scalan15 03-02-2008, 11:42 PM I was just reading about this draft on Wikipedia, I didn't know that the Devils traded their 1st Round draft pick with Vladimir Malakhov to the Sharks for Alexander Korolyuk and Jim Fahey.
I remembered Lou doing this so that the Devils could open up their salary cap, but to give them a 1st round pick? It's not like the sharks owed Malakhov his salary since he retired. what happened with Korolyuk? Do the Devils still have the rights to him? He's leading his team in scoring for Chekhov Vityaz. He could probably help the Devils Offense, LOL. Fahey was a dud. I could have understood a second round pick, but I guess Lou does not have many friends around the league that could have helped him out for cheaper. I think Overall, the whole Malakhov signing is one of the biggest mistakes Lou has ever made, since it cost us a 1st round pick, who by the way was traded to St. Louis, they selected David Perron who is having a pretty good rookie year with them. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

why would any team in the nhl help out another team unless they get benifits, so lou had to give his 1st so the sharks would want to absorb the cap hit, Korolyuk wont ever play for the devils, and yes it was a bad mistake but at least he knows now not to ever do that again, i wouldnt have minded nick petrecki (sp) on the devils blue line either.
Corrente-Petrecki (sp?) = :yo:
Darius Dangleaitis 03-02-2008, 11:57 PM Corrente-Petrecki would be nice. Petrecki hits anything that moves.
Das Uber 03-03-2008, 12:19 AM You people need to stop living in the past. Coulda shoulda woulda it doesn't matter know. Unless you're Hiro Nakamura and you can go back in time and tell Lou not to sign the 3 M's and to trade for Rob Niedermayer, S tfu. Plzkthnxbye.

IIRC, the Sharks tried to get Korolyuk to come back and were prepared to give a pick back to the Devils for him. Korolyuk decided not to.
I think our Korolyuk rights go bye-bye after this season and he goes UFA.

Not exactly. Korolyuk owes us exactly one season at the numbers decided on by the arbitrator following his last season in San Jose - assuming he ever comes back to the NHL. After that he'll be a UFA.
scalan15 03-03-2008, 12:39 AM Why doesn't this guy want to play in the NHL? Or does he not want to play for the Devils?
Niedermayer21 03-03-2008, 02:11 AM Korolyuk may be making some good money over in Russia. Much more than we could pay him. Let him stay in Russia. We don't need him.
Lou had to blow the first-round draft pick because he screwed up signing both Malakhov and Dan McGillis. Hey, no one is perfect. But we can't blow anymore first-rounders on guys like Ari Ahonen, J-F Damphousse, Adrian Foster, David Hale, Lance Ward, et. al. Can't complain about Zach Parise and Travis Zajac though. And who knows about Bergfors and Corrente. Too early to tell.
We really need Niedermayer, Stevens, Daneyko, and Claude Lemieux back. Like the way they were in 2000. But time marches on and no one plays forever, or for even a full season anymore. ;) I wonder if Stevens could still play? We are not that desperate, but it would be interesting. Dano looks too comfortable to play again. I think he enjoys hanging around the bar and wearing expensive suits. And he is a good analyst. I wonder if he has an "I Am Mr. Devil" T-shirt? LOL God only knows where Claude Lemieux is. And Niedermayer may take Anaheim to their second Cup in a row.
BTW, if Lou really wants to save money, he could trade Weekes in the off-season and dress Chico as Marty's backup. Chico could do the color commentary from the bench where he can actually see what is going on! :sarcasm: I love Chico. Only kidding!!!
I wonder what Neal Broten is doing these days? Anyone see Jan Ludvig lately? :D

Even when the puck is nowhere in sight. Petrecki is a dumb penalty machine.

I don't mind the move since it was completely salary cap related. At the time of trade, the 2007 Draft had the reputation of being quite poor. So while "1st round pick" always conjures up images of guys like Thornton, Iginla, Staal etc......the player was projected to be closer to a forgettable Ahonen/Foster type. Petrecki would have been a nice addition, but that's completely in hindsight.
In September '06 (or whenever the trade was made exactly), with Malakhov on the roster, you had to have traded Gomez or Gionta to fit under the cap. Both guys were coming off of career years, so you can't use the "Well we know we could survive Gomez and Gionta isn't going to match his production" card.
Lou f'd up with the 3M's....he did what he could. It was going to less than ideal either way. Anaheim found itself in a similar situation this year and traded Andy McDonald for Doug Weight. It was a shrewd move by St. Louis as McDonald is a proven NHLer and worth more to me than a first rounder in an iffy draft year. These things just happen when you paint yourself into a corner cap wise.
Jiri Bicek 03-03-2008, 03:36 PM Didn't we trade the rights to Korolyuk back to the Sharks after the trade?
Das Uber 03-03-2008, 03:38 PM Didn't we trade the rights to Korolyuk back to the Sharks after the trade?
The trade didn't go through.
Randal Graves 03-03-2008, 04:40 PM Could be worse.. we could have traded the 1st rounder for Tom Kurvers.
Devils9789 03-03-2008, 04:57 PM Didn't we trade the rights to Korolyuk back to the Sharks after the trade?
The trade didn't go though because Korolyuk didn't show up for his physical even though he agreed to come back.
