On to nights Devils intermission show, Stan Fischler said the City of Newark will hold a press conference next week to announce plans for a hockey arena. The Maven also said an article will appear in the paper on Sunday.

Somebody explain to me why we had to wait for the Nets to leave town to get this done? Makes no sense.

Honestly, I don't care much for the Nets and I never have.
But maybe we'll be able to lure them back if Ratfuc...I mean...Ratner runs into too much red tape in Brooklyn.
It will be only semi-interesting to hear what Nets players and management has to say about this.

*It's not the idea that I really wanted to keep the Nets in New Jersey so much as I really wanted to keep them out of New York.

It would be better for the Devils to be the main tenant at an arena.

I also think it was a good bargaining tool when the Nets announced their intent to leave the state. The powers that be probably would be worried about losing a second sports team.

I had the Devils game on my TiVo but it all got deleted for the Simpsons, so I can't give an exact account of what Stan Fischler and Matt Loughlin said. They did say something about an 18,000 seat arena.

Any good businessman in their right mind would have jumped all over the Nets threat to leave the state like sharks to chum. You just know Lou was seeing dollar signs the moment he read those proposal headlines. Its the perfect bargaining tool and couldn't have come at a better time.

I like the meadowlands.........The cup was there the first night and brought lots of magic with it..........I hope they are able to bring that magic to Newark..........But I fear the magic will get car-jacked on the way.

Provided this goes down like I think it will, I too will miss the Meadowlands.

I think the arena will have the desired amount of luxury suites, so the Devils' revenue will be up. I also think it will have a "hockey first" atmosphere, as opposed to Continental Arena (a.k.a. Brendan Byrne Arena; aka Meadowlands Arena.) I think the architecs used the all-purpose stadiums of the 1970's as their model.

But I fear the magic will get car-jacked on the way.
Newark has some really bad parts, but I think they will have the arena well secured.

I grew up in Paterson NJ, I know a lot about terrible inner-city conditions. I worked pretty hard to get out, I really don't want to have to go back. Even for the Devils.

Lou is chomping at the bit to have a one team arena where he has more pull in scheduling way more weekend Devils games without having to compete with the Nets for paying eyeballs.

I think one of the keys to this arena working is how much they are going to redevelop the area that's going to be around the arena, such as resturants and bars, the whole area has to have some kind of atmosphere. Because if it's just this fancy new arena in the middle of Newark and nothing else that might be a problem.
