Saku and Teemu better bring it this game ^^
And I think they will. Without Lunkan in goal, Finland will really have to make alot of mistakes to lose.

After the semifinal Saku was quoted saying that perhaps there should be no bronze game at all. First time ever I've heard him say something like this. This may indicate motivation problems for team Finland in the bronze game...The sentiment is shared, I'm not sure whether I can get excited enough to watch it either.

weetabix

Hopefully Shedden rests Saku and Teemu and puts them only on powerplay. If you don't have desire, don't go to ice. I have to say, that they didn't have much desire on yesterdays game either, or then they were tired. Not very effective play by them.

Hopefully we play our other line-ups and give some playtime for the fourth line also (some 5on5 play and not only PK).

Let's beat Sweden!! :handclap:

I have to admit, that if it wasn't Sweden as opponent I might be tempted to skip game also. But usually when you can't win the whole thing, these games are better than the final. So let's hope for a good game (without referee interfearing the game flow) and may the best team win (that is Finland)!

Let the score be, 4-3 for Finland in OT.

This is the REAL gold medal game. :sarcasm:

Would be nice to see Vehanen get the nod as Backstrom looked awfully shaky in the semi-final. Vehanen was awesome in the exhibition game against Canada.

My prediction: Finland 5-4 over our beloved neighbours.

Finland vs. Sweden generally result in tense and exciting games, hopefully this won't be any different.

Of course it will be good.

It's Sweden Finland and it's the last game of the season.

It doesn't matter if they play over Mars bars, a beer or a bronze medal.

This is one of those games that no swedish or finnish hockey player want to lose, ever.

Ok.
Last game of the season for the vast majority of the players.

Swedish teams don't employ a high forecheck. That's why Luoma can get much more time with the puck.

Watching the game from IHWC
webfeed and couldn't help smiling
a little bit when the commentator
said:

"... we all know how the Finns like
to get an early lead and shut the
game down. They like to rely on
their defense to win the game for
them...".

Of course especially in a game against
SWE this sounds a bit funny, in light
of some unfortunate events in history.

Now, somebody poke me in the eye,

It`s a wierd thing that Shedden changed players in the lines which worked but did nothing to 1st line which wasnt working that well. First he refused to take OJ out of 1st line and then he didnt have guts to drop Peltonen. In 3rd and 4th lines he changed players all the time.

It looks like neither of the teams gives a shiet about the outcome of this one. Might be just be me, but bronze sucks.

Seriously it has nothing to do with sweden being down by two, but the fact that I think this whole tournament is loosing its value for every year that goes. The only thing that matters about this tournament is to win gold... in other sports.. its actually pretty nice to get bronze. Like Sweden did in football '94.

No one even cares about this game tonight in Sweden... only diehard hockeyfans. I talked to my friends who were going to skip it all of them. They would never skip a qualification-game for Euro Champs in football.

Seriously. But why is IIHF trying to kill off international hockey. That whole federation is a joke. This matter needs to be dealt with, because hockey is loosing in popularity due to this "joke-tournament".

Loosers tend downplay the value of the tournament, but when your playing for the gold opinions suddenly change.

And the reason why it's held every year is because the current sponsorship deals mandate it.

Weinhandl doesn't have much of a repertoaire. NHL defensemen would learn his tricks quite quickly over a 82-game season. He wouldn't be able to play a goalscorer role in the NHL at least. And he isn't all that well-rounded...

i think he rounded out his game, but you may be right about his goalscoring ability. but 15-35-50 would be possible numbers for him. at least a 3rd liner in the "new" NHL.

Well. Playing a specific goal scoring role on a line for a year should make for the opposite. If anything, he's kinda less interested in helping out defensively etc.

Guys who impressed me most this year were.

Mikko Koivu. I had high expectations, but wow. We're looking at a huge part of finnish hockey's future here. I thought he'd only be this good on big ice...

