Sutter standing pat for Leafs
Devils coach Brent Sutter said he will stick with the same lineup tonight against Toronto at Air Canada Centre as he used in Saturday's 2-1 loss in Montreal. Defenseman Paul Martin did not make the trip because of a lower body injury. Center Rod Pelley, who was called up from Lowell on Monday, and defensemen Vitaly Vishnevski and Andy Greene will be healthy scratches.
Martin Brodeur will start again in net.
Sutter was vague when asked about whether he would stay with the line combinations from Saturday night.
"We'll see," he said. "We'll probably start out the same way and we'll see how it goes from there."
Sutter said he liked the way Brian Gionta played with Jay Pandolfo and John Madden on Saturday, so I would bet on that line staying together tonight.
Preview (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&page=Preview&gameNumber=1001&season=20072008&gameType=2):
Brian Gionta has regained his scoring touch after a monthlong drought, but he's going to need some help to get the New Jersey Devils back atop the Eastern Conference. The Devils, struggling offensively, look to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season as they visit the surging Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. Gionta snapped New Jersey's scoreless streak at 133:23 with his second-period tally against Montreal on Saturday night, but the Devils (37-23-6) lost 2-1 and fell out of first in both the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division. The winger is the only Devils player to have scored in the last three games, recording two goals. The Devils have scored just four in their last four games, going 1-2-1.
"We're just having problems scoring goals and creating chances of late," New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur said.
The Devils have lost two straight in regulation following a 2-1 overtime loss to Carolina on Tuesday night, and are in danger of losing four straight for the first time since Oct. 18-27 (0-3-1). New Jersey is one point behind Atlantic Division-leading Pittsburgh and Montreal for the East's top seed. Brodeur continues to keep New Jersey in every game with his stellar play in net, allowing two goals or less in seven of his last eight games. He has started both games against the Maple Leafs (29-28-10) this season, going 2-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average.
But New Jersey will need somebody to help Gionta on offense. Gionta has five goals in his last 10 games after failing to score in his previous 13. Gionta, however, has not tallied a point in either win over Toronto. Devils winger Zach Parise, who leads the team with 25 goals and 55 points, has been held off the scoresheet in each of his last four games after scoring a goal in the previous five contests. Parise has a goal and an assist this season against Toronto.
Toronto is tied for 11th in the East, but playing like a team that could play the role of spoiler down the stretch. The Maple Leafs are 6-1-1 since losing two straight in regulation.
"I think it's been really exciting the last month or so," Toronto center Mats Sundin said. "Right now, we have a good mix, we have a good chemistry and we're playing a good system that fits us as a team."
Sundin's outstanding play has sparked the Maple Leafs. The veteran center has five goals and nine points in his last five games, including a goal and two assists in Toronto's 3-2 win over Washington on Saturday. Toronto coach Paul Maurice said Sundin has played well all season, but he's had an extra burst lately.
"Don't underestimate some confidence," Maurice said. "Even in the great players, when they feel hot, when that stick gets hot, all of a sudden things start to go for them, they start to get some breaks."
The teams will conclude their season series Saturday, when the Maple Leafs will again host the Devils.
Alright, let's see if there's any magic left in my GDT's... Let's Go Devils!
feerlessleadr 03-04-2008, 12:31 AM awesome job as usual rg
Hopefully the devils can pull out of this scoring funk they have been in and beatup on the leafs tonight.
Wish I didn't have class so I could watch this one
daveskirtun 03-04-2008, 02:27 AM Very nice job. Hope we can win this one
britdevil 03-04-2008, 04:12 AM Hope we win, just so the whining on this board can be supressed for a couple of days!!!
JOKEZZZZ...
Anyway, I think we will come out strong, but Toronto seem desperate for that 9th spot again. Dangerous game as Mats has been playing out his mind lately. Lets hope Maddolfo are on tonight!!
NaChOs 03-04-2008, 04:15 AM ill be at the acc tonight sec 317 :D
and saturday night too! can'tw ait.
Devilswede 03-04-2008, 07:16 AM These lines just can't get the jobe done IMO:
Parise-Elias-Langenbrunner (The only potent line)
Brylin-Zajac-Clarkson (C'mon..w-t-f?)
Pandolfo-Madden-Gionta (Could do it)
Zubrus-Rupp-Asham (???)
I'm just hoping for a win. Just get it done! I don't care how..just WIN!
GO DEVILS!
britdevil 03-04-2008, 07:31 AM Parise-Elias-Langenbrunner (The only potent line)
Brylin-Zajac-Clarkson (C'mon..w-t-f?)
