Unable to deal several high-priced veterans at the trading deadline, this appeared to be a lost season for the Toronto Maple Leafs in more ways than one.A recent resurgence, however, has put the team's focus back on making the playoffs.

The Maple Leafs look to avenge their only regulation loss in the last seven games on Saturday night when they face the Eastern Conference-leading New Jersey Devils at Air Canada Centre. With apparently too much ground to make up in the East, Toronto (30-29-10) figured to one of the most active teams at the Feb. 26 deadline.

Partly because several of their veterans have no-trade clauses and expensive contracts, the Leafs made no major moves to help a team in danger of missing the playoffs in three straight years for the first time since 1925-28. Toronto, though, won four of five leading up to the deadline, and is 3-1-1 in five contests since. That surge has moved the Leafs up to 12th in the East and within six points of Philadelphia for the final playoff spot.

Bryan McCabe had a goal and an assist during a four-goal second period Thursday as Toronto coasted to an 8-2 rout of Boston.
Nik Antropov had two goals and captain Mats Sundin added a goal and two assists for the Leafs, who are 5-1-1 in their last seven games, with the only regulation loss coming 4-1 at New Jersey on Tuesday.

"I think it's something all of us believed in clearly," left wing Alex Steen said. "We've certainly kept the faith and believed we can make the playoffs. The last five weeks or so we've played pretty solid hockey."

A potent power play has been key for Toronto, which is 9-for-21 with the man advantage in the past six games.
Sundin has been at the forefront of the resurgence, tallying six goals and seven assists during a season high-tying seven-game point streak.

"We've got to win those games against the teams we're trying to catch," Leafs coach Paul Maurice said.
Beating the Devils (39-23-6), though, has proven difficult for Maurice's team, which has lost all three meetings this season, scoring only five goals.

Martin Brodeur has started those three games for New Jersey, posting a 1.67 goals-against average. John Madden and Zach Parise each have team highs of three goals and four points for the Devils in the season series. Patrik Elias scored 4:02 into overtime, lifting New Jersey to a 2-1 victory over visiting Tampa Bay on Friday. It was Elias' eighth winning goal of the season, his Devils-record 60th, and his 14th in overtime - a franchise mark.

"We're getting the wins, and that's the bottom line," Elias said.
Elias also assisted on Parise's team-leading 28th goal as the Devils jumped over idle Montreal and Pittsburgh to reclaim the top spot in the East for the first time since Feb. 29.

"Let's face it, it's a playoff race now," Parise said. "It's been for the last 10 games. It's going to be like this the rest of the season." New Jersey, which is 11-3-3 in its last 17 games, has allowed two goals or fewer in nine of its last 10 contests. The Devils have surrendered an Eastern Conference-low 159 goals.

Already missing Paul Martin (foot), the Devils could also be without fellow defenseman Colin White on Saturday. White was injured in the second period Friday when he was hit by Lightning forward Junior Lessard.

Does anyone know whats the deal with the two middle sections of the ACC being completely empty for parts of the game? Do they have a lounge/bar like our club seat holders do? I know the fans are there, its the Leafs for christ sake
If they do, it must have some good stuff, because for some reason the center sections would be completely vacant for 5-8 minutes at a time. and the surrounding sections completely full.

Well, the Devils have to play much better then last night if they want to win this game. Their passing was horrible and as we all know, need to score more than 2 goals. No Weekes?

This will be another desperate effort from the Leafs. They played well the last time we faced them, but they ran into a hot Marty Brodeur. The Devils will have to be a lot better than they were then and than they were last night.

I agree with adding Clarkson over Rupp. Mike plays hard but has hands of stone. They looked more like a 4th line. Anyone else impressed with Salvador and Rachunek? They both played a strong game. And Elias who was the star of game, needs to stop with those cute little drop passes at the blue line.

I've sat in that area once... there's little boxes underneath full of any food you could possibly want and there's a little TV so you don't miss any action... I remember missing the first 5 minutes or so of one period cause I was too busy downing shrimp and a haagan-dazs bar haha

So yeah...

Devils have the power to shut out our playoff dreams pretty badly tonight... not sure what my feelings about that are personally... haha, I just want an exciting game.

Are you talking about like the platinum and gold level seating that you can see when you're at centre ice? Usually suits fill those seats up and don't give a damn about the game, only there to entertain clients if that is what you're referring to. It's a disgrace actually. I know up in the 200 levels where there are actual suites and stuff, they have this restaurant but usually you can't see that area on TV.

Anyway I usually really hate your team minus Brodeur but given the current situation of my own team, Go Devils Go, I'd rather have a higher draft pick than a 9th place finish so win!

I do think though because of desperation and the way the Leafs have played on HNIC lately that we will steal this one! With that said I don't think we will get in the playoffs, nor get a top 5 lottery pick.

2:nd best in the Conference? I'm sorry, but no. Toskala is a good goalie, but he still has Lundqvist, Vokoun and Miller ahead of him in the East.

I think Toskala will be a top 3 goaltender in the next year or two, but not right now. He's got tremendous skill - but has yet to refine them to the point needed to be consistent (plus a solid defense corps in front of him might help too).

The Leafs would be last in the conference if it wasn't for Sundin and Toskala. However I think it's more a lack of Raycroft in goal than Toskala's great play that has kept the Leafs anywhere near a playoff spot. He's maybe in the top 3-4 in the conference.

Devils defenseman Colin White did not make the trip to Toronto for tonight's game against the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre because of the upper body injury he sustained in the second period of Friday's 2-1 overtime win over Tampa Bay.

"After communicating with him and the training and the doctors, the decision was made to leave him at home," Devils coach Brent Sutter said. "It's fine. We have nine defensemen and that's why we have them."

We are the kings of upper body soreness injuries.

He's extremely close to equaling last season's stats. How many goals/points total do we think he can get with 13 games left? Seems to be on fire lately!I think he can average a point per game the rest of the way. Which would say a lot with the toughness of our remaining schedule.

Only two things I want for the 2nd peirod. Devils to come out strong/score and for the refs to have good period lol..........Going out on limb for number 2. Is it to much to ask for one set of ref's one game to have an outstanding game.

Zach is just too cool. Way more camera friendly than Sidney too.

Good 2nd period for us, much better than the 1st even though we didn't score. Rachunek and Salvador have impressed me again tonight, along with Oduya who has been sharp in our end. Elias, Gio, Parise, Madden and Langenbrunner have been our only O-men that have been very noticeable. Zajac and Zubrus haven't done much, although I do recall a few consecutive shifts where Zubrus made very good plays along the boards. We're clogging the ice really well and keeping the Leafs unsettled with our counters. They've haven't been able to figure out how to create scoring chances against us ever since the flurry of posts in the first.
