Ohmygod  ! Where did Ovechkin think he was going... the cottage? He's known as a casual guy, but I bet he wouldn't dress like that for Putin, lol! Someone should've given some of the players a comb during the bus drive to the Kremlin!

Did Fedorov even go to Russia....I'm not sure, because some of the players stayed in the States to be with their families instead....I know Nabby stayed back, I'm not sure about Fedorov....

Man I love how big Hockey is in Russia, you win the gold, and go relax with the President.....

That's interesting, it's the complete opposite in N.A. Guess it makes sense though, N.A. kids grow up with aspirations playing in Game 7. And Euros and Russians grow up watching the olympics and the Worlds.

European nations have more national pride (longer history, ethnic groups, and are actual defined nations), whereas North America is comprised of immigrants (heck, look at the A-Rod example for baseball, wanting to play for Dominican vs. USA)

Also, winning the Cup for a Canadian is a HUGE symbol of national pride, same goes for an American playing for a US city (and though wearing the red-white and blue is a great feeling, its not like the American public cares ao too much)

That's my take on it, at least

I don't think this is about history or ethnic composition. It's just since the NHL is the best league, Canadians kids grow up being told that the SC is a supreme achievement. While in Europe, when kids grow up nobody really tells them about the SC that much, at the same time winning an international competition is and example and a measuring stick.

His pants could be leatherier, but kudos nonetheless.

I'll be honest though, high school gave me the impression that all Russian males are legally required to wear full adidas-style track suits at all times. Am I wrong in this assumption?

That would explain 15,000,000 (half the country) watching Canada at the Olympics in Salt Lake City. No national pride here. None at all:shakehead

I'm a huge Fedorov fan, but I think if you asked him to choose between a IIHF championship or the Stanley Cup as a highlight-- what would he say? The Russian Five taking Stanley to the Kremlin maybe holds some significance to those guys that a few fans are all too willing to dismiss.

I may be able to read Cyrillic, but that doesn't mean I understand Russian. ;)

I suppose I believe that going through the grind of a season with a group of guys, only to be followed by series that are much more grueling than facing one team for one game and amassing points that way signifies a greater achievement. You feel like you survived an entire season that way, reaching the top together.

A tournament can sometimes just be more about luck. You also don't get "all" the guys on any one country team that could be there if you wanted the best players. Sweden was missing half of its potential team, thanks to the Red Wings, who also borrowed Datsyuk from the Russians. ;)

I can't speak for the players but something that only takes a couple of weeks, give or take a few days, and has some of the best players absent just doesn't seem like it should compare. My two cents.

Canadians care about international hockey when the best are playing. The fact that nearly half the country tuned in to see the finals in Salt Lake City certainly vouches for that. In fact I'm sure many Canadians would say winning gold in 2002 is their favourite hockey memory and more important than any Stanley Cup win could ever be. However, we don't care for B tournaments like the World Championships (Yes, when some of the best players in the world are still playing in the SCF and in some cases simply choose not to come, you become classified as a B tournament). Just because the WCs aren't huge here doesn't mean Canada doesn't have as much national pride as European countries, or that we don't care about international competition. We just don't get too excited for a tournament that takes place every year at the most important time in the NHL season, basically always in Europe, without some of the best players in the world participating, and where you only get to play 3-4 games against competitive teams the entire tourney!

The SC means a lot to Fedorov because he did it with 4 other Russians. If it wasn't for the role of the Russian 5, the SC would be almost meaningless compared to international gold.

I will help you :)

- How do you like Moscow fans comparing to hockey-addict Detroit where you've brought the Stanley Cup?
Fedorov: In Moscow, you know, they meet much better than in Detroit. People are awfully happy with the gold medals. And personally my joy from the victory, which we've brought to the Motherland, is much more intense than from NHL's successes.