Pandolfo-Madden-Gionta (Could do it)
Zubrus-Rupp-Asham (???)
That 2nd line is horrid. The 1st and 3rd lines will carry us tonight, if that is the lineup anyway.
The Cuban 03-04-2008, 07:35 AM Awesome GDT, Richer!
A win would be nice. Maddolfo shutting down Captain Mats. :)
Go Devils!
DevilsFan38 03-04-2008, 07:35 AM This isn't quite a must-win game, but it's pretty close. Devils need to snap out of this funk and take advantage of playing some of the worst teams in the East this week.
Devilswede 03-04-2008, 07:42 AM This isn't quite a must-win game, but it's pretty close. Devils need to snap out of this funk and take advantage of playing some of the worst teams in the East this week.
Toronto might be lower than us in the standings, but they are playing much better than the Devils right now and they have 7 wins in their last 10 games. Mats Sundin is playing like a man possessed and they've gotten solid goaltending from Toskala. I'm really concerned about tonight's game...hopefully the Devils will find a way to win.
Cry_Wolf 03-04-2008, 07:52 AM Definitely need to get their ***** in gear and start getting some more shots on goal and goals in paticular. I don't care how they get them, just light that lamp dammit!!
I'm going not going to make any predictions, I'll just leave it for them to decide if they want to show up tonight.
:devdance:LETS GO DEVILS!!:devdance:
Great GDT once again, and hopefully that luck continues or I'll start making those GDTs. :P
britdevil 03-04-2008, 07:56 AM Great GDT once again, and hopefully that luck continues or I'll start making those GDTs. :P
Three game loosing streak = your GDT's obviously!!! ;)
I done one not so long ago, but it was a poor game, and the boards crashed. Needless to say, I havent made one since.
Alcoolique 03-04-2008, 08:28 AM We gonna win this one to keep up with the Pens!
Brooklyndevil 03-04-2008, 09:05 AM This is an important game. They stop the slide tonight or this may snowball into something real ugly.
Devilswede 03-04-2008, 09:47 AM We need to win this one, or else we could find ourselves scrambling for a playoff spot soon. Just look at the standings and how close it is..it's ridiculous! The Devils simply cannot afford to lose another one, 4 losses in a row at this stage would be embarrasing and devastating.
Mr.Krinkle 03-04-2008, 10:28 AM We better score more than 1 *** goal.
JimEIV 03-04-2008, 10:43 AM This isn't quite a must-win game, but it's pretty close. Devils need to snap out of this funk and take advantage of playing some of the worst teams in the East this week.
I agree
Pretty Close to MUST WIN.
The next 4 out of 5 (Including this one) are on the Road and this stretch is going to be critical - because the next bunch of games, after this bunch are ALL divisional games.
Games like Toronto and Tampa are the ones we're supposed to win.
Mar 4 at Toronto 7:30 pm
Mar 7 Tampa Bay 7:00 pm
Mar 8 at Toronto 7:00 pm
Mar 11 at Montreal 7:30 pm
Mar 13 at Minnesota 8:00 pm
MoonDragn 03-04-2008, 10:44 AM at least if we win this one, we'll be right back on top of the conference. We're 1 game behind both Ottawa and Pittsburgh so we're not in too bad of a shape.
frehley 03-04-2008, 10:50 AM I must-win tonight, but the Leafs have been playing really well lately. They need this win just as badly if not more than the Devils. 80% of their fans want them to lose the games in fear of 9th spot again, but the players are still very much interested in making the playoffs. I don't think we'll see many goals tonight, so let's put the puck behind Toskala when we get the chance, mkay?
Buzz Killington 03-04-2008, 10:52 AM A heads-up on the defense pairings per Colin Stephenson in the Star-Ledger: Notes: Defenseman Paul Martin, who missed Saturday's game with what was officially described as "general soreness," did not practice and did not make the trip to Toronto. Sutter said if Martin could not play, he would go with the same six defensemen he used Saturday, meaning Sheldon Brookbank and Karel Rachunek will be back in, and Vitaly Vishnevski and Andy Greene will be the scratches. ... F Rod Pelley was recalled from AHL Lowell.
DevilBesideYou 03-04-2008, 10:54 AM Stephenson in the Ledger (http://www.nj.com/devils/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1204609522225620.xml&coll=1) today had some info:
Sutter said he didn't know whether he would keep the new lines together for tonight's game. At yesterday's practice he restored the Zach Parise-Patrik Elias-Jamie Langenbrunner trio, but he left Gionta on the checking unit with John Madden and Jay Pandolfo and left Dainius Zubrus on the fourth line with Mike Rupp and Arron Asham. Sergei Brylin, who'd taken Parise's place with Elias and Langenbrunner Saturday, was working with Travis Zajac and David Clarkson.
Also, Sutter will be going with the same 6 dmen as last game if Martin can't play. Nice to see Rachunek getting some playing time.
The Habs had an embarrassing game yesterday, so it's a good opportunity for us to get right back in. I'm getting killed in my fantasy match up right now, so a big win tonight would be great.

