The New Jersey Devils are already assured of playing in the postseason and may know if they have home-ice advantage for the opening round when they take the ice on Friday night.

The Philadelphia Flyers, meanwhile, are simply hoping to make the playoffs as they meet the Devils for the final time in the regular season at the Wachovia Center.

The Devils (45-28-7) will clinch the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference if the New York Rangers get no points in their game with the New York Islanders on Thursday. New Jersey also could lock up home-ice advantage with either a win over the Rangers on Sunday at the Prudential Center.

"That's the thing we need to get," the Devils' Zach Parise said of having the home-ice edge in the quarterfinals.

New Jersey is 24-14-2 at home this season, and has only three regulation losses in its last 13 at its new arena.

The Devils were blanked in their first game against the Flyers this season, but have won six straight from them by a combined 28-12 score with special teams play being the key. Over the last four meetings, the Devils are 8-for-24 on the power play, and they tied a club record with five man-advantage goals in a 7-3 road win on Jan. 22.

Philadelphia (40-29-11) enters this game ninth in the East, one point behind Boston and Washington, who are tied for seventh.

They will be returning home to face a New Jersey team which has won three in a row -- all after regulation -- including a 3-2 shootout victory over Boston on Wednesday.

Parise was the hero for the second straight game after beating the Bruins' Tim Thomas for the lone goal in the tiebreaker. On Tuesday, Parise tallied his team-leading 32nd goal 29 seconds into overtime of a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders that clinched the Devils' 11th straight playoff appearance.

"We are trying to move forward and play well going into the playoffs," said New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur, who stopped all four Bruins he faced in the shootout en route to his 43rd win. "We got rewarded by a big goal at the end."

After losing five consecutive starts in Philadelphia between February 2004 and March 2006, Brodeur is 6-1-1 with a 3.07 goals-against average in eight starts there. He is 16-1-1 in his last 18 starts against the Flyers overall.

Philadelphia had picked up five of a possible six points through a three-game swing in the New York City area, but was beaten 4-2 by Pittsburgh on Wednesday in its final road game of 2007-08. The Flyers will close the regular season on Sunday against the Atlantic Division champion Penguins.

"We still hold our fate in our hands. If we win our next two we're in," the Flyers' Mike Richards said. "Two games at home is a good position to be in."

Philadelphia has won three in a row at home, and is 6-2-0 there since a six-game losing streak from Feb. 6-23.

Scott Hartnell and Jeff Carter scored first-period goals for the Flyers on Wednesday. Daniel Briere had one assist, extending his point streak to seven games (five goals, five assists).

Briere, who's wrapping up his first season with the Flyers after signing an eight-year, $52 million free-agent deal, has only two goals and two assists in seven games versus New Jersey. He leads Philadelphia with 31 goals and is second with 72 points, two behind Richards.

We might as well give it our all and lock up that fourth spot. Too bad either way it looks more and more like we'll be facing the Rangers in the first round.

Then again we have all seen that the playoffs are a whole different story..

You'll be fine, wear your jersey with pride. Just don't act like an idiot and they'll leave you alone. You can cheer for the Devils, but DON'T act like you just won the cup when we score, or if we win!

Devils didn't get any help with their playoff clinch, and it doesn't look like they're going to get any help clinching home ice. Time to go out tonight and win that themselves!

This is pretty close to a must-win for Philadelphia. Washington's last game will be against a Florida team on the second night of a back to back, you have to figure they'll win that one. And it looks like the Capitals will have the first tiebreaker (wins), so Philly has to beat them outright - which means they need to win both of their remaining games. So we should see a pretty desperate team tonight.

Oh absolutely........what do I want more? A meaningless best player in the league trophy? (Which I believe he is whether he wins or not anyways cause I love him) or the Flyers missing the playoffs, and getting to watch Ovy play in the playoffs? I'll take the Flyers miss every time.

I laugh whenever a Ranger fan brings up that 05 Calder trophy because they're like "If it wasn't for Lundqvist coming in at the same time as Crosby and Ovechkin, he would have won the Calder" Well we can say the same thing, Marty could have won one hart, and possibly two if Crosby and Ovechkin weren't in the league because it looks like he's going to lose it to both of them one year after another lol.

On another note, Washington-Pittsburgh 1st round match up? The Cros v.s Ovy? That's what the NHL wants.

I think Washington can take Pittsburgh though. It's funny isn't it? They jump from 8th to 3rd. We really need to win against Philly in regulation. I want them out, after all that talk of how improved they were and how Biron was going to win the Vezina after 10 games into the season, it would make me as happy as Luongo missing last night. What a goalie.

We can only hope our boys pull a big win out of there ***** against a desperate "bullies" team. If we can come away with a win and a clean bill of health, paint me happy.

It would be nice for results to go against Philly, we might even have "The War-room" on our side for tonights game. That is if the NHL wants to earn some money this offseason.

of course they are saying that. They were cocky even when we were on the streak from 98-01. Ask them about that...they'll tell you "Most of the games were ties" blah blah blah. Oh and of course they love to talk about 95. "It wasn't a full season, so it's not that big of a deal...blah blah blah"

I work with a Rangers fan who's son used to play with Marty's son. Marty always used to tell him before games against the Rangers, "Well, I'm off to beat your team." Here's hoping we do it Sunday and if we meet in the playoffs.