Antti Pihlström. I had so-so expectations. He was much better offensively, defensively, physically and attitudewise than one can dream for. Can be one of these guys who always steps up on the national team. Or an NHL star.

Anssi Salmela. Not a superstar by any means. But looked much more safe defensively than I thought. And the guts... Very nice.

Koistinen, Salmela and Niskala as a whole surprised me. I bet they weren't expecting to having to clear the stupid plays of defensemen who were more experienced from them and supposed to play as the stay-at-home guys.

enroth and larsson are on their way.

but the ordinary SEL goalie is pretty weak compared to other leagues.

I wouldn't count on Larsson to be a top-notch NHL goaltender. I can't really say what he's missing, apart from the lack of natural timing when going down on the butterfly. And the rebounds :O but he is still young... But I haven't seen a goalie with so odd timing while having so good reflexes succeed at a high level.

Enroth has the potential to be a much more complete goaltender IMO. His size might become a problem. But since Niittymäki can somewhat play the butterfly in the NHL, I might be wrong. He has better reflexes than any swedish goalie not named Lundqvist, but still it's his technique that he relies on. Which is a big strength. One of the few swedish goaltenders that I see that could actually actively choose to play the puck, which is a big strength in the NHL. Lundqvist is one of those smart ones who knows that it's not one of his strengths, and does it seldomly. Enroth could do it a bit more, at least against lesser opposition. Just as he doesn't get caught in Backlund-land and starts thinking that he's Norrena with the puck... While he is the typical swede.

The funniest thing about that is that in sweden most Niklases spell with just the k, while almost every finnish Nicklas spells with ck xD and here it is the other way around.

Completely late and oh so OT but I know of 7 finnish men named Niklas (Me being one of them, and we all spell it with one k and nothing else. I do in fact think that one "c" or one "k" is way more common in finland then both)

Now about the game, finally Bäckström showed up and the theam benefited on their chances. Excellent game! :handclap::handclap::handclap:

An efficient Finland is weird to see. Instead of the Finland that is shooting blanks ^^

It's always very tough watching FIN-SWE on TV. No matter which team scores, my heart misses couple of beats...

Losing to swedes seems like end of the world, but winning is oh so sweet.

Pihlström isn't bigger than 5'10? Wow. He looked at least 6'0-6'1 by the way he played.

I wouldn't count on Larsson to be a top-notch NHL goaltender. I can't really say what he's missing, apart from the lack of natural timing when going down on the butterfly. And the rebounds :O but he is still young... But I haven't seen a goalie with so odd timing while having so good reflexes succeed at a high level.

i think he has starter potential on the osgood level. very solid, but not top-notch. at least that's his upside. but i really like his develop the past season. a completely improved goalie after the season.
and while he may not become a star, he's an upgrade over liv for example.

While he is the typical swede.

enroth is indeed very complete. while size can be a problem, 5'11 is big enough to play the game.

i just think that enroth, larsson and markstrom sounds like a new generation of swedish goalies. a much improved one compared to the past. goaltending was always a problem IMO in sweden. no all-around guys. the new ones look at least promising.

Well O.Jokinen wasnt so convinced about the greatness of our browns medals.
So, what about the evening, can he get past lines to jet-set, or is he the jet-set?

True, also unheard of that Sweden shoots more shots on goal than Finland and can't score.

Imaging how it must feel for me. A finn in sweden. In elementary school it was the worst.

Finland wins - verbal and physical abuse

If he finds a hybrid style of play, sure. But being a starter who plays butterfly with that stature... Very hard.

Congrats to Finland who deserved to win! I felt sorry for u guys in Olympics 2006. This might not be revenge to the olympics, but at least its something.

As for Swedens tournament, i think they did very well with this lineup. At least 30 players turned down the national team (*** was that), but i dont like to just blame the players who didnt want to play... but the IIHF for hosting this "joke-tournament" every year.

Get rid of all these poor ************* and lets have a A-Champs again... and lets just play it every fourth year or something. Or at least every second year.
