Devils sign letter of intent to move to Newark

Feb. 9, 2004
SportsLine.com wire reports

NEWARK, N.J. -- The owners of the New Jersey Devils agreed to relocate the team to a new arena in Newark that is slated to be completed before the start of the 2007 season, according to a letter sent to mayor Sharpe James on Monday.

"This is the right move, for the Devils, our fans and for the state," Devils president Lou Lamoriello said in the letter.

The team and the city hope to have the 18,000-seat arena open by July 1, 2007. The arena would be part of a complex that would also include an office building, a parking garage for 1,340 vehicles and a 300-room hotel.

The letter did not state how much the arena would cost or who would pay for it. A spokeswoman for James declined comment. Messages left at the Devils' offices Monday night were not returned. A joint news conference with city and Devils officials is scheduled for Thursday.

:rolly: :handclap: :yo: etc.

Someone started a post at another board that said... "Devils are moving...' and then inside it said to Newark. Made my heart skip a beat.

Lamoriello looks scary in that picture.

hmm...maybe I should post more often...but still...that news just made my day, although I would definitely not want to be at the other end of the table negotiating a contract opposite of that face

...not that there's anything wrong with that... ;)

Guys, I'm from Montreal.
Where exactly is Newark.
How far from the current home?

Newark is 20 minutes south of the current home of the Devils in East Rutherford. All the NHL teams who fly in to play the Devils fly in at Newark International Airport. The arena would be 2 min away from the airport. Basically it would attract the Devils fan who lives in Central NJ like me. It takes me an hour and 1/2 to get to the CAA. It would take me only an hour to get to Newark airport.

I love Lou Lamoriello, but he does look like an Umpah Loompah. Especially in person.

So nice to finally hear this news....obviously, nothing is set in stone but with new arena and a minority owner who is set to become the majority owner...things are looking good for NJ...

I don't care about walking in Newark, I'd rather do that than drive-in general. I'm taking the train to game! I wonder what train it would be...the D Train, perhaps? Would I get a ticket for the Martin Brodeur Express? Would I be riding the Lamoriello Line? Hmmm...

Excellent, excellent news. Too bad we lost the Nets, but thank god the Devils look like they are staying.

So the devils would still be the New Jersey Devils, just their arena would be in a different location?

As far as I know, that will be the case. This is the best news I've read in a LONG time. It's great to see things getting done. This will make it a lot easier for me to catch my first live Devils game someday. I fly through Newark everytime I go to Seattle and I would gladly stop over an extra day to see Marty B and co.

Ok, good. I don't like Newark, sounds too much like New York. :p :p

Um, why would they even contemplate changing the name to the Newark Devils?

That's like saying they should have been the East Rutherford Devils before the move.

It seems as though rtafts is impyling that he was worried they might change their name to the Newark Devils.

Oh ok, I took it as him saying that he doesn't like Newark because it sounds too much like New York, anyhow they'll always be New Jersey, it would be a marketing disaster to change it to Newark.

It was more of a joke than anything.

Why was your first post on this board one that asked why the Devils weren't called the New York Devils then???
