Man, the pads are really small.

The blocker looks obnoxious, and the catcher looks pretty damn small (not that it needs to be as big as they are nowadays), but the leg pads dont look a hella lot different from what Marty wears (a couple inches thinner??).

That wont fly with the players, not a chance.

I almost can't believe this is authentic. I would have thought it a PS job and still will probably reserve much opinion until its confirmed in other press. In any case, I can't see the league doing anything close to this drastic.

I can't see the league allowing it either, but that would be a nice change.

Oh boy..Lundqvist, Luongo and Giguere etc are in big trouble if anything close to this becomes reality. :)

I don't think they'll make a change that drastic. This was probably done to test the extreme. That being said, I wouldn't have a problem at all if they made pads that small. I was watching a video of Tretiak the other day and his pads were about that size. It'll force goalies to show a little more athleticism instead of just dropping to their knees every time a shot comes their way, and it should add more excitement to the game overall.

Speaking of adding excitement to the game, let's get rid of the trapezoid please. Watching clips from the OHL playoffs and IIHF and seeing goalies come out and play the puck is so fun to watch.

Can you imagine the flopping and the crying? I mean these guys might actually develop some athletic ability if this comes to light.

Kids like Price and so on would suffer though, these guys grew up perfecting the butterfly.

Oh well.

Why is it?

Materials and modern technology can easily protect the human body better than it did before. Why do the exterior pads need to be the size of sofa cushions?

Surely not to have a competitive edge?

Good. We don't want sissy's in the NHL who have to hide behind their giant pads. A players success should depend on his athleticism, not his equipment.

Well said.

The players block shots with their half inch thick shin pads, torsos and bare arms. Why does a keeper need stupidly inflated equipment?

But with equipment the size shown here, Osgood might actually get hurt from a 2-hander to the chest pad! :sarcasm:

Haha with how puffy the pants and chest protector are compared to the size of the leg pads, glove, and blocker...that just looks ridiculous.

Where did you get this from? Is there an article about it somewhere?

Am I the only one that thought that was just a picture of Marty at first glance? I would be glad if the pads actually got down to that size, but I doubt it will happen. They need to at least get rid of leg pads that go up to the players waist. Anything that only exists to cover as much of the net as possible when the goalie drops into a butterfly needs to go.

Looks like any goalie pre-1990. Bring it on.

Blocker and glove can grow a little bit though. Chest pads and leg pad sizes these days are beyond a disgrace. It's funny too, watching classic series on NHL Network really puts it in perspective. With the advent of Kevlar and high-tech impact materials into sports, there should be no need for bulky increases in sizes.

The first thing I looked at was the leg pads, so I actually did think it was Marty for a second.

Look I'm a big advocate for reducing the pad size, but that is TOO small, IMO.

If they just got the minimum height maybe 2-3 inches and forced all goalies to have the flaps on top (if they have pads with them) tied to their legs I think it would be worlds better.

Making the glove slightly smaller is cool, but personally I've never had a problem with blockers so I think reducing that is stupid.

Also they need to make a Giguere rule about the chest/shoulder pads. Maybe the league could goto companies and have them put out pads with weight sizes in a way. Obviously that might be going out on a limb or asking too much, but a 200lb goaltender shouldn't be wearing pads that could fit a guy that's 220 or 235. It's clearly "bloating" and in Gigueres case, he uses something to push the shoulder pads up to cover the corners. It's bull ****.

Looks like they got those pads from the local Sports Authority.

There's making the pads smaller, and then there's making the pads too small to the point where the goaltender is at risk. And I'm not really willing to watch 9-8 hockey games, nevermind the fact that those games don't suit the Devils style.

Anyway, I think that the NHL should be worrying to put the intensity and anger back in the game. These playoffs have had almost no bad blood at all in most series. The Devs-Rags and Bruins-Habs series are the only ones I've watched that smelled of a big time rivalry, and that's what this sport needs, big time rivalries.

Pitt / Philly has had its fair share, but I think if things weren't so uptight it would be far more intense and aggressive.

It's ****** to admit, but post-lock out I think the 05-06 playoffs were so far the best.

The pads look tiny, but I think part of that is because the guy has on black pants and a black jersey, while makes his top half look huge. If he had on a colored team jersey I don't think it would look as disproportionate.

That's cool... I never linked the original article because where I first saw it, it lacked the link to 22H.

In any case, I strongly suspected a gag (the blocker being the closest thing to a giveaway) but figured it worth sharing here.

Good call.

Then let's get rid of the effeminate post-lockout "enforcement" of rules and go back to the masculine clutching and grabbing that was let go and games that feautured only 2 or 3 power plays per game.

Then we can have offense at the expense of cheating goaltenders without these 15 penalty per game divefests.

If you had just upped the size of the blocker, you would have had something there. I don't even know if that blocker is the size of a hand/wrist/forearm. Otherwise it would have been a great fake.

The funny thing about that doctored up pic is that the equipment worn by Chirs Terreri didn't seem that much bigger. I always remember him as being small and have seen other YouTube clips of him to bring back the memories, but in this particular clip, he looks like a mite or squirt goaltender or the Travelocity gnome :sarcasm:

P.S. Notice Devils fans littering the ice after the goal was waived off at 4:28 ?