Ottawa is one team that is hot and cold right now. Its like a sleeping giant. They have very very good offense but lousy defense. It probably is better for our style this year to play them. Unlike last year, we have gotten bigger and our system has changed slightly. We're actually better matched up to Ottawa than the Rangers.

I think if we want to beat the Rangers, we are going have to change our system slightly. They know our playing style too well because of Gomez. We need to capitalize on their familiarity and use breakouts that is counter intuitive to what they are used to seeing with us.

A win tonight would be impressive with the Flyers playing for their lives. The Devils will have to hold on for the first 5 to 10 minutes and if they do and stay out of the box, we have a shot. I would be happy with a point, but I like Philly to win tonight, unless they come out and play careless and out of control hockey.

Amen to that F the Flyers and Rangers. We should focus on the task at hand and beat the Flyers and sink them. I donīt care if we face the Rangers in the 1st round. Actually, it will be great! I don't mind playing the Rangers. My worry his that they have a great PK and we don't as of late and our PP is nothing to write home about, while their's seem to have woken up. Actually, that's a concern for any match up the Devils have.

Elias needs to neutralize Gomez on his breakouts. I wouldn't say match 'em line for line, but I think Elias is the best match for Gomez. He's a better all around player. I remember Gomez tried his little end to end in the last game and Elias was all over him, not fooled whatsoever

it's a good idea since they played together and still have some of that "I know where he is" mentality.

I don't mind playing the Rangers. My worry his that they have a great PK and we don't as of late and our PP is nothing to write home about, while their's seem to have woken up. Actually, that's a concern for any match up the Devils have.

The good thing is, their PP sucks too.

Breaking them down with size is one strategy, though I think they match us for size so its really not that great of an advantage.

We really just need to change the location of our breakout to capitalize on their familiarity. For example... We always have a headman positioned halfway up just past the side boards of the neutral zone. Instead of going up straight why not change it so our guys pass cross ice instead? You notice when they play us, they put their guys right there on the side to anticipate our passes, theres nobody in the middle.

Or we could just have Martin, Oduya or Elias carry it all the way up the ice Gomez style. I know they can do it.

If Cablevision puts the islanders feed on MSG Plus and bounces us over to the overflow channel it would be yet another disgrace by Cablevision.
The Isles-Rags game is already on MSG with the Raggies feed.

Philly's season is on the line tonight. They should be pumped big time and very desperate. The Devs must be ready to play from the opening faceoff to have a chance. If they withstand the first 10-12 minutes and play smart hockey it could be a good night.

Good news, the game tonight is on MSG+.

Earlier in the week, the Star Ledger said that the game was going to be on the overflow, which I was absolutely incensed about, but it looks like the folks at MSG decided to wise up and give us the game. I wouldn't have been able to watch it tonight if it was on the overflow.

off topic here but really funny. Me and my friend were coming up with gary bettman jokes on why nhl ratings were low and how bettman has killed the game and put it on such channels as outdoor life network even though the game is not played out doors. So we came up with possiblities on how gary bettman will decide to change the game next.

Gary Bettman: "What do the words, Oh My God, you killed Kenny, mean to you guys?" NHL Guy: "Ken Daneyko was killed?" NHL Guy 2: "No, idiot, he was on MSG Plus the other night. Obviously Kenny Jonsson was." Gary Bettman: "No morons! It's a line from South Park. What's important about South Park?" NHL Guy: "Ooooh, we're trying to get more Jewish players." NHL Guy 2: "We need more token black players?" Gary Bettman: "NO! It shows that hockey in animation sells! The episode where Stan's team faced the Redwings had very high ratings. Now all we have to do is animate the real Redwings!" NHL Guy 1 and 2 at the same time: "Gary, you've done it again!"

NHL Guy: "Guys, we need a new way to attract viewers." Bettman: "What about giving the puck a glow?" NHL Guy 2 "Been there, done that." Gary Bettman: "What about adding a third team in Florida?" NHL Guy 1: "Probably not a good idea since no one goes to watch the Panthers and Lightning." Gary Bettman: "I got it! We have the games played as usual, and then using modern day technology, we animate them afterwards and have them shown on Cartoon Network! Fans do love cartoons, don't they?" NHL Guy 1 and 2 at same time: "Gary, you've done it again!"

We don't really NEED this win, but a 5 game streak going into the playoffs is what we do NEED. The Rangers game will probably be a preview of Round 1.

To be an optimist, we haven't beat them once, but every game has been close. It's not like we get run over every game.

1) Comcast blows.

2) Aside from the PK break 2-1; what do we have 3 shots on goal?

3) 6 turnovers at our own blue line.

4) No emotion... this is for home ice right?

5) We scored on ourselves... again.

6) Weak call on Asham but no call on the hold that twisted our guy to the ice behind our own net and let to a turnover and shot on goal? Refs at it again... (not to mention the hold on Elias in their zone when he was taken by 2 guys at once).

7) It can only get better at this point... unless the war room gets involved.
