Wings4Life 05-18-2008, 05:17 PM Fedorov has now participated in 3 World Championship events: 1989, 1990, and 2008...and he has 3 WC gold medals to show for it.
I think it is no coincidence that the Soviet/Russian team only won a single gold medal in the 17 years from 1991 to 2007 without Fedorov, and that the year he comes back, they go all the way and win against the favourite Canadian squad.
Fedorov finishes this tournament with the following stats:
9GP 5G 7A 12Pts +10
Only one point behind sniper Alexander Semin for the team Russia scoring lead, and with a great case for Team Russia MVP due to his excellent defensive play.
Let's all hope he comes back for one more season with the Caps, the Ovie-Feds-Semin line was arguably the tournament's best!
Edit: His +/- was +10 not +9
The biggest diff was Nabby by a long shot

That is debatable, though personally I would have no problem with Nabokov being voted as tournament MVP. Back-to-back shutouts against SWI/FIN was impressive.
Of the 4 goals today I could only fault him with one of them.
Wings4Life 05-18-2008, 05:29 PM Fedorov also showed what a gamebreaker he still is when he made the final play in overtime to set up Kovalchuk for the game winner.

While I don't think he was the sole reason, I agree that he was instrumental. I had this feeling building up from the day he was told to have joined the team. Simply a great player.
HalfOfFame* 05-18-2008, 05:53 PM amazing tournament, still difficult to understand that russians have won it. incredible goal scoring. canada is so tough team to beat i just cant see winning over canada by finnish team.
Montréal Russians 05-18-2008, 06:00 PM Fedorov:clap: class act
Paxton Fettel 05-18-2008, 06:07 PM as I said before, IMO Fedorov has probably been Russia's best player in this tournament. he had a key role in the final as well : did you see what a fantastic play he made on the 1st goal??? and the game-winning goal? this guy is still a fantastic hockey player at the age of 38, and I can't believe he is (or was?) considering a retirement!!!

I don't think he is or he was considering a retirement. At least I never heard/read about it.

if you go to Caps TV and get a look at some of his intervews since joining the Caps, he was asked a couple of times about retirement and he answered that he'd sit down in the summer and talk about it with his family. then at the end of the regular season he was asked if he could be playing his last career game, he tried avoiding answering that question but said NO.
Wings4Life 05-18-2008, 06:37 PM I don't think he is or he was considering a retirement. At least I never heard/read about it.
He was pretty much set on retiring after this season while he was in a rut with Columbus, if i recall.
He has changed his tune though towards the end of the season, he loves mentoring the younger Russians on the Capitals squad. They are lethal together on the PP.
KenAF 05-18-2008, 06:38 PM I don't think he is or he was considering a retirement. At least I never heard/read about it.Fedorov said he expected to retire after his season was up in Columbus, but was rejuvinated by the style of hockey played in Washington.
At the end of the season, Fedorov said he would like to play for a few more years, but doesn't know yet where it will be [NHL or RSL]. He would like to play in the NHL, but only if he is on a more offensive oriented team like the Caps. Has has no interest in playing for another team like Columbus where he did not enjoy the game at all. He was going to talk about his options with family and friends before deciding what to do.
I think it will probably come down to money and his options. If Fedorov gets what he considers to be a fair offer to play on an offensive-oriented, playoff-caliber NHL team, then I would expect him to sign for one or two years with a no-trade clause.

Wings4Life 05-18-2008, 09:25 PM Very nice pic. :handclap:
Watsatheo 05-18-2008, 10:14 PM He'll sign in Washington and not come to Montreal. We could use him.
Clumsyhab 05-18-2008, 10:42 PM I was hoping that he could sign with Montreal, but with the chemistry he has with Ovy and Semin, I think he'll resign in Washington. However, the Caps seem to be fully loaded at Centre: Backstrom, Nylander, Fedorov, Kozlov, Laich, Gordon and Steckel.
Cruiser008 05-18-2008, 10:46 PM Helluva tourney for Feds, both offensively and defensively. In fact this is the best he's played since leaving Detroit 5 years ago.
parabola 05-18-2008, 11:00 PM I'm still confused how Canada was the favourites. Russians had a far superior squad.
Especially with Russias #1 goalie and our.... #5?

