EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=njd) look to head into the All-Star break with a fourth consecutive home win as they host the Vancouver Canucks (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=van) on Thursday night.

The Devils have won five of their last six games overall, including three in a row at Continental Airlines Arena.

On Tuesday, Jeff Friesen (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=1113) scored with 6:13 left in the third period to give the Devils a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators. Jamie Langenbrunner (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=1259), playing his third game since returning from knee surgery, set up the goal.

Patrik Elias (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=1389) scored New Jersey's other goal and has seven goals and two assists in his last nine games.

All-Star Martin Brodeur (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=686) made 23 saves against Ottawa to improve to 25-14-9. On Tuesday, Brian Rafalski (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=1911) was added to the Eastern Conference All-Star team to replace fellow Devils defenseman Scott Stevens, who is sidelined with a concussion. New Jersey's Scott Niedermayer (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=607) also was voted to start the All-Star Game.

The Canucks have lost consecutive one-goal decisions following a five-game winning streak and are 2-1-0-1 on their five-game road trip.

Daniel Sedin (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=2102) had a goal and two assists for Vancouver in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss to the New York Islanders (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=nyi). The Canucks allowed three straight goals before Henrik Sedin (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=2103) tied the score, 4-4, with 82 seconds left in the third period. Former Islander Trevor Linden (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=50) received a double-minor for high-sticking with 57 seconds to go in the third and Adrian Aucoin put a one-timer past goaltender Johan Hedberg (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?statsId=2656) 36 seconds into the extra session.

Hedberg had 23 saves as the Canucks dropped to 19-1 when owning a lead after 40 minutes.

The Canucks have won the last three meetings with the Devils, including two here.

Shots on goal in the 1st period were 7-6 in favor of NJ. The Canucks as a team are still reportedly upset over a recent article written about them somewhere. They were skating pretty aggressively for the entire 20 minutes.

Sounds like the Sedin's are having a good night. Any Devils fans with any impressions on them?

Morrison, before tonights game, said that he really wanted to proove (again, he had an OT winner against the Devils a few years ago) Lou Lammereillo was wrong in moving him. He might have been. Tonight, he certainly looks better than Gomez did, whom it was rumoured he could have been the guy being moved instead of Morrison.

The Devils aren't having a good night, but never fret Devs fans. Your team is built for the playoffs. The regular season for them is a mere formality ;)

Well after this debacle, and Philly next Tuesday, the Devils have 9 straight games against non- or borderline-playoff teams, there is no reason for them to lose ANY of those.

The aforementioned big news? The Maven said he's been told that the Newark Arena plans are moving ahead.

Ah. Well, an arena IS sort of important as that's where the games are played.

Note: I really do think the Devils should drop the Nickelodeon promotions. I don't see people in costumes of cartoon characters could possibly draw people to a hockey game, much less a flea market.

Sedin Twins Note: Before the game, I was scouring the Hockey News' midseason grades for the Canucks. They gave the Sedins a C (Daniel) and a C- (Henrik), both for not breaking out. Given that they have over 30 points each already and playing fairly well, I don't know if I want to see them breakout. It'd make the Canucks even MORE threatning. ;)

Rupp misses an empty net... and the follow through on the rebound is botched as well.

Sigh... This team needs a good kick in the pants. This is where this team misses a Stevens and Daneyko.

I thought that was Elias?

Now Gomez blows a 2-on-1. JUST SHOOT IF YOU CAN'T MAKE THE PASS!!!

Arrrrgh, this is like Detroit all over again.

Elias probably did as well. I was watching when Rupp was to the right of the net and he couldn't lift it over a down and out Cloutier. Turner Stevenson was out there with him and he had the same luck on the rebound.

2 men down now.

Vancouver has the Devils number this year same as last. Just one game against a non-division rival. Plenty of time to regroup after the All-Star break.

I don't know what these guys are thinking. Giving teams like Detroit and Vancouver PP (especially 2 man) opportunities is deadly.

I should have watched Smackdown! tonight. Smackdown! That's a pretty good assessment as to what the Devils got.

Any team that gets shut out by Cloutier should be banished from the league.

Hmmmmmmm ..... I really think you're an idiot(no offence) but you need to know cloutier is a good goalie the thing is the guy has no playoff expierence . If he did this guy would be one of the best in the league top 6 or 7 BAR-NONE ...

b) How many more playoff series does he have to lose before he has "experience"? He's a good goalie, but the team will have to carry him to the Stanley Cup, not the other way around.

Best thing that came out of this debacle was Fischler's announcement that the new 18,000-seat Devils arena in Newark looks good. I cannot frickin' wait. Goodbye can't come soon enough for the Continental Crud.

I'm from Sayreville, be hopping on the coastal train at South Amboy, same train you'll probably be on.

Sooooo what you are trying to tell me is that Cloutier cannot carry a team ... I guess your right . It was Anaheim in the first game who would have beat Vancouver you know "ANY" goealie could have made those saves , and I guess in the first game against L.A. vancouver would have won anyways because you know any goalie could have made those saves and keep their team in the game when their team couldn't get the puck out of their own zone for 2 periods ...

Like any goalie he has good games and bad in the regular season. However, he had the WORST GAA and save pct. of all the goalies in the playoffs last year...(btw his career playoff stats: 9-12, 0 SO, 3.43, .868) He may be a top ten goalie a few years down the road but he certainly isn't there yet.

Cloutier problem is not so much that he's a poor goaltender, but that he isn't a great one.

He is not a Brodeur, Roy, Belfour, Hasek, or even a Vernon or Ricther.

But he could potentially be an Osgood. In other words, good enough if the team is good enough.

You're right, Cloutier will not carry the Canucks on his shoulders into the SCF's. But he may be a key part of a group that gets there. That doesn't make him a great goaltender, but at the same time, that doesn't mean he's a terrible one either.

Good time for the break. I know this has been suggested previously, but I'll bring it up again. Niedermayer struggling with the "C". Tonight, he had the puck stolen from him by Henrik Sedin which led to the first goal, then Morrison completely undressed him on the PP. Actually, I thought Neids' defensive game had been starting to get inconsistent since before Stevens left. His offensive numbers are fine. But does anyone think he is slipping out of Norris contention?

The bright side. 58% on the dot.

New Jersey is 8-5-1 since Stevens has been away. Not too bad.

Forget Newark...that place is the a**hole of the state.

They should have picked a place like Howell, NJ where there's still plenty of open land to use, plus it has access to I-195, the GS Parkway and Route 9. :D

Moreover, we could get to the game in less than 15 minutes.

Please tell me you're joking. Howell is not exactly the mecca of New Jersey, and all I know is that during the week, when half of Newark's suits are heading to Devils games to woo clients, I'm happy. The place won't look like a morgue, the aisles will be more than two fat-chick deep, and I won't have to eat my cold pretzel, my $6.76 beer, and my bag o' Caliente nachos on a freakin' garbage can.

Put the arena in Camden for all I care; just put in a new one. Continental is atrocious.