A small OT tidbit. Stephenson got lost in the Prudential Center friday night down on the event level and never found the Devils locker room. Although I think it was his first time in the building and it can be a bit confusing at first (the first time I went I accidentally went down to the Penguins locker room), I remember him arguing...nah, not quite arguing, more like having an animated discussion with Tom Gulitti about how to get to the Devils locker room before Sutter's press conference...you know, as if TG could have actually been wrong about that:sarcasm:

I wonder why he wrote the article today, though. I guess Chere must still be sick.
Jason MacIsaac 03-04-2008, 01:39 PM Meh, I wouldn't mind seeing us drop to 6th in the east. That way we would face Carolina in the first round and possible get a top 20 pick in the draft.
Clarkson Falls Down 03-04-2008, 01:40 PM The Zajac line sounds brutal and more like a fourth line.
That's because it is. Those 3 have been our least productive offensive players for a while so I consider them my 4th line.

Niedermayer21 03-04-2008, 02:22 PM Great job!!! Sorry I have not commented before, but much appreciated!
Without Paul Martin, this will be a tough game to win. WTHeck is "general soreness?" I woke up sore this morning. If this were the playoffs, would Martin play?
Time to play Weekes tonight. Pleeeeeeeeeeze, give Marty a rest!!!!!!!!!!
And why call up Pelley unless he is going to play? Call up Vrana already and see what he can do. Call up Bergfors, since everyone who posts here is so high on him, and play him with Elias and Clarkson or Langenbrunner.
I know Tallackson is a bum, but he is scoring at Lowell. Call him up for a game or two and see if he can throw his big body around and maybe get a goal. He is an UFA and is playing for a new contract. That is plenty of incentive IMO.
Janssen25 03-04-2008, 02:56 PM Devils start a winning streak tonight. 4 straight, minimum.
Elias to Parise 03-04-2008, 03:09 PM I really don't like that second line. Can't we just go back to those lines we had prior to this mini slump?
njdevsfn95 03-04-2008, 03:54 PM if we lose this game im offically calling the nj devils the "2007 ny mets no way they choke away a playoff spot and divison title team"
with Pittsburgh being on our tail so much....we may lose it, but "choke" would be too harsh.
when we won it in 05-06...we were 19pts out.
no comparisons right now.

subject Al Trautwig insulting Devils fans on tonights broadcast
mailed-by gmail.com
Good evening,
I am writing to inform you of Al Trautwig's insult aimed at Devils fans on tonights pregame, Hockey Night Live on 3/4/08.
Right before the break where they brought in Dano Al intimated that the Devils have no fans.
I am a loyal Devils fan for many years and I do not tune into these broadcast to hear my favorite teams fanbase assailed.
I urge you to review his comments and take appropriate action to ensure this sort of nonsense does not happen in the future.
Thank you for your time,
You put in more words than I did.
DevilsFan38 03-04-2008, 08:03 PM Devils take a penalty.
BrodeurRULES 03-04-2008, 08:03 PM bah no commercial show the dam replay
Devilsfanatic 03-04-2008, 08:03 PM Bryce made a great play there or the Leafs may have scored a goal.
Dialamo 03-04-2008, 08:04 PM Oh well, that was a good penalty to take.
scalan15 03-04-2008, 08:04 PM I missed the pre-game show, can't stand Stan and Al anyway, was busy playing Frontlines:Fuel of War. What did Al Trautwig say exactly? what did he say about Devil fans?
Devilswede 03-04-2008, 08:04 PM And now a penalty to Salvador.......

Be fair, if you're going to take a penalty, that's a very good one to take.
Devilsfanatic 03-04-2008, 08:05 PM Salvador :shakehead That's a no no in New Jersey...play the man!
Dude, Blake was flying towards the puck after Marty let a huge rebound go, that was Bryce's only play. It was worth it, and hopefully we kill it off, because that's a penalty that was a goal saver.
BrodeurRULES 03-04-2008, 08:05 PM And now a penalty to Salvador.......

