It's overtime heartbreak for Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship. Ilya Kovalchuk scored on a power play at 2:42 of the extra period to give Russia a 5-4 win in the gold-medal match at Quebec City.

Anyone up for uploading clips about Cherry's post-game comments on Youtube? I'm sure there are some classics in there.

I don't know why people are criticizing Kovy for crying. I think a lot of Russian fans and players were. I know i teared up and so did my American girl friend. This win means a lot to Russians and not just because we won the gold, but because with our Basketball, Soccer and now hockey wins this year, it shows that the tide of **** that swept Russia post the USSR is finally receding.

Actually almost everyone cries when they win a gold metal or a tournament in anything. They are just hating on Team Russia.

Oooh. I think he should have been on there over Green. I was very disappointed in St.Louis (looked invisible to me all tournament except vs. Germany), he looked like he didn't want to be there. Maybe he just felt obligated because it's in his homeland. Even Toews didn't look good.:(

Canada has to make sure they bring a more skilled/determined line-up next year. Too many 3rd-line type players (or at least it APPEARED that way).

I would also very impressed with how Canada played. It's a great team and they played beautiful hockey. After this tourney and especially after this game against Russia, no one can say Canada is a bunch of goons.

When the delaying of game penalty was first implemented what happened tonigh was the exact worst case scenrio the people who were against it talked about..overtime in a final game and the stupid rule decides the winner.

It's sad really. Such a stupid stupid rule.

I don't want to take anything away from the Russian's but it feels so wrong.

The curse of the host nation is strong and very real.

last thing i'll say is spezza really impressed me this tournament. it was tough seeing him on the bench after the game, has he lost in the gold medal game each time he's played for canada now? also that move from roy in the third period was just stunning. wish he wouldve scored there, for obvious reasons but also because highlight packages won't have time for great moves that didn't result in goals - it was that great a game

Wow what a game. One of the best I have ever seen for sure. If I knew that there is gonna be something like that, I would shell out a couple of grands for the trip to Quebec for sure!
It feels so great to see Semin playing his best after all struggles this year. Fedorov is like a kid, so happy for him. And Kovalchuk.... disappointing tournament for him until he becomes a Hero for Team Russia. Anybody agree with me?

Russia was awesome in the second half of the game. It's funny to say they had Canada right where they wanted them when they were losing 4-2, but they did. They took it to them from that point on.

Heatley Spezza should of been kept together,Sharp Toews,Getzlaf Kunitz, I don't know i would think chemistry would be better that way?

Because LeClaire stunk it up against the Swedes. Ward kept his team in the game. Without him, it wouldn't have gone to OT.

From a Canadian prospecitive, Canada quit skating after the 2nd period and let Russia back in the game.

Congrats to Russia on winning the World Championships, however not to take away from their victory it is a very cheesy call against Nash in OT, but hey let Russia win the gold in 08 and we will gold at the Olympics in 2010 when it really matters. :) You have to think that Andy Murray, Brent Sutter or Mike Babcock will Coach at the Olympics in 2010. I can't seeing Hitch coaching the team in 2010.

As an old cold war warrior i never cheered for russia before, but that time is over now (Thanks god) and to day i am glad to se russia win the cup. all the luck to you, new russian nation.
Next year, may the best team win, again, Sweden, Canada, russia or even better Finland.

Congrats Russia! :handclap: Long time coming and fully deserved! I had a feeling that this might be the year when I heard that Fedorov is joining the team with all that young talent on it and Bykov at the helm.

This was a true hockey classic, I'm so glad I taped the entire thing, including Finnish intermissions.

It was also pretty special to see Tretyak and Fetisov there celebrating with the team...a lot of dreams were fulfilled clearly.

This was a good thing for hockey, Russia is now back on the map.

Unforturnate way for Canada to lose on a hard luck penalty, but full value to the Russians, who played a terrific game and came through when they had to.

Canada had only one seriously capable team to compete with them here. That team beat them in the end.

Thats why I don't feel like this tournament was a success.

We weren't properly prepared to play Russia and this finals match up was something we should have been banking on and really ready for.

We weren't though.

