EDMONTON SUN: Terry Jones reports Oilers GM Kevin Lowe commented on those players on his roster whose names have popped up in recent trade speculation. He said Ryan Smyth was "a high-priced guy you have to keep" and doesn't want to move Jason Smith while he still has potentially five good years remaining in him. Lowe did admit that if a team came offering up a young powerplay defenceman that he'd "entertain some names.'' Lowe also doesn't plan to shop any of his promising young players or prospects.

Is Lowe saying "If Lou comes calling a deal could be worked out for Paul Martin?"
Unthinkable

Certainly seems like it to me. This post pretty much addresses the trade proposal that Mizral had posted on here the other day just as I figured it would.

We really don't need another LW in Smyth and in my opinion Martin's value is higher than J. Smith alone, edmonton doesn't really have RW or C that address our needs.............I couldn't imagine a deal working out were martin was involved?
Edmonton couldn't possibly think they could get Martin for Smith straight up, could they?

Edmonton could possibly think they could get Martin for Smith straight up, could they? I think its one of those posturing moves where he's inferring that he'll be more open to offers if GM's aren't trying to shortchange him on proposals that have Edmonton wheeling away one of their two big character players. Budget constraints will always make it a priority that young promising youth comes back to Edmonton when they deal away their Guerin's, Carter's, etc... York and Dvorak would address our needs, but I'm sure they are both off limits with how important they are to the Oilers winning games this season. Might be a stretch to call Paul Martin a certifiable power play specialist when he's only managed 3 of his 10 points (all of them assists) with the man advantage. But he's still obviously a work in progress and should have decent trade value for now.

IMO, Lou shouldn't trade Martin until he locks up Niedermayer (LONG TERM!).
