Corey Perry (leg laceration) skated for 30 minutes before practice Tuesday and then joined his teammates for part of the practice. Perry said he felt good after the skate and should be back at some point in the first round. Todd Marchant is out due to injury and Doug Weight is the odd man out. The lines in practice were: Kunitz-Getzlaf-Selanne : Bertuzzi-Carter-Ryan : R. Niedermayer-Pahlsson-Moen : May-Sutherby-Parros. The defensive pairings were: Pronger-O'Donnell : S. Niedermayer-Beauchemin : Schneider-Huskins. Jean-Sebastien Giguere is expected to start on Thursday.

Playoff time usually means Rob Niedermayer finally earns his pay. I hope Todd Marchant plays as well. I like Bobby Ryan but I think the kid should sit for the first game.

Great news, but I'd rather him take his time to fully recover. We need to take advantage of Dallas missing Zubov.

Id take him over Weight at this point. He'll sit when Marchant is ready, and Parros will probably sit in favor of Weight.

I think Rando's going to mix and match the top two lines over the course of the game. Bertuzzi-Carter-Selanne would have the potential to produce. He'll throw some different looks at Dallas.

No Marchant worries me a little. It may be a little harsh, but the idea of May and Parros on the ice at the same time for any decent stretch is a terrifying thought for me. That is, unless Carlyle plays them for 3 minutes a game like last year. Either way, I hope Marchant's injury isn't too serious (the story link didn't work); he's the kind of guy who earns his pay in the postseason.

Also, this appears to be the first playoff run since 2003 that we'll start with Giguere. After his minor injury in 2006 and the birth of his son last year, it'll almost be a little weird seeing him between the pipes from the get-go.

I don't mind having May get decent ice time at all. He plays hard and with tons of energy, makes smart plays and is pretty defensively responsible. He's on another level than Parros in terms of skill.

Marchant is injured? In Adam Brady's blog yesterday, he said the lines at Wednesday's practice were:

Bertuzzi-Getzlaf-Marchant
Kunitz-Carter-Selanne
God's line
4th line was a mix of May-Parros-Sutherby-Weight-Ryan

At least Selanne and Kunitz are back together; that seems to work best so far. I like Getzy with them as well. Ryan and Tuzzi had some chemistry early on so maybe that'll work as well for the second line.

I wanted to say good luck (honestly). This is going to be a great series that i think will come down to the extremely stingy Anaheim D and the scoring depth for Dallas. I hate it when teams from both states i have lived in for most my life are battling it out in the first round. Would rather see Anaheim win the cup if Dallas doesn't (2nd to only the kings as my fav. California team..but they suck). So sit back and drink a beer and get ready to watch a great great series.........!

Marchant is $$$ against Dallas in his career for the playoffs.

I grew up in Canyon Country (Over by Six Flags)..So my Cali ties run deep.

I'm guessing no it isn't official, but based on the practice lines, I would assume he's either sitting, or relegated to 4th line duties.

Well boys, my prediction for this years playoffs is, we will see why Scott Niedermeyer is the best defenceman in the world. He had a nagging injury last year and still won the Conn Smythe. I have a feeling we will see a level we have yet to see from him.

That was about as bad as start as anyone could have imagined. Stupid penalties, poor execution, and our stars are our worst players.

Joe Canada
04-10-2008, 10:54 PM
That first goal was bad. Giguere's been inconsistent between saves. Some shots are bouncing off of him like he's Hiller, and other ones are sticking no problem like they've been for the past two months.

He made a few decent saves toward the end there, hopefully he's worked off all the rust from the quiet first ten minutes. Getzlaf made a nice move in the zone there, but he held on a second too long... again, so the Dallas guy got his stick on it and it ended up being a harmless chance. We can't afford to get shots from ten feet out that are harmless.

Sutherby's penalty was brutal.. could have been interference or cross-checking. It's bad enough to take a penalty in the offensive zone, worse when you're doing it in your 5-10 minutes of ice time. I thought Bertuzzi played well enough, very happy he stuck up for Selanne. I don't mind that penalty at all because Teemu shouldn't have to defend himself if he wants to stay focused.

Hockey Duckie
04-10-2008, 10:55 PM
Forget about going after Ott. Target Modano, Ribeiro and Richards.

I agree. But I think that's what the Stars were doing after Modano got slammed by Scotty on the Stars' PP. Except, the Stars are much more excessive about it.

Selanne should have just skated away.

190Octane

Turnovers are killing us, as are the penalties. At least last year the PK kept the puck on the perimeter and didnt let passes through the middle. They look god awful.

Urgency needs to pick up as well. The skill players look lazy, and its effecting the forecheck. I miss Perry and his reckless gumbiness.

To be fair, that blame can be partially shared with whatever other three random guys are out there on the PK that are actually trying. :sarcasm:

I think for the first time this year, nerves are showing. All of our penalties were deserved, and most a result of over-eagerness. We need to tone it down and remain aggressive. Toe the line, but get close enough to push it, so to speak.

The Stars have been fantastic. The game gets a whole lot easier when you score 4 short-handed goals, but they've been close to perfect for most of the game. If they play like that every game, they'll win this series, probably the next one, and the next one after that. I don't see them doing that, but who knows.

