Preview: (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&page=Preview&gameNumber=813&season=20072008&gameType=2)

Beating the New Jersey Devils over the past few years has been very difficult for the Buffalo Sabres. Taking them to a shootout this season certainly hasn't provided the winning formula. The Sabres hope to avoid getting swept in a season series by the Devils for the first time in a decade on Wednesday night when the teams meet at HSBC Arena.

New Jersey has dominated the series with Buffalo lately, going 16-4-0 with three ties since the start of the 2001-02 season. The Devils' three victories over the Sabres this season have decided in a shootout. Buffalo (24-21-7) hasn't lost all four games to New Jersey in a season series since 1997-98. The Sabres' last meeting with the Devils was one of their most frustrating losses of the season as they squandered a two-goal lead before losing 3-2 in a shootout at home on Jan. 12.

After falling behind 3-1 in the third period, New Jersey (30-20-3) appeared headed for its fourth loss in five games Monday against Pittsburgh. The Devils, though, got goals from Patrik Elias and David Clarkson less than two minutes apart midway through the final period and Zach Parise scored 37 seconds into overtime for a 4-3 victory.
Instead of completing a 1-4-0 homestand, New Jersey brings a two-game winning streak to Buffalo before returning to the Prudential Center for four straight games.

"It wasn't reinventing the wheel," said Parise, who had two assists to go with his 20th goal. "We had to put forth a better effort and we did in the third. Hopefully we saw the way we need to play." Elias had a goal and two assists in the win, giving him six goals and four assists in his past six contests. Also contributing offensively is captain Jamie Langenbrunner, who has three goals and five assists during a seven-game point streak.

The Devils, who trail Atlantic Division-leading Philadelphia by two points, have outscored opponents 14-6 during a three-game road win streak. Buffalo continued its strong play of late with a 4-2 victory Tuesday at Boston. Daniel Paille scored twice and Ryan Miller stopped 30 shots for the Sabres, who are 4-0-1 in their last five games - all on the road - after winning just once in the previous 13 overall contests (1-7-5).

"After the first two games (of the road trip), we knew we needed to pick it up," Paille said. "We're not in a playoff spot yet, so we've got to keep it up." The victory moved Buffalo up to 10th in the Eastern Conference, four points behind Boston for the eighth and final playoff berth. Miller's outstanding play is one reason for the Sabres' resurgence. He is 4-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average in his last five starts, and has also played very well in three starts this season against the Devils, yielding four regulation goals on 90 shots. Jason Pominville has also played a key role for Buffalo, tallying two goals and five assists in his last three games. He leads the team with 32 assists and 45 points.

I can't wait to see the Parise - Elias - Langenrunner combination for a full game. Jamie brings that physical aspect to that line and I still don't understand why people keep on saying that Langs is perfect on a line with Pandolfo and Madden. We need our top guys playing top minutes... period. Gionta is no longer the smurf of the past and that's why he got downgraded to the 2nd line and Jamie got moved up.

Looks like Andy Greene is getting shafted once again for Vishnevski... that's sad. With all that sayd, I think the Devils will win this game 5-2. The Sutter "" beetween the 2nd and the 3rd of last game will carry on in this one and they'll play one of they're best games of the season.

I have no problem with Marty playing tonight, it's when he plays both games of a back to back against teams like the Kings that I get pissed.

It's interesting that the Devils have won all three previous games in the serious but a Sabres player has been the first star in all of them. Hopefully the Devils finish off the season series with a win and go into the weekend with some momentum.

Not much since he's played once in about the last 20 years...

We need a shutout tonight, we have given up 3+ goals in the last 6 straight games! Not devils hockey! I would love to have Elias continue his great play and Parise keep up with the points. It seems like that first line of Parise-Elias-Langenbrunner is hot right now, hopefully they remain together for the entire game, and, if all goes well, the rest of the season. The all have chemestry which is great to see! They all also hustle which will produce goals, scoring chances, and powerplay opportunities.

Greene has played in 2 fewer games than Oduya but still has more TOI than Oduya AND Vish. How is that getting shafted? Greene also has more PP TOI than Oduya, but the same number of PP points. IIRC, Greene and Vish have amount the same amount of PK TOI (although Vish has played more games), but I’m fairly sure that Vish has been on the ice for fewer of the other team’s PP goals. Vish also has more hits and blocked shots.

