The song you are thinking of is Barrett's Privateers by Stan Rogers.

Or it could be most Great Big Sea songs...

God damn them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold,
we'd fire no guns, shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
the last of Barrett's Privateers.

Good chance it's that one.

Same thing happened to me at the World Juniors in the Czech Republic. Eventually I figured out which Czech band I'd been listening to.

Barrett's Privateers. They played it before the drop of the puck.

"I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's Privateers..."

They also played The Hockey Song by Stompin' Tom Connors.

They played Barrett's Privateers by Stan Rogers, but on TV it sounded like they were playing a cover version ,too bad.

Thanks for posting Stan singing it as it should be sung.
