EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=njd) try to avoid losing three straight games for the first time this season and continue their mastery over the New York Rangers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=nyr) when the Atlantic Division rivals meet on Wednesday night.

New Jersey, which is 14-9-3-1 at home this season, has been outscored, 8-1 in back-to-back defeats to Vancouver and at

Philadelphia. The Devils have not lost three in a row since December 12-18, 2002.

On Tuesday, All-Star defenseman Scott Niedermayer (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=607) scored a power-play goal just over three minutes into the third period but the Devils were defeated, 4-1, by the Flyers.

The Devils fell seven points behind first-place Philadelphia in the Atlantic.

New Jersey is 21-1-13-1 in its last 36 regular-season meetings with the Rangers. The Devils improved to 13-1-2 in their last 16 regular-season home meetings in the series with a 5-0 rout on November 15 and the teams skated to a 3-3 tie in New York on January 15.

All-Star goaltender Martin Brodeur (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=686) is 26-10-15 with five shutouts lifetime against the Rangers.

Since last facing the Devils, the Rangersare 2-8-1, including a 2-5-0 mark since acquiring Jaromir Jagr (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=35) from Washington on January 23.

Jagr has four goals with the Rangers and scored twice last Wednesday, when New York blew a third-period lead and suffered a 4-3 home loss to the Minnesota Wild (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=min).

Mike Dunham (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=1331), who spent parts of two seasons as a backup to Brodeur before selected by the Nashville Predators (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=nas) in the 1998 expansion draft, stopped just 18 of 22 shots and is 1-5-2 in his last eight decisions.

The Rangers, who have missed the playoffs in six straight seasons, are nine points behind the New York Islanders (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=nyi) for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. New

York also trails Florida by one point and Buffalo by three.

Without Rheaume, the Rangers are done. :p Expect Marty to bounce back after last night, but not so sure about players like White, with NYR agitators like Simon, Barnaby, etc. Rangers are good at drawing retaliatory penalties, so look for them to pick on Brown, Gomez. Hopefully, tonight's theme is discipline. Albelin should get the night off, if Hale is ready. Igor should be in, scratch Rasmussen. deVries and Poti are due back.

Devils 3(Pandolfo, Larionov, Rafalski)
NYR 1(Holik)

Nothing like a little Ranger tonic to make for a pleasurable evening. I like the 3-1 prediction, with goals from Elias (2) and Rafalski.

It seems from the Yahoo! boxscore the Rangers are dressing two fewer players tonight.

Edit: Ignore this point. Rosters are even now. HF is still slow though...

BTW, if HFBoards slow for everyone right now? (It's very slow over here...)

Same here. Just us Devils fans slowing down the pace of the board. It's defensive posting.

Our D is suffering... You just don't see teams get chances like these against us... We're only one period in, and there's been about three games of overall and defensive mistakes.

Including this one at the buzzer that could make it 2-0.

Checking line out of synch, lack of scoring from the defense, no bone crushing hits, and no fights.

Look at Paul Martin picking his ass next to Marty on that replay. That's a goal for sure. Martin's been pretty rough for the last few games. I'm getting really frustrated with his play as of late. All of his AP game shots are gonna be of him looking at the back of the net if you go by tonights and last nights games.

I would be surprised if he's feeling the burnout factor. Stevens is out, Hale is in and out, Albelin & Brown don't see a lot of game action. NJ is depending on Rafalski and Niedemayer to make the sound defensive plays. White is an enigma. I remember the 1-0 victory vs. Toronto, Martin played something like 21 mins.

Seriously, it's one thing to get outhustled, or even be defeated by a superior play/player... But for a defenseman with a Devils logo on his chest to just STAND THERE by the net with at least two seconds to go when the opposing team is attacking is pityful. Just pityful.

Burns better not have a voice by the time the 2nd period starts.

Yeah, it couldn't hurt. Right now, NJ has too many offensive d-man trying to make defensive plays. Obviously White is a total failure right now...

For the record, I was the one that voted for Rags in regulation for the poll question. I was going to say something about losing streaks this year compared to last, but I think I'd rather get my mind off the Devils for a week or ten.

Lou has some tough choices to make in the coming weeks.

1. Does he make a trade for a top 3 d-man?
2. Does he hope Stevens returns and make a trade for a forward?
3. Does he do nothing and just toss the season because Stevens is out?
4. Fire the coach?

:dunno: If I'm Lou, I do number 2 above banking on how durable a player Scott Stevens has proven himself to be over the course of his professional hockey career. Coming into this season we were all marvelling over how few games he's missed to date. Its truly a remarkable ironman kind of story when you reflect on how incredible he is playing through pain and sickness. His threshhold for pain has to be off the charts. I think it would take close to an act of god to keep him out of the lineup come postseason myself. Skip number 1 and deal instead for a #4-5 defender for depth.

Number 3, I can't see him standing pat doing nothing as he's a GM who has made a name for himself rebuilding and fine tuning while winning the ultimate prize in hockey.

4. is still way too soon. A 3 game losing streak (potentially) is pretty bad news for us, but its because we're spoiled pretty bad watching a team as consistent as the Devils are imo. If GM's fired their coaches everytime a team lost 3 games in a row, we'd be watching Spongebob Square Pants coaching in the NHL.

The Devils can start making up for the fiasco of these last 3 games with this stretch of sub-par teams, and maybe they can allow 2 goals or less for a change, and get at least ONE shutout. Remember that talk about breaking the goals against record? Don't think we'll hear much about that again this year.
