Brooklyndevil 03-06-2008, 05:25 PM McGuire was on this afternoon and said he likes either Pittsburgh or the Rangers to make it to the finals, however, only to lose to the Ducks. I can agree to a degree. And my reasons are goaltending. If Lundqvist plays like he has thus far in the playoffs, the Rangers are in trouble and Conklin or Fleury have to prove themselves under pressure. He also stated, which I also disagree with, minus the Ducks, that the Sharks, Wings, Wild and even the Avs are better than any team in the East. That's a pretty bold statement. God, how I would love to play the Avs in another final, but I don't see it happening. Ducks repeat.
ALso, not sure if Lou stepped on his dog, but when Russo asked him about the Devils, he didn't have much to say. He talked about the Rags, Isles, Sens and Pens, but hardly a sound bite about the Devils. Strange.

he did give sutter high praise though

He's been pissy about the Devils ever since he realized they had been giving out #27.
Being a super-genius MONSTER like Pierre, it only took him over two years to figure this out.
Maybe Zach's getting a little old and we don't have any other pedophile jailbait for this freak of nature.

jBuds 03-06-2008, 05:50 PM Mike and Mad Dog just referred to the Devils as the "Yankees of hockey" in terms of being consistent winners over the course of M&MD's radio tenure.
Pierre is ... questionable, at best.

That's him. He also works for TSN - Canada.
guyincognito 03-06-2008, 05:52 PM Pierre was the former coach of the Whalers and was run out of town in a big mutiny.
EDIT: Very brief story explaining McGuire's short tenure as coach of the Whalers.

I was a kid when this happened, but as I remember the story being told, the mutiny revolved around the bar fight and Pierre throwing vets under the bus. They thought of him as a joke.

It's just some filler-time in between college basketball, spring training baseball, the demise of the Knicks, golf & tennis.
Since the NYR have only a couple of thousand more fans than that of the Devils or NYI, they then have to appeal to them and hope a handful of their 18,200 strong fanbase is actually listening in at this time.
This is only the 2nd or 3rd time the NYR have been talked about in drive-time radio in New York since the Gomez/Drury signings last summer.
New Yorkers hate hockey and I'm sure many swithced the dial in droves to ESPN 1050 to hear Michael Kaye talk about the Yankees and Mets.
Devilswede 03-06-2008, 06:10 PM McGuire is a jerk and has no clue about hockey. He just thinks he does. I'm so tired of listening to that bum....

NJDevs26 03-06-2008, 06:49 PM I like the Wild but they sure haven't proven that they're on an elite level with those other teams. The Avs, I guess everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon because of the '01 reunion they're having there but odds are Forsberg'll be hurt for the playoffs anyway.
As far as Francesa and Russo, they do have great respect for Lou (though it would be nice if they'd deign to visit our new arena). But it is amusing to hear their lack of hockey knowledge. They were chuckling about Jason Blake having an off year after leaving the Isles, I guess someone forgot to tell them he's been fighting LEUKEMIA this year :shakehead

Mike and the Speech Impediment said they were thinking about making a trip out to the Rock around the time that it opened, but for a SETON HALL GAME. :shakehead Hopefully they make a trip out to the Rock sometime before the end of the year. I remember hearing that show. They were going over Seton Hall's schedule of opponents and wanted to visit the Rock sometime in early February right after the Super Bowl. Of course the Giants winning the Super Bowl changed things as that story took precedence over everything else in New York sports and dominated the airwaves over the next several weeks. They never did fit it into their schedule.
Even before they talked about going, Jeffrey Vanderbeek should have personally invited them to the arena and given them a tour of the facility and its access to public transportation. Mike & Chris like talking about things like that and I can only imagine them saying that the place is totally spectacular and the fact that downtown Newark wasn't nearly as bad as people were making it out to be.
Like you said, it was positive and free publicity on the most popular talk radio show in North America, but Vanderbeek totally missed the boat on this one.

I can see you're point, but VBK still has time to get them over to the Rock. Maybe if we meet up with the Rags or Isles in the playoffs, they can have a show or two over there. M&MD did have a show at CAA for Game 1 of the '06 playoffs if I recall.
But we definetly agree that with all the listeners that these guys get, them talking up the Rock can do wonders for us.

They were at Game 7 during the 2003 Cup Finals and to this day, Dog thinks the building was "dead". Yes, the CAA was known to be dead at times but the place was as electric as any oversized 19,040 Cup clinching arena can be.
They also said that any goalie could have been in net for the Devils and they still would have won 3 Stanley Cups. This opinion has however changed since then as even those two clowns have realized the talent, quality & significance of Martin Brodeur.
They are both typical arrogant New Yorkers (from Long Island) who having nothing but contempt for the state of New Jersey. They know nothing about the place, let alone about the Devils or the sport of hockey. Vandebeek has a golden oppurtnity and you'd think that since WFAN is the flagship station for the New Jersey Devils, they would have arranged for Mike & Chris to visit the place months ago.
ILikeItVeryMuch 03-06-2008, 09:00 PM Both Gary Thorne and Bill Clement have said numerous times that the noise and energy during Game 7 of the 2003 final was one of the best they have seen in years. But who are they to go against the NHL masters, Mike and the Mad Dog.
Its the whole NY ego "I cant even give NJ credit even though I probably vacation there" thing, sometimes it makes me embarrassed to be a Yankees fan.

Clement compliented Devils fans??? He was angry at Devil fans for booing Giguerre and took a few swipes at us during the ABC broadcast right after it happened.
New Yorkers criticize Jersey all the time yet I see their cars here all the time, whether to shop, dine, Atlantic City, the beaches, or visit for any reason. And I always get a kick out of wanna be "hipster" Park Slope Brooklynites who put down New Jersey, yet live in grafitti strewn, tumbledown ramshackle walk ups with garbage piling up on the street.
Not to mention half of Monmouth & Ocean County are former New Yorkers who bring their annoying accents, bad driving skills and poor social skills and manners with them. ;)

Both during and after, who remembers..... "This place is shaking right now, the upper level in the CAA in rocking back and forth, yeeeeowwww". And Clement talked on Home ICE XM 204 about his favorite Game 7s and he mentioned how the 2003 Game 7 had an excellent atmosphere.

I was under the impression they *were* invited, before and after the building officially opened.
I know Lou wanted to give them a private tour before opening.
The Korean* 03-06-2008, 09:23 PM Is it just me or does anyone else find it strange that anyone related to hockey will make an appearance on Mike and the Mad Dog show?
BenedictGomez 03-06-2008, 09:24 PM In regards to Mike and the Mad Dog, I think some here are missing the point, as it isn't that they hate hockey. The fact is their entire show is predicated on the fact that they are "sports experts", but the fact of the matter is that neither of them know very much at all about ice hockey. This becomes embarrasingly apparent during the brief and rare times when they do mention the sport. Thus the simple "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" solution is to just never talk about professional ice hockey on their "sports" show.

Lou has the personality of a wet sponge. He should be devoting his energy towards geting us a real #1 Center and #1 Defenseman this summer.

Is that what you meant by that? I had no idea. I wouldnt insult field hockey too much though. It predated "ice hockey" and is played by more people worldwide than "ice hockey" is. And effeminate is being a particular hockey team that waves at the crowd with their sticks after a win and being an NHLer who paints your fingernails black.

Dressing rooms are for department stores when trying on over priced clothes. Locker rooms are for athletics - where you actually have lockers to keep your gear and pull pranks on teammates.
