Marty shut down from getting a Shutout

Even though though the Devils have been winning alot lately, one thing that bothers me is that Marty hasn't had a shutout since Jan 4. Since it has only been a month or so, it doesn't seem like a big deal. The problem is that Marty has deserved about five shutouts since then but just came up short. It just seems like whenever the Devils have a good lead going into the third, like 2-0 or 3-0, they always seem to break down at some point and allow that one goal to ruin the shutout.

If you think back to last year, the third used to be the Devil's specialty especially when they were up. Think about how many one goal games we won last year. Personally I think it comes from our rookie (Greene, Mottau, Brookbank) / inept (Rachunek/Visnevski) defensive corp. They don't seem able to be mentally tough for the whole 60 minutes.

The Devils have won a lot of their games on puck control, not defense. This can explain the large amounts of goals I've seen from the Devils this year. When you play a puck control game, the defense is bound to breakdown.

No goalie EVER deserves a shutout. They earn it or they don't get, that's how it works.

That's the point, he did earn it in probably about 4 of the last five games. The defense was just bad. You obviously didn't watch those games, he EARNED it.

Marty definitely deserved one last night... He stopped 41 shots! For those of you who say but they were mostly to the outside, SOME of them were from the outside, but there were a few very dangerous shots that alot of goalies let through. Marty was on his game last night. The only one he let through was a rebound off the post.

I really thought last night was going to be a shutout, and it is very frustrating to lose them when Marty is on top of his game. I wish he would get at least another 3-4 before the season ends, but I think we will be lucky if he gets 1. The Buffalo game was a joke and should have been a shutout for sure.

That's my point though. Yes, I haven't watched full Devils games lately as I do to keep up with the teams that are rivals with the Flyers (damn you sinus infection), but think about how many other goalies are in the same spot of "deserving" more shutouts if it weren't for their defense. I can name 5 off the top of my head.

Every goalie has to work through their defense.

I was hoping that he would close in on the record this year because I think he only needs seven more to tie it. I guess we will have to wait to at least next year.

As stated a few months ago, it would be sweet if he could break both wins and shutouts records in the same game, preferably against the rags!

This has been bothering me a bit lately too…fortunately, Vancouver fans taught us last year that shutouts were a negative stat & just showed that a goaltender was inconsistent.

I disagree. Take last night for example. The Devils made a lot of needless passes and conceded possession to Toronto for much of the game. The Devils scored 3 of their 4 goals off a rush or a counter-attack as opposed to setting up in the zone and taking an open shot as Toronto was able to do.

As far as Marty not picking up as many shutouts, it's fine as long as the win is gained. Moreover, it's not as if Marty has a shutout going and the team lets up all the time to let Marty down. Look at last night's game again: Antropov scored on a rebound. Colin White was on him, but Antropov was in the right position as the puck bounced right in front. It's not as if the defense made a major error or they lost focus. Antropov was in the right place at the right time and there wasn't much Marty or the Devils could have done. It happens.

Things are actually very normal.

He's had 5 seasons of 6 shutouts or less and reached double digits in shutouts 4 times. I think we're a little spoiled from last year (12 shutouts) and 3 seasons ago (11 shutouts)

But like someone above said, Canucks fans lectured us last season that shutouts mean nothing. :sarcasm:

I was gonna make that point, but decided against it.
