Meh. I don't know. Not many super-great d-men that shone in IIHF events.

And those swedes are less likely to start a riot if the team is swede-free.

I don't know.

Amen

Please name three defensemen that should have been there instead of Salming based on their IIHF tournament performance :)

Yeah. He was only the top scorer in every international tournament he played, except Nagano. Not deserving at all.

He played in so few IIHF tournaments. Only olympics. I am sure there'd be better choices.

Here is Gretzky's citation from the IIHF site. The voters obviously had enough sense to include all his international play, not just those sanctioned by the IIHF:

"Gretzky is widely regarded as the greatest player ever to play the game. In his international debut at the 1978 World Juniors, despite being the youngest player, the ultra-intelligent centre won the scoring title, recording 17 points in just six games. Three years later he played in his first major international event, the 1981 Canada Cup. He won the scoring crown again. The next year he debuted on European ice, taking part in his first and only IIHF World Championship, and led the tournament in scoring again. Gretzky went on to lead Canada to wins in the 1984 and 1987 Canada Cups, winning the scoring crown in both events. In Rendez-Vous ’87 versus the Soviets in Quebec City, he was named MVP, and also led this event in scoring. Four years later, in 1991, he led his country to a third consecutive Canada Cup victory. Once again he led the tournament in scoring. And of course, to go with his amazing international resume, he also owns 61 NHL records, 31 individual NHL trophies, and four Stanley Cup rings."

Feck. I didn't think of juniors >_< very stupid of me.

He belongs, no doubt. Weird that they bring up Canada cups.

Gretzky played in the 1982 World Championship for sure. I doubt that he was a top scorer of that tournament.

Now that you've come to your senses, you may now have salming as well - no charge.

As a finn I have no interest in having Börje Salming there. Unless he is the best choice, as it seems.

That was his lone worlds and, yup, he did lead it with 14 points.

The swede flag?

Pretty arrogant of you to think that everyone else follows your posting history. You fly a swede flag? You're a swede - until you speak up.

I reside in sweden, the flag is about location ^^

You don't have to really follow my posting history to have seen me around here :)

I remember (more or less) that worlds. There were two amazing games between Canada and Russia. Was LaFleur in Team Canada as well?

Other then the fact he was the worlds best player.

...and Canada cups/World cup are very relevant on this side of the pond so it's not too strange to see why he was mentioned.

I think Sundin should have been chosen over Gretzky. He has showed up for so many tournaments and very rarely plays bad. plus he's got like 3 wc-golds and 1 og-gold.

I think this all-star team is an excellent selection. It was elected by all experts who followed the worlds for a long time.
I thought before they released it that Fetisov, Makarov and Gretzky have to be a lock and I am glad to see them on there.
well deserved.

if Salming is not the 2nd defender I would wonder who it would be.

I would love to know which players came short to being elected but didnt make it.

I also remember an all-star team being elected of the century, back i the 90ties by a hockey magazine and it was.

Tretjak, Fetisov, Bobby Orr
Kharlamov, Gretzky, Howe

but I think that was an all time all world all start team, that included NHL playing etc.

The flag is better served for your nationality IMO. Your location is Fallun. If someone really wants to know where it is they can look it up. I always found it strange that your always talking about being Finnish, but proudly flying the Swede flag... It's good that you respect where you live, but man it's a hockey forum and your flying your enemies flag...:(

If someone picks an All-Star Team and team does not include Mario Lemieux, the team is not an All-Star Team. It's as simple as that.

He participated in 1 IIHF tourney, collected 6 points, what's there to include?
