Gunnar Stahl 30 03-05-2008, 12:46 AM sorry if this was mentioned but i was just watching NHL on the Fly and they showed an amazing stat
when scoring 2 goals or less we are 5-21-4
when scoring 3 goals or more we are 33-2-2:amazed:
that is incredible. they were saying how marty only needs a couple of goals for us to win
i mean its 3 goals!!!! that should be manageable to get every 2 out of 3 games

I was listening to the Leafs feed on the radio, and they said Marty had 300+ wins in his career that were 1 goal or less . That's a crazy stat.
Your stat bothers me a little bit because they're not winning low scoring games and they play a lower scoring system.

wow thats amazing.
yea it is a little disturbing knowing that we are 5-21-4 when scoring 2 or less goals and we are not known to score more than 2 goals too often. that is why its so important to get goals anyway we can
Mr.Krinkle 03-05-2008, 01:17 AM Stat of the night is really "Have the lead after 2 on the road, 24 straight wins" was what they flashed, now it's 25 straight.
That little tidbit courtesy of FSNY lost me 20 bucks because I flat out said "Any takers? 20 bucks we lose now because of the broadcast jinx?" Had a taker, but I gotta say, scoring 2 more in the 3rd was a nice way to lose 20 bucks and hopefully break that spell of "They've won __ games when _____ in the _____ by _______ over the ____________ when its a _____ moon and its ____ degrees or less" stat is busted out.
FelixPotvin 03-05-2008, 02:03 AM Great job by Brodeur tonight and that stat really goes to show why he's at the top. If your team is scoring, he wont be the guy to let everyone down. Consistantly outstanding.
fIREnIcE 03-05-2008, 02:22 AM Thats an effin KICK A$$ Stat....
thanks gunnar i would have never known that since cablevision cant decide if they want to include NHL network in my package of center ice or not ...some days i have it some days I dont....
kinda OT anybody have the same prob?

To a certain degree it's true of almost every team though, they won't win scoring 2 or less goals and usually do win scoring 3 or more unless they just have piss-poor D or goaltending.
At this point I'm almost surprised they scored 3+ goals in 37 of the 67 games, given how poor the offense has ranked this year, though I think the actual number is lower because team stats credit an additional 'goal' when you win a shootout. We've won a few shootouts after 2-2 games I think.
Devilswede 03-05-2008, 07:50 AM Which further proves that this team was/is in a big need of goal scoring. That should've been addressed, but it wasn't.

Seems like the NHL would offer the 1/2 hour On The Fly Final on their website each day if they were smart... or better yet on podcast.

I thought this was amazing too. But then I started to think this stat is similar for most teams. I don't think the stat is a reflection of how many goals you score, but an indication of how the game is going as a whole.
If the average goal per game NHL wide is ~2.7 (just a guess), you would assume that 3 goals should win most games, and 2 goals wouldn't.
DevilFisch 03-05-2008, 06:25 PM wow thats amazing.

Not quite. That stat proves the Devils score 3+ more goals in 37 games. The Devils have played 30 games where they scored less than 3. While it's not a gigantic difference, it's proof that the Devils score 3+ goals fairly regularly - 55% of the time so far this season. It also helps that the Devils have more wins with 3+ scored than total games with less than 3 scored. It's not super rad; but it's better than what the conventional wisdom says.

just shows if you give marty some goals he will shut down the other team.
NJDevs26 03-05-2008, 06:37 PM To add to that stat two of the four losses (with 3+ goals) were with Weekes in net - both 4-3 decisions against the Isles and Boston.
The only two with Marty included the one shootout loss to Atlanta and the 3-1 blown lead against Montreal.

55% isnt too often. thats only alittle over half of our games. teams like detroit and ottawa score over 3 goals a game on average. imagine if we could score 3 goals just 2 out of 3 (66% of the time) games. unlike ottawa we can keep the puck out of the net 3 times a game im going to guess 85% of the time.

true but using your number 2.7 league wide goals per game, we onlyu give up about 2.2 or so. so if we could somehow manage to score that 2.7 per game and have a gaa of about 2.2 we would win quite often.
EDIT: the average goals per game is 5.59 divide that by 2 its 2.795, so you were close with your guess and we average giving up 2.34 a game and with marty in net we give up 2.15 a game so just to even be an average offense we would win alot more
BenedictGomez 03-05-2008, 09:22 PM To a certain degree it's true of almost every team though
Ding, ding, ding, ding. Correct answer.
This is actually a pretty obvious stat if you digest it. I'd throw it into same the category with "when scoring first" stat in Football and the "when leading after 7 innings" stat in Baseball. You hear those stats often on broadcasts of both of those sports and I typically roll my eyes. It's similar to a self-fulfilling prophecy.

that woudl be smart....but worse is that my provider cant make up its mind if its inclusive with CI or not
