be back at work.
Vancouver is unique like that. 2010 will be interesting, lol.
Breakaway23* 05-20-2008, 06:26 AM In Canuckistani Canada, Police make sure who you are.

FinnIafrate 05-20-2008, 07:04 AM I guess this is a canadian tradition? Before the world cup final there was a false fire alarm (in the middle of the night) in the hotel the finnish players were staying at.
It does show that the canadians are willing to do ANYTHING to get an edge? :sarcasm:

Do not get drifted away guys.
I am swiss and my wife is russian. i was in favour of Russia. i was in Canada and in Russia, i know both countries.
You can safety exclude the conspiracy theory as a source for this problem in Canada. 100%.
Some moronic attitude at an individual level could stil be the case but 98% of Canadians would not do that. TRUST ME.
Who cares at the end. Russia won and Canada played well. Hockey won !!!
weetabix 05-20-2008, 08:00 AM Yeah, I remember that fire-alarm too.
Some stopping of the bus is not so bad, since they were not sleeping at that time.
Krm500 05-20-2008, 08:46 AM Yea, there were like 30 motorcycle police who stopped the Russian buss at one of the gates. When the buss circled around to the other side of the arena the police just followed them and stopped them there too.... The entire russian team had to walk from the gate to the arena. Really not that far, maybe 150-300 meters depending on which gate the walked from, but still.
Funny thing was we arrived at the same time in a regular cab but that was no problem, just dropped us off at the players entrance while the russians had to walk there from the gate.

Well, it was reported by Latvian television during the game as well. And since most Latvians aren't really fans of Russian national team, I'd presume it actually happened. I don't think it's too big of a deal anyways, not like it affected anything related to the game.
On a sort of related note, at the world U18 Championships ( B Pool) in Riga few months ago the coach of the Japanese national team made his players walk from their hotel to the arena as a reaction to them losing their first three games. (the distance is about 7km, not sure whats that in miles). Needless to say, it didn't help the team one bit :D
therealdeal 05-20-2008, 11:38 AM Yeah, I'm saying it right now, that is not true at all. This would have been major news in Canada, and there would have been a lot of unhappy people. Are there any other sites reporting this news? Somehow I doubt they made the Russians walk a KM to the rink.

Agreed.
Anything about hockey is news in Canada, this would have been reported heavily.

The Viking Fury 05-20-2008, 12:10 PM what happened in Moscow?

There is an article in Sport-Express by Slava Malamud, who is IMHO probably the best hockey reporter that works for russian media. He's saying that street was blocked because the Canadian prime minester's cortege was driving by at the exact same time. Apparently, one of the bikers hit the bus and fell :)
RusskiyHockey 05-20-2008, 12:51 PM Some Russian article also mentioned a verbal confrontation between the team and the police, saying that had the police understood Russian, assistant coach Zakharkin would be nowhere near the Colisee! This incident just added fuel to Russia's fire, and rightfully so.

They didn't walk 1km, maybe 150 meters and absolutely not more then 200 meters. From the surrounding gates of the arena to the players entrance, that's it. And it happen, I saw it, and I also know the bs(*) reason why they had to do it.
Edit: * Prime minister coming to the game, they had bomb dogs and everything in and around the arena 2 hours before the game. We arrived at the same time as the Russians in a regular cab and the police sure as hell didn't hassle with us.

my 2 cents: Canadian police, like all police can be dickheads but there's simply no way they'd do something like harass a team bus in public. The officers would be fired, there would be an inquiry, there's no way Canadians would let that stay quiet.
I wasn't there, but my guess is a cultural difference is the main source of issue. Security levels in North America are incredibly high, especially with idiot dignitaries at the event. I would also imagine that the recent "riots" in montreal would have had everyone on edge.
Keep in mind, that when the Chilean U-20 actually got in a fight with the police in Toronto, there was a massive outcry and even though a couple cops got hit I don't believe there was anything in the way of repercussions for them.
The Canadian police simply aren't powerful enough to intimidate anyone. If the team was actually intimidated or anything along those lines, the government would have issued a formal apology by now. The Russian government would have sent an envoy to the PM demanding an apology and it would have rightfully come quickly.
My guess as to why this would be a problem is that the police at these events are generally "over dressed" in riot gear, bullet proof vests, the dogs out etc etc. That can be intimidating merely by presence, and I'm guessing that a police officer walked onto the bus to look around (and probably just see the hockey team.) If you are form a different country, dealing with foreign police is not a pleasant experience by any stretch of the imagination no matter what the details/circumstances are. You couple that with being tense/pumped up for the game and you would be pretty "excited" over the entire thing.
Krm500 05-20-2008, 02:45 PM Sorry but no, from what I understand the motorcycle police refused their buss entry to the area. The Russians decided that they would take the buss to the other side of the arena and use that gate instead. When they got there, the same group of motorcycle police were waiting for them and did not allow the buss access to the area. Word exchange and the russians ended up going the 150 or so meters to the players entrance.

....Keep in mind - majority of those players live and work in North America - therefore they are aware of any cultural differences. :sarcasm:
Forget Russia Canada. "Trying to get an "edge" like that is an old hockey tradition in Canada - i.e. Finnish team. Another example is Toronto treatment of the Flyers the year of Kappanen and JR in the playoffs - crank calls in the middle of night to players rooms and so on. This year, Montreal's hotel where the Flyers team stayed was under strict instructions Not to let any phone call through after a certain time and prior to that time - a caller had to give his name - so the player that was being called could identify him and chose to either accept or reject the call.
As to the "who won the Cold War argument" - I didn't know Canada had an Army to begin with!:sarcasm:

Thats really disapointing to me that it happened. I expect a much higher standard than that, the Russians have every right to be upset.
OK, just stop this, it does not really matter

Sweet, I know it's been quite a bit since you could say that. Well done, one in a row. Enjoy it. It is well deserved.

Crabbypants 05-21-2008, 01:32 AM Probably gave them a nice lil warmup to freshen up the legs before the game; I also blame the loss on the policemen for inadvertently fueling Russia's fire. :sarcasm:
mike14 05-21-2008, 01:36 AM I'm struggling to come to terms with how this is a big idea. From what I've read this kind of thing happens all the time during soccer world cup qualifying events etc...