Our defensive players weren't even a factor when we needed them to be.

As dominant as the BIG LINE was...they played too much over the course of the tourney.

We actually had to strecth them to the limit just to get the job done against Norway at one point!!!

Towards the end of the tournament (quarter finals against Norway) I couldn't get a positive buzz going for our team.

Just not a whole lot of convincing shifts from role players and tactically we were just terrible at times.

It seems like a harsh take on a Silver Medal team...but thats how it goes here in the HOCKEY MECCA.

Oooh. I think he should have been on there over Green. I was very disappointed in St.Louis (looked invisible to me all tournament except vs. Germany), he looked like he didn't want to be there. Maybe he just felt obligated because it's in his homeland. Even Toews didn't look good.:(

I have never before seen Russia's senior team win gold, and this is truly important for Russia. I can't express my pride in our guys! It will be a grandiose presidential reception in a few days for the team. This victory should finally bury the opinion of some Russians that the Russian NHLers only care about the American money and will always resort to individual play when it matters most to be a team. This was one hell-of-a-team! Hats off to every player and the coaching staff. And to Canada's team as well. Only they can bring out the best of Russian hockey.

I don't know why people are criticizing Kovy for crying. I think a lot of Russian fans and players were. I know i teared up and so did my American girl friend. This win means a lot to Russians and not just because we won the gold, but because with our Basketball, Soccer and now hockey wins this year, it shows that the tide of **** that swept Russia post the USSR is finally receding.

Congrats to Russia, you deserved to win this one. Canada has to be dissapointed to lose this on home ice. Our defence was a non factor in this tournament as we gave up way too many good chances. Thats the way things go sometimes...overall this year and the last few years have been very solid for Canadian hockey. There are a lot of good teams in the world who are capable of winning tournaments.

Anyways, there are some sore winners on the Russian side and some sore losers on the Canadian side....what else is new.

I don't know why some Canadians are saying the last penalty was stupid, or the rule is stupid. Even without the new rule, Nash still should've been called for delay of game. He was dog tired and intentionally shot the puck out so he could get off the ice. I think he was aiming for the bench - where it wouldn't have been a penalty - but got it way too high. That was a textbook delay of game call.

What burns me is that Nash was right by the Canadian bench just seconds earlier with the puck just inside the Russian zone, but instead of going off, he turned back toward the Canadian zone. He was dogging it and his team paid the ultimate price in the end.

I'm actually the happiest for Ovechkin, as he had some tough years in the WJHC for team Russia lossing two Gold medal games in a row against Canada. Kovalchuk on the other hand seems to always beat us..

Not surprised to have an Edmonton fan insert that name..lol..but seriously as a Habs fan, I was very impressed watching Korneev. He's been one of our darkhorse prospects for a while and we had not heard much of him for a while. He seems to have taken it up a notch this year. I would love to have Korneev and Emelin come over in the next couple of years..

Russia had lots of RSL players out there, just shows that Russia's depth is underrated.

Imagine how this tournament would have been different if Washington had advanced to the second round of the playoffs. Or Ottawa. Or a whole bunch of other teams.

Yeah, and I think the line with Morozov, Zinoviev & Saripov, that played together most of the tournament were Russias best line, overall for the whole tournament.

Vladimir Tretiak totally ran over(by accident) a swedish commentator (on air) the second after Russias 5-4 goal :D Later, during the national anthem, it looked Tretiak & Ovechkin were dancing or something. Tretiak was also interviewed in swedish television, I've never seen a man so happy, almost unable to speak, maybe he had to cool his nerves during the game with a glass of Smirnoff (or two) :D

Canada couldnt compete in goal with Nabokov (though I really wished....even before the game....that Leclaire was in).

Was a great game to watch though. Talk about drama. Congrats to Russia.

For me as an Ottawa fan I really enjoyed this tourney, as Heatley was dominant and Spezza really added a new element to his game.

Not to mention Moscow being a city that never sleeps, groups of drunken fans assembled and disturbed the proverbial peace & quiet in cities across Russia. Hell, even Putin + Medvedev bothered staying up to watch the game and congratulate the team thereafter. The occasion certainly didn't go unmarked on a wide scale, especially considering that many have been waiting 15 years for this very night!

