apparently no one was paying attention to NJ. Chelios persevered from what? Old age? Some employee HE probably hired killing people in his place of business?
I'm not saying Colin White deserves to win it, but you gotta be ****ing kidding me with CHELIOS.

The Award is given for the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
Chelios is 46 and in his 24th NHL season, telling me he does not fit that definition?

Shame... that's all I can say. Chelios over White? I guess coming back a full 6 months before you should from an eye injury and playing with blurred vision doesn't compare to being old and playing 10 minutes a game.
WOW.
Blake wins. (chronic inflammation of the large intestine is career threatening?) :shakehead

and a guy that nearly lost an eye and had his career ended who returned from it doesn't?
he might be a gritty player but White isn't dirty, and he spent months of rehabbing just to get back into the lineup despite what were originally rather bleak outlooks on his future.
I'll take something like that over some old mother ****er continuing to play. For all we know he took HGH when no one was looking early in his career and it helped with his longevity. ;)

actually I'm pretty sure it was somewhat life threatening, but I could be wrong.

He perfectly fits the first and last quality, sportsmanship though? Not so much.
But anyways, I don't think sportsmanship deserves to be a part of it. I also think White and Chelios deserved the nomination above the other two. Blake and Pisani struggled through some rough diseases/sicknesses, but once they defeat it I don't think they suffer any more from it (could be wrong). It's not like White suffered an injury and his eye is good now...or even 80% good. The guy is basically a cyclops and is still playing in the league.

Blake and Pisani both deserve the award and one of them will win it. Chelios definitely won't, so don't worry about it. Does White deserve a nomination? Yeah, probably. But, I mean, come on...Scott Stevens, one of the best of all time, doesn't even have a Norris Trophy to his credit. This isn't new.

I'm with you on this one. Many players come back from horrible injuries every year, but very few persevere through the grind that is the NHL for 24 seasons and can still play on a cup contender.
No offence to White and his ordeal, but this award is not solely reserved for people returning from injury.

You are correct, at the time when news first broke it was career/life threatening.

I think all three nominees are very deserving.
Ulcerative colitis (what Pisani has) can be very serious, if I remember correctly he was close to having a colostomy (check wikipedia if you don't know what it is), which would have ended his career.
