Lou's Koolaid 05-04-2008, 06:17 PM I have an noble idea on what to due with this oldie but, goodie none as the Izod Center. Let's donate it to our needy friends in Long Island. We raise it up with a couple of really powerfull hellacoptors and place right on top on the old NVMC, just like my new 45" plasma sits on top of my old carussel T.V.:sarcasm:

It will always be Byrne/CAA to me, the memories will always remain, but its time to get rid of the old dinosaur.
NJDevils16W 05-05-2008, 11:50 AM I guess it's a tough call whether or not to keep the Meadowlands Arena open. One side is saying the building has nothing going on and the other side most notably the NJSEA (the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority) are saying the place is making more money then they ever have. So who do we believe? Let's examine the facts here. The Devils are gone and so is the revenue that they brought in 41nights a season not including the playoffs. I have to believe that between the 12 dollar parking fee and everything else the NJSEA made more money then they do when the Arena is dark with no event going on. Not to mention they would have made a killing with two 19,040 sellout crowds during the playoffs a couple of weeks ago. They claim they book more family shows now that the Devils are gone but it seems they are actually booking less because some of the shows are going to the Prudential Center. Besides you need anchor tenants to keep a building alive. You can't rely on family shows and the circus because A. They are only once or twice a year events and B. After all is said and done and everything is paid the NJSEA doesn't get much of a profit off of them. Speaking of anchor tenants the Nets are trying to get out of there as soon as possible. That will leave the Arena dark another 41 nights a year. Are there really that many family shows and concerts going around to fill 80 plus nights? I doubt it. Once the Nets leave it would seem like a waste of money to me to keep the building open for scattered events here and there. And who is to say that most of those shows will continue to book events at the Meadowlands when you have the brand new Prudential Center a mile down the road?
How the NJSEA just allowed the Devils and Nets to leave is beyond me. They should have been pushing for a new Arena for both teams. Imagine The Rock was built at the Meadowlands? They would still have both teams and every freaking concert and family show that came to the state of New Jersey. Forget Xanadu the Meadowlands would be the site of six professional sports team with TWO new venues a football stadium and an Arena. This complex could have been the envy of the sports world. You are talking a serious amount of cash here. There mistake was thinking this Xanadu project was going to be the cure all. They thought Xanadu was going to bring in record profits. So then the Devils and Nets became expendable. And now of course it's back firing big time. Xanadu is looking like it's going to be a colossal failure and more and more people are calling for the Izod Center to be closed.
So what's next for the Meadowlands? The race track is dead more nights then not. There is no way that's bringing in any money. Izod is in danger of being closed down. The Nets and RedBull are on the way out. I don't know what to expect from this Xanadu project. I guess the future of the Meadowlands is going to be just a football field for two New York teams the Jets and Giants. That will be profitable for the teams not the NJSEA. For the most part the Jets and Giants will own the new stadium and keep most of the profits.
RIP the Meadowlands ??
JerryGigantic 05-05-2008, 02:06 PM Been going there since it opened, and Brendan Byrne named it after himself (pure class, lol), but that entire complex hurts my eyes. (May be the toxic swamp gas...)
I say burn it to the ground, and piss on the ashes.
Just an opinion.
pattyelias 05-07-2008, 10:13 PM I feel guilty that I'm actually going to try and get tickets for Nine Inch Nails at the arena formerly known as Continental. It will definitely be weird going back there.

Letters for Friday May 9, 2008
Four votes to keep Izod Center open
The Record's recent poll suggesting that people would rather see the Izod Center (formerly Continental Airlines Arena) close in favor of the Prudential Center in Newark cannot accurately reflect the feelings of the people living in Bergen County or in the Meadowlands area ("One arena too many?" Page A-1, May 4).
While it is true that Izod does not have all the bells and whistles of the Prudential Center, it still offers many people a convenient, safe location for sporting events, concerts and children's entertainment. The arena also is a source of jobs and income for local residents and businesses.
My concern is that some public officials will use the poll to determine public policy. That would be tragic. Izod should not be sacrificed to help Newark and the owners of the new Prudential Center. Political calculations or political correctness — or, for that matter, public opinion polls — should not be the basis for determining economic policy.
The true test of whether Izod should remain open is the free market. If Izod continues to draw crowds and make money, let it stay where it is. The Prudential Center's owners should work hard to make their arena successful — not come to East Rutherford looking to eliminate competition.

I strongly disagree with the polls ("One arena too many?" Page A-1, May 4). I am for keeping the Izod Center open.
I will try to avoid going to the Newark arena as long as possible. I will always pick East Rutherford over Newark. I will pick Madison Square Garden over Newark. The only thing that might drag me to Newark is seeing my favorite band, the Rolling Stones. Otherwise I will pass on any event there as a protest.
The Meadowlands complex has a nice open parking lot in which to meet friends and tailgate. There will soon be an NJ Transit train stop there.