On the whole I agree; its football, a huge gap, hockey, and then everything else. But stick tennis, futsal, Formula 1, and boxing somewhere in your chart maintaining the approximate outlined order. And wrestling is also worthy of note as it's the dominant and practically unchallenged number one sport almost anywhere in the North Caucasus.

A team meeting with the President is already arranged. I don't know about an official public celebration, but I would assume that something along those lines should already be in the works.

Bashkorostan, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Kemerovo Oblast, Khabarovsk Krai, Omsk Oblast, Tatarstan, and Vologda Oblast are probably the most obvious examples.

I don't know if you noticed this too, but Ovechkin was unusually .. mature during his earlier interviews. I dind't see ANY of the clowning that he had during the nhl season (of course today was undertandeable the kid was excited)... can we say maturity? hmmm...

Its funny that some use ovy's personality as one of their excuses to slam his rivals when their short memories forget that kovalchuk was very much the same way.. he was a joker in interviews with heatley and seemed to only care about getting his goals and as he matured so did his behavior...

kinda cool to see.. good thing for ilya (scoring) too by the way, he would've had a tough time if russia hadn't won that's for sure

How can anyone say that hockey's "not too big" in Russia? If anyone reads the Russian media on a daily basis they'll tell you that hockey gets almost as much coverage as soccer and expectations for our NT are always huge. Hockey's the clear #2 in Russia and is a great source of pride in Russia.

By far the best hockey game I've watched live! I'm a bit of a russophile, so I didn't quite know who to cheer for at first, but now I must say this russian team won me over. Kovalchuk and Ovechkin (who really is some kind of superhuman tank, incredible!) are so much more impressive to watch live than on tv, which says a lot.

It's a shame there's no meaningful international tournament other than the olympics. Something that's a best on best but not single elimination, perhaps a little longer in length as well. I know it's totally unrealistic, but I would love to see a sort of Stanley cup style tournament between the top 7 nations plus one more qualifier. Not every year, but maybe every four years, alternating with the Olympics kind of like how the world cup and euro do.

It was a great game and Russia deserved to win. Canada played great as well.

I'm Canadian and I have to admit I was cheering for the Russians. It's nice to see another country to do well, plus this adds some fuel to the fire for 2010.

Yeah...I might have mentioned it earlier, but the 5on 3 on which Canada scored in the first was due to the same penalty being called. Now, if Russia had cleared the puck over the glass and not been penalized earlier, then you'd have cause for complaint.

You're right on with that one. Fedorov got the same penalty in the first and 1 minute later the Russians took that 4 minute high stick penalty and Burns scored on the 5 on 3 to get Canada up 3-1. So, the call in OT was the same.

It was an amazing game. Full credits to the Russians. What is impressive to me is how physical the Russians played, especially Ovechkin. We don't get to see much of Ovy in the west coast, only get the Pens games on TSN, but man, Ovy is so physical and skilled, it's borderline scary what he can do.

What this game did was show everyone in Canada that even though the 2010 games will be on NHL sized ice, instead of international sized ice, the Russian team is perfectly capable of matching up to Canada physically and using their skill to break down Canada's defense.

Team chemistry might be a big thing in 2010. Most of the European born players play at the Worlds after their NHL season is over, so they are able to build some chemistry with other players on a yearly basis. Most of the best Canadian players don't attend the Worlds.

Next year's worlds will be interesting in terms of how Canada will try to build some chemistry with their forward lines, depending on who is available for the tournament of course.

Ward is probably top 10 if that.

This was the first Russian interview that I have ever heard. You should hear some of his English interviews. They're hella funny. Especially the ones from Shark Byte.

Something that I was wondering about today - there was no doubt the Russians and Canadians were the top-2 teams coming into the tournament. So, knowing the single most important thing to do is shut down Kovy, Ovechkin, and Semin, we pick 5 of our 7 defencemen from the western conference?
I mean, JBo was a great choice because he plays all of the above 8 times a year. But Burns, Staios, etc. play them less than once a year.
