Very tough game to call. I know Canada is on home ice but Russia is just too good on paper. Yes, I know games aren't won on paper but Russia has displayed its offensive talent already. Ovechkin is damn scary. What tips the scales for me is that they have Nabokov in goal. So I am giving a very very slight edge to Russia heading into this game.

Hoping I am proven wrong of course.

Apparently this is the first time since 1959 where Canada and Russia have met for the Gold at an elite adult Hockey Championships.

That's TSN talking.

It's wrong though.

Canada met the Soviets for the World Championship of Hockey Gold in 1989, and also in 1992 at the Olympics against the CIS.

In the Canada Cup the Soviets and Canucks met up twice, in 87 and 81.

I pick Russia 5-4 in OT :)

Good luck with that.

Fully agreed.

Just because you like one player or that player plays for your NHL team is just a lame excuse to cheer against your nation and you are a disgrace!!!

Anywayz, 5-2 for Russia, I'm predicting as their offense looks scary and so does their D from what I saw.

From the start, I said Russia has a very good chance of winning gold this year.

I have a bad feeling Russia wins, and again, I don't trust Cam Ward in net, but GO TEAM CANADA! As long as no team gets steamrolled, I'll be happy.

Winning on home ice is hard, although...the Canadian juniors have done it so who knows.:sarcasm:

umm Russia's deeper? that's a joke right?

Canada has a more balanced lineup and better D. maybe a slight edge to nabby in nets.

russia has the game breakers in kovy and ovechkin BUT they cannot roll out a group of power forwards like the nash line, staal, doan, etc...

Russia's D is not as good as Sweden's. This game will have goals and will come down to goal tending and special teams, but the bottom line for me is that Russia' D and forwards will not be able to contain Canada's fore check and size down low.

but it's one game and anything can happen

I'm going for Canada and I think Canada has a deeper team but I think Nabokov will steal this game.Plus the Ovechkin factor will probably come into play.

Glad to see such faith in Ward. :sarcasm:

Yeah, he's no Brodeur, and if it came down to a duel of the goaltenders, Nabby would definitely have the edge, but frankly, it shouldn't come down to that.

Assuming Canada plays smart defensively (IE: Not the game against Sweden), Ward shouldn't be a factor.

CanadianCommie
05-16-2008, 11:50 PM
Nabokov could really steal this, either way, it'll be close as hell.

Canada really just needs to play its style, and there's the home-ice advantage. Russia has an absolute fantastic offence, but Canada has a pretty damn good lineup too, so I think it'll come down to who just wants it more.

I'm pulling for Canada, but I think it'll be a 5-4 score with a late goal deciding it.

Its weird eh?

I don't know how I'm going to feel on Sunday. My duty as a Canadian is obvious...or is it?

The Russian Team seems so tight and inspired. Its hard to deny the way they are playing.

I think Ovechkin must be the new energy who is breathing positive air into their team.

They were all smiles today.

Not that Team Canada wasn't but...I'm going to say....

If it wasn't for 'THE BIG LINE' this team would not even be CLOSE to Gold Medal worthy.

Which I COULD be okay with...but...Its really frustrating to watch players who are supposed to be ROLE PLAYERS trying to SHOW OFF to the home crowd and by totally ignoring their DEFENSIVE JOBS so they can gamble for goals.

It very well could cost us tommorow. It probably SHOULD have cost us versus SWE but THE BIG LINE totally bailed us out.

To be sure....there isn't a worry in the world when you've got THE BIG LINE on your side.

BUT: I don't want to hear all the hoolpla/hype and bow-downing for the team this year...

This WHC has been all about THE BIG LINE putting on an amazing clinic from start to finish.

I've got plenty of pride in my country. I'm not cheering against Canada. If we win...I'll be happy.

I just look at our head coach and a few of our players and I don't see 'GOLD MEDAL WORTHINESS' top to bottom.

Rick Nash is BY FAR the best player in the tournament...followed by Heatley and Getzlaf...and there are NO Russians ahead of ANY of those 3 aforementioned HOCKEY MACHINES.

Still...I can't deny how RUSSIA is a site to behold. I've always loved Russian Hockey and I'd love to see them beat us tommorow.

I think it would add so much to the hockey universe and be a sweet reward for Ovechkin who has had ten times the year anyone in the tourney can come close to.

The BIG LINE has made fewls out of everyone. Its laffable.

It just goes to show how UN-BALANCED our team actually is.

Russia will fold against Canada. Anyone else and they'd win - no doubt.

But Canada is in Russia's head, so to speak, and they won't have their best game against us.

And as far as our defence goes? Fewest goals against in the tournament prior to yesterdays game. Russia allowed more to that point - so what's that say about Russian D? They are going to have their hands full tomorrow versus Heatley, Nash, and Getzlaf....

I hope Canada plays really physical on guys like Zaripov, Zeinoviev (sp?) and Morozov. I haven't watched them play a lot but I'm hoping they are scared of the physical play.

Canada needs to play physical and have good defensive coverage. Also, no fancy passes as Russians can easily take advantage of that......It sucks that I won't be able to watch the game though I'll catch the replay on TSN at 5 PM.

Winnig goal will be superior wristshot by Ovechkin. After that goal we will see maybe the most craziest goal celebration of all time. Ovechkin will jump and bounce all over rink for good 10 minutes.

The Capitals line did that with Fedorov having the flu and against arguably better opposition. Never the less, i think both lines are very good and to say that Canada's main line is better is probably not true. I guess we will find out Sunday. But I think Canada's first line matches up better against the Russian defense then the capital line against the Canadian defense. The real argument is if Canada's second line is better then ZZM.

Well, let's put it this way. Nabokov definitely trumps either of Canada's goalies. If Russia's defense plays well in front of him, admittedly a big "if," Nabby could be a huge factor in the end result. Personally, I'd be happy with a tonne of goals on both sides, as long as Russia gets one more.

Totally agree.

umm Russia's deeper? that's a joke right?

Canada has a more balanced lineup and better D. maybe a slight edge to nabby in nets.

russia has the game breakers in kovy and ovechkin BUT they cannot roll out a group of power forwards like the nash line, staal, doan, etc...

Russia's D is not as good as Sweden's. This game will have goals and will come down to goal tending and special teams, but the bottom line for me is that Russia' D and forwards will not be able to contain Canada's fore check and size down low.

but it's one game and anything can happen
Our D isn't convincing at all this year, it's in fact our weakest point. Every time we're in danger, our D panics and chaos arrives. I think that Russia does it this time, they look so much more focussed this time around.

You make it sounds as though we're so superior and Russia is the same caliber as Slovakia. Keep dreaming pal, you might have a sudden wake up.

I know exactly what I'm talking about. A citizen's duty is to be behind your country. It's a strong word for such a small event, but it's suited still IMO.

Oh and it's "you're", not "your".

Anyway, I won't add anything more about this matter because we're getting OT.

I guess I'll root for the great Russkies. Go Ivan, go Pavel, go Trotsky :yo: It would be great to see Canadians lose on their own ground. Most of all I'm hoping to witness a great final.

I imagine it would be - for some....

How about it, Russia? Did it suck to lose on home soil recently? I hope we don't have to find out.... :handclap:

I'm just thinkng 'down the road' here. A lot of people are handing 2010 roster spots to several players on this team and IMO THIS Canadian team hasn't played the kind of TEAM GAME we need to win Gold in Vancouver.

If we beat Russia today...great...but lets not be fooled into thinking this WHC was/is a high water mark for Canadian Hockey.

Truth be told...this is a ONE LINE TEAM.
