GentlemanOfLeisure 02-11-2004, 12:57 PM Jeff Halpern from washington is a right handed center who can score, who's defensively sound, young (27) and is good on faceoffs.
Christian Berglund and a 4th round pick to Washington for Jeff Halpern?

Another checking third liner? :dunno:

Like it or not Bondra, Satan, Zhamnov, and Lang are not coming here. Detroit, NYR, Dallas, Toronto can all out bid us, and can afford them. The Devils can't. The Devils are going to have to get both a good defenseman and a forward. So you might as well get someone who can win faceoffs, score 15 goals a season, penalty kill, work hard, and is a righty.

Well, he'd be a lot cheaper than an O'Neill(R), Brind'Amour(L), or Francis(L) packaged with a Boughner, Hill, or Wesley.
GentlemanOfLeisure 02-11-2004, 02:18 PM Let phili and toronto overpay for over-the-hill guys like Brind'Amour and Bondra. Basically phili traded Woywitka, a 1st round pick, and i think a 3rd for a 37 year old washed up goalie, a grinder, and a so-so prospect.

I think the pick would have to be better than a 4th to get him... if Washington would deal him at all. He's exactly the type of player they want to build with; younger, fairly cheap, and relatively productive. If it were a 2nd, or maybe a 3rd, they might do it.
I think he'd be an excellent addition. He's Madden-esque. :)

I really don't agree with all the names being too expensive...
Satan - agreed - too expensive
Bondra - he could be had for very little and is nearing end of contract
Zhamnov - last year of contract
Lang - too expensive
I would not be surprised to see Lou make a Mogilny -type move again this year.
Brodeur 02-11-2004, 03:24 PM I would not be surprised to see Lou make a Mogilny -type move again this year.
Pavol Demitra's name entered my head today........but probably too pricy for us, both in terms of contract (RFA this summer, 6.5 mil qualifyer) and assets required for trade.
DARKSIDE 02-11-2004, 04:10 PM I'm not sure the Caps would make this kid available. I also like Jeff Halpern, but, after Lang, he's their number 2 center. Just don't see him on the market!
Tbg1515 02-11-2004, 04:33 PM What about these possibilities
Sign Sergei Berezin, all it would take would be a contract (Would help out the power Play)
Peter Bondra- Could be had for eiuther, Hale & 2nd....Or Berglund, RUpp, & 3rd
Miro Satan- May be a little more expensive......Rupp, Berglund, Hale, Demarchi, & 2nd
Keith Carney & Rob Niedermeyer- Could be had for a package of young guys and picks.
Patrick Marleau-But highly doubt that theyd trade him, without getting a #1 center back
Ron Francis- Could be had for Picks
Yanic Perault- could be had for a defenseman preferably White
sluggo* 02-11-2004, 07:05 PM I think the best foward (who could be avaible) in the NHL that the Devils should go after would be Chris Drury. Hes not an overly expensive superstar player (which we all know, are players the Devils generally don't after), hes fast, not bad in his own end, has good offensive skills (he'd be 3rd on the Devils in goals and points if he moved over right now), he scores big goals, and knows what it takes to win a cup.
stanleycaps98 02-12-2004, 12:50 PM Keep in mind, Halper is a native Marylander, and grew up a Caps fan. Part of the Caps marketing is around Jeff and is roots playing for the Junior Caps, etc.
It would be hard pressed to see Caps management trade him, particularly in conference.
On the other hand, the Caps have 3 or 4 prospects who could take his spot on the Third line.