I'd say they were both favourites, but Canada always has the greater choice in what star players to bring. Russia ended up superior, but on paper Canada looked like a slightly better team to me. On offense, Getzlaf, Heatley, Nash, Staal, St. Louis, Spezza are all world class players who have won the Stanley Cup or key individual trophies. I wouldn't say the rest of their forwards are worse than the likes of Mozyakin, Gorovikov, Tereshchenko, Radulov, Sushinsky, etc. Then I think all of Russia's defensemen (except Andrei Markov) individually are not on the same level as most of Canada's d-men. Nabokov is a phenomenal goalie, and Ward has similar potential although he already won the Cup. Overall, Russia's roster contained about 13 non-NHLers, which I think affects my judgment over who looked better on paper. Talent-wise, more Canadian players could've made Team Russia than vice-versa.

Canada - 24 NHLers.
Russia - 10 NHLers.

Winning teams are built from the goalie out...
Canada was built from forwards. Cant win without superior goaltending.
FissionFire 05-19-2008, 12:33 AM I've been wanting Feds back in Detroit for a long time and really hope Holland goes out and makes it happen this offseason. It just wouldn't be right seeing him retire in another uniform.

Actually, you can win. And if you recall, the margin between gold and silver in this game was razor thin.
...
Anyway, I was super impressed with Fedorov in this tournament. I was very happy to see him help lead Russia to gold.
Panopticon 05-19-2008, 01:24 AM As a Fedorov fan, this spring has been really great for me. First he picked up his play in Washington, and now this...
I hope he either resigns in Washington, or comes back to Detroit. I would love to see him on either team.
Cortez_the_Killer 05-19-2008, 01:52 AM One word describes Fedorov.
Winner.
Cant wait to see him resign with the caps. hes not in it for the money.

1992: Olympic Gold in Albertville
1993: World Championship Gold in Germany
But I guess you're only talking about the World Championships...
But otherwise, the only one who participated in all these Gold squads you and I listed was.. Vyacheslav Bykov
LennyV 05-19-2008, 08:11 AM that image of Fedorov talking to Kovy just after Kovalchuk scored is just awesome. It really was a snapshot of how the younger players respect for him was the glue that held this team together. He was the connection between the great USSR legacy of the 80's (Bykov), the first russian nhl-superstars (himself), the promising russians av the late 90's (Morozov, Markov) and the new young superstars in the making (Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Radulov etc. He has played and learned/tought them all.
Does anyone know why Fedorov wore #29 instead of his usual #91 ?
Reds4Life 05-19-2008, 09:46 AM Does anyone know why Fedorov wore #29 instead of his usual #91 ?
29 was his original number he wore in the National team.
Nordic 05-19-2008, 10:17 AM On a couple of odd shifts, he looked like his mid 90:s self last night.
He had one shift where he owned everyone during the span of like 7-8 seconds, stickhandling past the whole Canadian team in the middle of the rink, almost standing still.
I wish Detroit would get him, so he can finish his career there.

I've heard that Detroit was insterested in getting Fedorov at the Trade Deadline, but Babcock apparantly did not want him Is there any truth to that?
Fryer 05-19-2008, 01:15 PM Besides obvious pride playing for his home country, I guess it was exceptionally sweet for Feds sticking it to Ken Hitchcock who sucked the pleasure of playing out of Feds' game in Columbus...

Actually it's Holland who was trying to get Feds, and the Blue Jackets wanted a little too much from the Wings. Babcock apparently had nothing to do with this.

When Franzen was healthy in the POs, he was a scoring machine, imagine having Fedorov on the same line with him......deadly!!!
29 was his original number he wore in the National team.
But he wore #91 at the Olympics in 2002 ...
