wildcat48 04-04-2008, 10:25 PM Ducks sign senior forward from Niagara
The Ducks have begun to rebuild their minor league club when they signed Matt Caruana to a one-year contract earlier this week. Caruana, a senior, spent all four seasons with the Niagara Purple Eagles where he was the captain this past season.

snarktacular 04-05-2008, 01:33 AM This is the cap nerd in me, but does the fact that it's a 1 year contract mean it's the Pirates who signed him and not the Ducks? I think he's considered a "23 year old," meaning the ELC should be 2 years? Or is the 2 years just the max allowed for an ELC, and teams can sign a guy for shorterer than that?
wildcat48 04-05-2008, 01:41 AM No, he was signed by the Ducks. It's a one-year deal which will take effect next year. He was signed to PTO for the remainder of this season and assigned to Portland by Anaheim.
As for the cap questions, I'd have to research them if I get a free moment or maybe somebody else has an answer.

Just to be uber-technical, maybe it's technically a 2 year deal, but this sliver of a season counts as a year? So they just tell the public it's a "1 year deal," only counting next year? Just because I was under the impression that ELCs are all set in length, and he is a "23 year old," meaning it should be a 2 year deal.
His numbers look OK. Not super impressive, but along the lines of Miller and Carter. He was a co-captain, so that's nice. But it doesn't look like Niagara plays in nearly as good a conference as MSU or Mankato State. So maybe the numbers were put up against easier competition?
190Octane 04-05-2008, 04:21 PM what's interesting is that his last 3 years he was pretty much at a point per game, no improvement, no drop off.
wildcat48 04-05-2008, 04:29 PM Not according to Anaheim, it's a one year deal which will begin next season. He was also signed to a PTO and assigned to Portland for the remainder of this season. It has to be that way or he would be ineligible to play in Portland because of the clear day roster.

That consistency is nice...I noticed that too. :)

Yes and no... you would think that as he got older he'd start scoring more?
Injuries maybe?
Duckstudd269 04-05-2008, 07:57 PM so will he most likely be in Anaheim or Portland next year?

Portland...well....whatever Anaheim's minor league affiliate is....

carwin19 04-08-2008, 07:50 AM What are his chances of getting on the playoff roster.
SamitheGreat 04-08-2008, 12:08 PM About the same as Getzlaf being sent to the minors for the playoffs.
wildcat48 04-08-2008, 06:48 PM We can lock this thread if the mods feel fight.
I received word earlier today that Caruana has NOT been signed to a contract by Ducks.
I've double checked with the Ducks and they confirmed he hasn't been signed to a ELC, only an ATO with the prospect of an AHL deal next season.
Obobo,
This might explain why it was odd he received a one-year contract as compared to a two-year contract.
carwin19 04-08-2008, 09:19 PM Check again...........He'll be whereever theire affiliat is next year..........and don't be suprised about Porland s playoff roster either.............You guys have he deal all wrong too

are u working for Anaheim, carwin, or Portland cause Wildcat's usually spot on about these things, if it is an ATO, then Caruana is done effective after Saturday.
carwin19 04-08-2008, 09:44 PM It is possible that he might be done after saturday...but not for sure yet.....and he is going to be signed for next year .............watch him play tomorrow
wildcat48 04-08-2008, 11:53 PM I have double checked....When I recieved word about this I confirmed it with the Ducks and they told me...
Caruana has not signed a contract with the Ducks. He is currently on an amateur tryout. There is no NHL deal for next season. There may be an opportunity down the road for an AHL contract.

As for being done on Saturday, that's not true. If he plays well this weekend, he may see action in the first round of the playoffs. That's why he was signed to an ATO - so he'd be eligible to play in the playoffs.

when do ATO's expire then, Wildcat, because it seems awfully foolish for teams, playoffs or not, to sign players to such contracts and then have those already listed as of March 1st who aren't here when the CDR's were released. I understand we'd likely get Bobby Ryan back when Anaheim is eliminated and does that take precedence over players under an ATO as compared to a SPC. Wouldn't it make sense to sign SPC or ELC's?
carwin19 04-15-2008, 07:19 AM Anyway, nice to see him get 5 games in late in the year.Might not play but I here he's sticking around for the plaoffs.