It was good penalty to take. hey would u rather they scored that goal? I would rather take penalty since our PK is great.

"we'll have messages for Dano from Devils fans, if there are any"
Pretty much saying that the Devils have no fans.
DevilDog 03-04-2008, 08:09 PM Be fair, if you're going to take a penalty, that's a very good one to take.
Truth.

Ya but how many had a shot to go in? I would say 5-6 and number shots mean nothing if they dont go in just ask the fishsticks lol
Clarkson Falls Down 03-04-2008, 08:14 PM THis team still isn't putting 2 passes together.
Cry_Wolf 03-04-2008, 08:19 PM Nice goal by Parise, but Devils needs more pressure; like Chico was saying they can't keep being the team that has to recover the puck, they have to be the team owning the puck.
Hopefully this happens in the second. Line combos seem to working alright so far. Whenever Madden and Pando are on the ice, it seems like Gio really disappears from the team. I don't know if I really like that line. I'd rather have Clarkson there since he was really learning alot from them earlier in the season.

this team lacks good players. and they lack any forecheck whatsoever. if you are going to be a grind em out team does that not require an aggressive forecheck?
the past five games should have come before the trade deadline and they would have thought harder about acquiring a center on this team.
instead they sit with nine defenseman 5 of which are watching over their shoulder every night trying not to make mistakes so they won't get benched.
this team cannot compete in the playoffs in my opinion. the games in which the other teams play desperate style ie: playoff style the devils really have no chance
we have a lifetime winger playing 1st line center (elias) we have a work in progress who looks as though 3rd or 4th line center will be his limit playing second line center (zajac) and we have our best checking center now taking the role of second line center (madden)
and our big off season 6 year deal signing is playing about 6 minutes tonight (zubrus)
clarkson isn't that good; zajac is in a rut and is not improving, we traded for colin white duplicate who can't get out of his own way (salvador)
and we have had 5 scoring chances in the last 5 games. i am not encouraged. and broduer is on pace to play 3,456 games this year.

DevilFisch 03-04-2008, 09:20 PM Save for the last 3-4 minutes of the second, the Devils have gotten better as the game has gone on.
I would like to point out that the Devils really need to listen to Chico - wait, hear me out, first - and focus on getting shots low. Both Toronto and New Jersey scored off rebounds and while Brodeur has displayed some excellent rebound control (the one that led to the goal was, what, the first or second of the game), I don't think Toskala would be as proficient.
I would like to see the Devils be more aggressive and spend more time with the puck rather than dumping it in. I think if they keep their heads straight and do that, they'll be fine.

I may go make a notebook saving all the quotes I read in a gameday thread
the ship is certainly not sinking this team really has done more this season than it should have.
but being a realist i think the scoring woes this team faces will haunt them once again this post season.
i think they will be better off finishing in the lower half of the playoff bracket and fill in the underdog role.
but realistically the last 5 games have shown this teams glaring weakness
inability to create offensive chances
little ability to sustain a forecheck
most nights; very poor breakout passes
and generally being outplayed and without puck possesion
they have definately shown flashes this season that they can play great, but i think we are one injury away from being a completely inept offensive team.
Dialamo 03-04-2008, 09:21 PM this team lacks good players. and they lack any forecheck whatsoever. if you are going to be a grind em out team does that not require an aggressive forecheck?
the past five games should have come before the trade deadline and they would have thought harder about acquiring a center on this team.
instead they sit with nine defenseman 5 of which are watching over their shoulder every night trying not to make mistakes so they won't get benched.
this team cannot compete in the playoffs in my opinion. the games in which the other teams play desperate style ie: playoff style the devils really have no chance
we have a lifetime winger playing 1st line center (elias) we have a work in progress who looks as though 3rd or 4th line center will be his limit playing second line center (zajac) and we have our best checking center now taking the role of second line center (madden)
and our big off season 6 year deal signing is playing about 6 minutes tonight (zubrus)
clarkson isn't that good; zajac is in a rut and is not improving, we traded for colin white duplicate who can't get out of his own way (salvador)
and we have had 5 scoring chances in the last 5 games. i am not encouraged. and broduer is on pace to play 3,456 games this year.
We needed a center, may god have mercy on lou's sole. go devils.
My god, you guys are really starting to freak me out!
captainscott 03-04-2008, 09:21 PM That's bad?
