The Rumor has been caught out of Kitchener,Ontario

The Rumor is that Kitchener Head Coach Pete Deboer will leave after the memorial cup tournament is finished and help the Devils Next Season

Sutter Coached with Deboer at one world junior where they were amazing and came out with gold

only the best coming to new jersey

deboer has turned kitchener into a hockey city,

Every team he has, success is always there

Kitchener used to be a so/so team with a bad coach

Deboer comes to kitchener and turns everything around

im gotta pray that he stays in Kitchener but

their is a chance of him coming to New Jersey

Treat him well New Jersey

Would this mean Johnny Mac is the odd man out?

I love Johnny, but his offensive coaching isnt something to be desired...

This guy sounds very good from what ive read about him, and if hes coached with Sutter before, I guess that adds fuel to this fire.

I predict Johnny Mac moves into a scouting role or coach at Lowell if this is true. No way Lou cuts him out of the organization.

Is there some sort of story or link to this rumour? I mean, while I don't want to discredit you where you might get your info from, I just want to know if there's is a solid source about this in some kind of article.

I would be disappointed if Johnny Mac was the odd man out; although I think maybe a fresh coach with a different perspective might help our offense?

I am still wondering why MacLean is still an assistant with us. I have not been impressed with his coaching. Maybe it's because Lou had this guy in his back pocket but needed another year to bring him in after he got Sutter.

I feel bad for Johnny Mac, but he isn't cutting the mustard. Lou will keep him in the organization, no doubt.

Doboer could help with basically anything

he even got downie to claim down for 20 games

and that says a lot

Maybe Johnny Mac would do better in Lowell anyway. I agree with you, but I wouldn't mind having someone replace him.

I agree, Johnny Mac needs a change of scenery. Maybe he can help guys like Bergfors.

Excellent news for the Devils organization, Pete Deboer runs a high powered offensive attack with a great PP. He is exactly the type of coach that will help make New Jersey into a mutihtreat both offense and defense.

This may be a blessing for Halischuk, I don't think he is phyically strong enough but you never know.

I like the idea of having McLean be the head coach in Lowell....Deboer sounds like a possible intriguing addition to the coaching staff....Devils have had a fondness for drafting or signing Kitchener players lately (Clarkson, Halischuk and Fraser)

Or maybe Atlanta.

On the other hand, maybe not. Wasn't Robbie Ftorek looking for an NHL head coaching job too? And he's still with the Otters.

i think hed have a much better chance of being a head coach if he shows success at coaching...not to say were oozing offensive talent, but were not exactly lighting up the lamps either...if he were to have success in lowell hed find a few more suitors...

Sounds like Lou is going to give Johnny Mac a chance to coach over at Lowell & see how he does as a Head Coach. If he is succesful, that would make things easier for Lou when he steps down & Sutter replaces him as the GM.

Yeah, well why leave his cushy job in Kitchener until he gets a HC job.....If I were to guess, I would say that if/when Brent becomes the GM, then DeBoer would come here, but not before that.

TZajac19

Maybe a Job under Lou and Sutter is better then a HC job some where else. Keep in mind he comes into a team that has a history of winning odds are if he takes a HC job right away it would be on a bad team. Plus like Devilsfanatic said he could be our HC after Sutter takes over for Lou if that happens. Plus he has a history with Sutter.

We also have more of his former players then anyone else in the league.

I will tell you this if this hire comes and he becomes our Asst. then Lou's days are numbered because he is setting up his successors.

Edit: And Johnny Mac will become the head coach at Lowell i think. That will be great and with him in Lowell and Jacques Laperriere still floating around(I think) working with our kids. Then Sutter, Robinson, Albelin, Caron, and this new guy. Thats a lot of good coach's for the organization!

Well, a few fairly reliable sources have said that Sutter demanded a GM/HC position from teams trying to lure him away from his cushy position in Red Deer. But that didn't turn out to be true. I honestly think that what Lou lacks in terms of being a player on the FA market, he makes up for by getting some of the greatest minds in hockey to help him run his team. Some pretty big names have been involved with the Devils in some kind of coaching/scouting/hockey operations role over the years. It wouldn't surprise me if Lou could snatch DeBoer from Kitchener and make him an assistant.

Well maybe he did get that GM/HC position in a wink-wink, nudge-nudge, agreement with Lou.

Thats a stretch isnt it???

I know hes not the happiest looking guy, but hes a true professional, im sure he loves his job. The thing about missing his family is that, its human nature, of course hes going to miss his family, but it was just something he said in an interview on tv.

Sutter is going to be around for a long time.

I recall reading that he signed a four year deal, but I can't find any sources right now to back that up. I still think our next GM is behind the bench right now. It makes you think Pat Burns won't be coming back, at least not with us.

We can only hope!! This DeBoer sounds like a great coach too, so one would hope this rumour has a certain amount of steam behind it.

If Sutter can get this team to play like they are next season, only better, with a years worth of experience with this system, and this DeBoer guy can put together an at least acceptable powerplay, we could do some damage.

I still think next year is going to be the year we really go for it.

Well, four years sound good to me. I was worried he only signed for two. Thanks.

I don't know the particulars of the situation, but because DeBoer doesn't have any NHL experience, or professional coaching experience (he's only coached OHL), he might want/need a year or more in that environment.

One note, looking at his hockeydb's profile...he must be close to Paul Maurice (I was thinking about young coaches)...they were teammates for 3 years on the Windsor Spitfires in the mid-80's. They were both drafted in the 12th round, 3 years apart. DeBoer got his first coaching job with the Detroit Jr. Red Wings as an assistant under Paul Maurice. In 95-96 Maurice went to the Hartford Whalers, DeBoer became head coach of the Detroit Whalers (who became the Plymouth Whalers).

Sutter is awesome.

As for missing his family, I'm sure he does. But he's already said that he's gotten used to it. When his wife, mother and daughter visited him recently, he said that he's gotten used to living alone. I think that if it were that big a concern for him, he would not have taken the job.

If this rumor is true - I'm thinking that's way things will go down. Lou can even stay on as president, Sutter as GM and DeBoer can eventually become head coach. If DeBoer does take this job, at the very least he wants to jump in and get some seasoning before going for an NHL coaching job. And I think it would be good for Johnny Mac to go to Lowell and do some actual head coaching and prove that he has earned the job. For all the knock he is getting on his offensive coaching - we basically have three goal scoring wingers, two are on the smaller side, and one natural center up front, its not a lot to work with.

How can you not be impressed with his coaching. First of all, he is an assistant, who merely carries out what philosophy the club dictates. He is a team player.
And no one here has mentioned larry leaving his position as asst?? why not. Do you really think he's been "sick" this long with a sinus infection?? Atleast give him (Maclean) credit for learning something from lou, larry and sutter. He is their student. Sick of his coaching? whatever tool.