I have a few comments about the Izod Center no longer being needed ("One arena too many," Page A-1, May 4).
I do not agree with the 55 percent of respondents to your survey. I believe that the Izod Center should remain open because, at a minimum, it will promote competition between the sites.
As for the survey questions, one key question was missing: "Have you ever attended events at the Izod Center and the Prudential Center?"
It would have been interesting to see the results among respondents who actually had attended events at both facilities. I have.

Regarding "One arena too many" (Page A-1, May 4):
I believe that the poll results showing a preference for shutting down the Izod Center in the Meadowlands are a political ploy to pump up Newark's sagging economy.
If they close the Izod Center, my family and I will go to Madison Square Garden in Manhattan before we venture into Newark.

ILikeItVeryMuch 05-09-2008, 07:27 PM Bergenite: "There are b..b..b..lllack p.pp.ppeople in Newark!?"
**** them, every person I have brought to a Devils game this past season had a great time and found Downtown Newark a pleasant surprise.
There have been more crimes at the Meadowlands Complex this past year than in the 1 square mile area around the Rock.
NJ.com sucks, its pretty much overrun with Fake New Yorkers.

I always love the, "oh, I'd go to MSG before I ever go to Newark" :sarcasm:
And it's not NJ.com, it's the Records website. The Record is Bergen's local paper and therfore reflects the provincial thinking of of many Bergen County residents. It's this type of territorial thinking that hurts the state of New Jersey.
Instead of thinking of this arena serving the greater good of the state of New Jersey and its professional sports franchise, they get all territorial and would rather see the team move to Seattle as opposed to building an arena anywhere outside of Bergen County.
ILikeItVeryMuch 05-09-2008, 07:45 PM **** Bergen County, give it to New York, they all want to be a part of it anyway.
jkrdevil 05-09-2008, 09:27 PM I'm sure the Meadowlands will be so safe once Xanadu opens.:sarcasm:

There is no state of NJ, just various mini-states that convene in Trenton and run a corrupt centralized government.
The nearest thing to a "Jersey" identity is probably the shore. But they'll be overrun with Canadians and various scuzz in a few weeks. ;) (Canadians and scuzz are not necessarily one and the same.)
The Bergen people drink the kool-aid a little better than most, but it's pretty par for the state. We have no "great" city, we just have a bunch of people that leech on to someone elses, kinda like CT, CT has no identity, it's NY CT and Boston CT.
And I guess the guy that likes the "open" parking lots hasn't been there in awhile. There are no more "open" parking lots, the place looks like a warzone. And as for crime, well the Xanadu thing has already been pointed out. They don't want to come to Newark? Hmmm, a mall with mass transit, then Newark is coming to them. Not that the various entities in Newark don't already work in the 'burbs. One day the **** will hit the fan and these people won't be able to deny it anymore.
DevsOwnYou 05-09-2008, 11:30 PM I have not spent one cent in Bergen County since the Devils last ever game at CAA.
I have and will continue to boycott the entire Meadowlands Sports Complex, the town of East Rutherford (remember the clown Mayor rooting for Ottawa) and Bergen County in general.
There is no reason for me to go to Bergen County at all now.
I used to frequent Bergen County restaurants, bars, gas stations, liquor stores, convenience stores before and after Devils games.
I never really liked Bergen County to begin with due to the snobbery. The Bergen County politicians and most residents only do things and vote what is good for their county, not what is good for New Jersey.
These dopes that wrote letters to the editor have their heads in the sand, they are also probably senile old foggies so don't let their venom ruin your weekend. For every moron who won't go to the Rock in Newark their are 5 other people who love it.
ILikeItVeryMuch 05-09-2008, 11:31 PM Remember though, NJ is a "****hole" even though the people calling it that seem to always end up at our shores in the summer.
I have been up and down the Eastern Seaboard, NJ is one of the best places to live. I love my home, wouldnt trade it for anything.
NJDEVILS17 05-11-2008, 08:49 PM I guess I can add this to my other reason for boycotting Bergen County.

That's kinda stupid. I live in Bergen County and find it quite nice. I don't judge a whole county on how 1 town or one sports complex behaves.
Furthermore Morristown and other areas of Morris country are just as "stuck up" as any area in Bergen (except maybe ridgewood. :sarcasm:)
Most of my immediate area at the rock are from Bergen. jeesh.
Reverend_Hellh0und 05-12-2008, 10:21 AM I guess I can add this to my other reason for boycotting Bergen County.
So do you drive around the whole country when traveling or is this a soft boycott? :sarcasm:

I know there are lots of Devs fans from Bergen County, I'm not talking about them.
It's the constant Devils/Rock/Newark bashing from Bergen County residents and politicians that I'm referring about. Again, I have no reason at all to go to Bergen County. And Morris County supports the Devils as good as any county in NJ.
