So the Devils' best offensive player plays less than 1/4 of the game, and we're supposed to wonder why, according to Marty, the Devils only produced 3-4 good scoring chances. Gionta played 14:54, Elias 15:56. Parise also played less than 15 mins last night. Seems like Sutter is reverting to Julien-ism....

That was as close to rolling four as I remember them doing in a long while. Zach and Gio don't kill penalties. There's pretty much the difference.

Parise played 15:44 last night...
NJD00 03-02-2008, 01:07 AM Parise played 15:44 last night...
a whopping minute...my bad. The point is, when your team is struggling to score goals, you play the heck out of your top guys, especially ones that played 15:44 the previous night!! . BTW, Elias, the Devs' second most dynamic player, played under 16 tonight and HE DOES play PK. Awful.

haha...if they make it....and Madden will be (20+ the past two nights), and won't be able to play effectively against Spezza, Crosby, Jagr, etc.
Clarkson Falls Down 03-02-2008, 01:57 AM That's what happens when Sutter totally jumble****s the lines up and puts Parise with Clarkson, who hasn't done anything in a month, and Zajac, who hasn't done anything in 2 weeks.
The penalties didn't help either. But Sutter HAS to put Parise back with Elias and Langs.

yea because madden plays the PK and hes out there whenever the top line is
Blitz113 03-02-2008, 11:25 AM I really have no idea what Clarkson has done in order to have been "promoted" to the 2nd line last night. And ****ing Brylin on the top line? :help:

I thought it was more about sending the lines a message. Same with Zubrus on the fourth line.
But what do I know. I have no idea what Sutter's thinking.
Brooklyndevil 03-02-2008, 12:43 PM I understand Parise maybe isn't getting the time he should be, but he hasn't exactly been the same player he was last season and recently hasn't produced much. He's been more streaky and inconsistent this season compared to last. He just doesn't look like the Parise I'm used to seeing. But than neither has Elias and Gionta and I thought we would get a better season out of Zajac, although the kid still plays responsible defense.

recently hasn't produced much? do you watch devils hockey? he just came off a 5 game goal scoring streak. and who knows how many assists he had in that run.

It's not being inconsistent or streaky, it's called playing forward for the New Jersey Devils.
The guy is the only one who can consistently score on our team nowadays, and its retarded to see him get shafted minutes-wise. We took alot of penalties last night, and he even took one himself, so that explains last night, but I've noticed this before.
When Brylin and Clarkson, god knows I love him, play more than our top six forwards, we aren't going to win. Period.
sattar18 03-02-2008, 04:18 PM IMO parise and elias should be playing at least 20 mins a night if you want to get see some goals.

Thus the word streaky! And I have more knowledge about the Devils & hockey than you probably have in your whole body.

He just doesn't seem to be as dangerous lately has he normally is. I expected Parise to hit at least the 35 goal plateau this season.

Come on now, don't start that.

because brylin and clarkson both played/play with pando and madden and the other teams play there top line 20+ minutes a game so of course maddens line will play against them

Just ranting. I'm frustrated as we all are. Here we are, with the chance to put some distance between us and everyone else, and we get 1 out of a possible 6 points.

I never question anyones knowledge or loyalty about the Devils on this board, so I don't like it when someone questions mine, especially a new poster. I think that's fair.

think of it this way,
DEVILS SLUMP: 1 point out of poissible 6
FLYERS SLUMP: 2 points out of possible 20
it could be worse. every team slumps. we managed to get a point where we shuldnt have and now we have to stop the bleeding

True. It's more than critical that we end this B.S. right now though and start playing like we can.
Devilswede 03-02-2008, 04:46 PM Really disappointed in the Devils for not coming through when they really had a great chance to distance themselves from the teams behind...if only a little bit.
I don't care about other teams' streaks, but to me a 3 game losing streak is a lot when you're supposed to be one of the best teams in the conference.
The Devils still haven't found the consistency of a good team....they will have to find that soon.
Darius Dangleaitis 03-02-2008, 04:49 PM Pittsburgh winning after the first. Assuming they win (which obviously might not happen), we are right back in 5th. It's our own fault as well. Shame that when we controlled our own destiny we had to fall into this funk.
Amazes me even more that people at the deadline were noting how well we were playing for their non-desire to acquire a scoring forward. Hopefully now people can see how easy it is to just slip back into the pack after being on top in today's East.
Brooklyndevil 03-02-2008, 05:06 PM Just as long as we're playing well going into the playoffs I will be happy. We won the division the last two seasons and it hasn't gotten us past the second round. That's why I'm not to concerned about the conference or even the division.
MoonDragn 03-03-2008, 10:32 AM Problem isn't really not playing Parise enough. We're taking way too many penalties this season. Part of it is the refs calling every little thing. Look at Pandolfo, when have you known him to take alot of penalties? Yet even he's been called for a number of them this season.
When we have too many penalties, the Penalty killers are going to get the top minutes.

Every other team in the NHL ensures that their best offensive players get ample ice team even in the event of penalties...I don't have the time now to present those numbers (shouldn't even be on here in the first place!), but playing Elias/Parise for a total of approx 31 mins each over two games in which the team scores 1 goal and produces probably 6-8 scoring chances is completely unacceptable and constitutes a backward method of coaching.
MKWing26 03-04-2008, 12:12 PM Think about it...what player in the NHL isn't streaky for atleast parts of the season. Look at AO, the league's leading scorer...he didn't score a goal in seven straight games (of course until he scored three last night in the Caps' 10-2 win), he's been pretty consistent this year, probably the most consistent in the league, but even a guy like him can have a slump. Parise isn't AO and right now he's our team's best offensive player. It isn't easy to deal with that as a 23-year-old. We see guys like Crosby and AO and we think every young player can play like that, but most can't. Remember when Devin Setoguchi came in to the NHL guns blazing playing with Joe Thornton? Result so far: 11 goals in 31 games. This guy was actually being tabbed as a Calder candidate!
I believe we're still expecting too much out of Parise and Zajac. They're young kids, hell, Zajac and I were born in the same year. For the life of me, I couldnt imagine at my age centering a second line in the NHL being expected to be one of the club's top offensive threats. I saw expectations of totals like 90 points from Parise and 70 from Zajac, which are ridiculous. Zajac shouldn't even be in the NHL yet because kids that are his size take longer to develop and get more time in the minors (i.e. Bobby Ryan). Unfortunately, we don't really have a choice but to expect such things out of them because we have no one else.