From the Ducks' side, Pronger absolutely blew, the pk obviously blew, and the team took too many penalties. Improve in those areas, and it will be a different story.

This is a good time to bring up Helene Elliot's article today, that I think is pretty applicable:
Ducks don't appear to be on track to repeat
They have given it a good ride despite injuries and late returns of key players, but passion and conviction of last season appear to be missing as they go into playoffs.

A year ago, the Ducks cruised through the season fueled by the conviction they were on a mission that would not end until they hoisted the Stanley Cup.

This season, they scrambled to score goals, find effective line combinations, and stay out of the penalty box.

"I think last year we had more of that eye of the tiger, 'We need to do this,' " defenseman Chris Pronger said.

"Going into this year it was, 'Man, it's here already?' "

A long playoff journey and short summer made it feel as if the Ducks began defending their title a few days after the last speck of confetti was scraped off the ice at the Honda Center.

It also feels like their reign will end short of a repeat.

It won't end in the first round against the Dallas Stars, a series that begins tonight in Anaheim.

Maybe not in the second round, either. The Ducks' terrific goaltending -- second-best in the NHL this season -- and experienced defense should compensate for an offense that was the weakest among the 16 playoff qualifiers.

Their reign will end, though, leaving the Detroit Red Wings of 1996-97 and 1997-98 as the last team to win back-to-back championships.

Continued here. http://www.latimes.com/sports/hockey/nhl/ducks/la-sp-elliott10apr10,1,5714578.column

Doesn't sound like they even bothered to try to send a message at the end. That's what's most disappointing to me.

That's what I miss too. Even when they lost, you knew they were going to bring it next game. It was like they felt greatly insulted and embarassed any time they were beaten by a good team, and did anything to send a message w/ tough/"dirty" play towards the end of an out-of-reach game...then the next game, they'd totally dominate. They never just laid down, or shrugged and accepted losing--they had too much (or the perfect amount of) pride. This year, you don't get that feeling.

It also made losing more tolerable and entertaining (as entertaining as losing can be) because if the Ducks started the rough stuff in a loss, the winning team's fans were more focused on crying about the atrocities the Ducks had commited against their players instead of the fact that their team won.

Anyway, hope I'm wrong. Hope this was a wake-up call (thinking game 3 of last year's WCF) like some of you said

I've actually seen little correlation over the years between offensive talent, and having a consistently good power play. It has more to do with confidence as a unit, and the Ducks don't have it right now. When the confidence is high, the puck is moved around at a good pace, the battles for loose pucks are won, and the right shots are taken. The Ducks didn't do any of that last night.

They didn't execute at all at even strength or on the PK. It has little to do with being motivated or having passion, and everything to do with being focused and disciplined. I think they'll be better in Game 2.

Related, but to me a PP needs poise and discipline. To stick to the system. But since our team has demonstrated little poise and discipline all year at ES, that also translates to the PP. Hence our suckitude.

Bertuzzi was actually the best and most dangerous player on the ice
The power of the stache needs to get in there

Rewatching the game, I have to agree with Dirk. The most dangerous offensive players were Bertuzzi, and then Kunitz, and then Selanne.

Getz was invisible, as was everyone else. And Bertuzzi wasn't that great, really. Just shoot and crash the net. All this endless stickhandling bull that Getz does now is useless. He's not a finesse player. Kick it to the points and drive the net. That's why we pay our blue line obscene money.

You re-watched the game :amazed:, wow I could barely watch it live.

Anyways, this is where all the leadership we have will show up, Getz needs to have a good game if they are going to win. Weird that Bert showed the most heart last night, maybe he stole everyone elses?

Very disappointed with the game but i am not surprised at all.. Its so predictable: the dump in, the cycle and the pass back at the point..... :shakehead. As long as the Stars players block shots from the point i dont think the Ducks can pull out of this one. We need more creativity.

im still scratching my head as to why we didnt goon it up the 3rd period. we played less aggressive that period than the other 2!!

It's kind of hard sending a message when your home rink is half-empty and booing you.

I'm just as confident as I was before the game that the Ducks will win this series. The first ten minutes we flat out dominated Dallas at all ends of the ice. We took a bad penalty and gave up a goal. From that point on we were down. The boys will come out to play tomorrow and put on quite the show.

It's laughable when Ducks fans are already calling it a sweep, wishing they didn't buy tickets, etc... give me a break. After the game tomorrow, you guys are going to say "Wow, look how good we are"! Get it together...

No it isn't, that would have given them something to cheer for at least.

However, given our bad rep, its probably good nothing too over the top happened as its probably expected and we would have been hit hard with the suspension stick, I agree with ericnut, its 1 bad game, get real people.

We had some terrible games last year (5-1 loss to redwings, pronger got suspended), only to come out with the greatest win of the season.

It is just 1 game. Joking aside, my stance on the team hasn't changed. I've just never been convinced all year that they have it in them. And even despite this game, I still expect them to win this round. I just expect them to lose some time after that. The team is just too inconsistent and hasn't shown enough desire or mental fortitude to win the Cup.

Last seasons playoffs any game we were getting dominated we would send messages and go onto win the following game. I was disappointed to see them take the loss yesterday with no emotion.
Its true that the league warned the Ducks and Caryle now they cant play the game the same way that won a cup.