It's pretty hard for a young guy to get better if he's watching from the press box instead of actually playing some D. Vishnevski is a good hitter but that's about it. He goes for that big wammy but at the same time, takes himself out of the play and generates alot of odd men rushes the other way. To me, Greene is a more complete player then Vish and isn't Andy supposed to be part of our future ??? if so, why don't we let him play in order to "fix" what needs to be "fixed"

I don’t think there’s any guarantee that Greene will be part of the Devils’ future. Actually, Vish is signed for three years, while Greene is signed for two. Either way, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

I’m actually surprised at how many people are slamming Vish so much. Did you guys have especially high expectations for a guy who is more or less a reclamation project? I don’t really see Vish as responsible for odd-man rushes (our forwards, on the other hand…). I do think his physical edge is his strong point, but he also plays on the PK and block shots. People get on his case for screening Marty or deflecting in shots, but even Colin White has done that. Greene might have a lot of potential, but I think that Rachunek and Vishnevski, even Oduya, are bringing more to the team right now.

Don't get me wrong; I really liked Greene's play last year and he drank the Lou-aid, but he had chances earlier in the season to make a case for himself to stay in the line up, when he was playing and Oduya/Rachunek/Vishnevski weren’t, but he lost it. As much as people get on Oduya and Vishnevski for messing up, Greene has had his share of brainfarts and bad games.

The thing is though, when Oduya's out there I'm a complete nervous wreck. When Andy's out there, I'm not.

And the Vishnevski/Rachunek pairing scares the crap out of me as well!

But my money was invested in an Andy Greene jersey and that's why I keep singing his praises and that's why I want him out there.

I know how you feel. Toward the end of last season I invested in a Rafalski jersey. We all know how that turned out though.

The Vish/Rachunek pairing scared me at first, but they’ve been growing on me. I actually liked the Vish/Greene pairing too, but it seemed to me that they never clicked together that well. Mottau and Greene scare me the most when they’re on the PK, but I’m on with Vish out there.

And see, that’s the point I was trying to make when I posted those numbers. A lot of people seem to think that Greene is being shafted, but numbers-wise he’s really not. He got a lot more time during the first half of the season. So it’s conceivable that he’ll get another chance once Rachunek or Oduya starts to really suck, but recently, both of those guys have been playing pretty well.

I hated the 3 year Vishnevski signing when it first happened and I still hate it now. I don't understand why Lou couldn't have gave him a Rachunek-like 1 year deal. He's a very replacable player that seems like he's unfortunately going to stick around.

As much as people get on Oduya and Vishnevski for messing up, Greene has had his share of brainfarts and bad games.

I have serious Vish issues -- or Vissues for short -- but he has been improving slowly and steadily under Larry Robinson's system, deflecting far fewer pucks on net, picking his spots better, etc.

He worries me a lot less than he used to, and like most people on these boards, I think we don't smash people in the mouth nearly enough. That's why I love White and Clarkie... And have been disappointed in Asham. But Vish at least brings that sorely needed aspect of the game.

Rachunek and Greene play a similar puck moving style, both with a big shot from the point. They are in many ways redundant players, although Rachunek is more experienced. Karel is on a one year contract, so I imagine his spot will go to Greene "full time" next season if Andy isn't traded at the deadline.

But swapping Greene for Vish makes much less hockey sense to me, and apparently to Brent Sutter as well.

The Sabres haven't played at home in a while..so I'm pretty sure they'll be pumped up. They played last night, so that might work in the Devils' favour, but then again it might not...just look at what happened against the Rangers.

Hopefully the Devils start this game on a strong note, not like the last time we faced them. Buffalo scored on us right away. We're a much better team when we have the lead, even if hasnt looked like it the past few games.

Not only was vanek hitting him but it was away from the play and could be called interference or holding because they didnt let clarkson go. How is that not a peanlty. I dont get it. Well, yeah, talent comes into play. Can't make mistakes like Vish made there, if that's the kind of hockey you're going to play. You give up alot of offense to try and keep pucks out of the net. If pucks are going in the net, what you are doing is useless.

Sutter should kick his own ass. He's playing Julienball with a weak group of D. What can you reasonably expect?

If you think that was a one-way discussion the other night, you're nuts.

Players don't play lazy crappy freelance hockey by playing box + 1. Coaches would kill for players who would freelance defensive hockey. It just doesn't happen.

Yep. Took a huge gamble, puck turns over, Clarkson is a D-man, because he has no chance of getting to the bench.

Sutter has been lobotomized. The best part is that he's got everyone totally sold that it's the players crappy efforts. :)

They're forechecking one and giving free entry and rallying around Marty. That. Is. Julienball. Play 5 on 5 like you're killing a penalty. Only problem is that our D is prone to screwups and can't clear the zone.

If you're scared of the Sabres putting 10 on you, fine, whatever. But how in the world are you going to score on them by rolling up in a ball when they're infinitely quicker?

Gio gets his patented rush up the wing and there's 3 guys back because he led out with the puck, no support because everyone else was rolled in a ball.

There's nothing wrong with gambling. Karel's gamble was a big one, though.

I think the inconsistent play has been 50% players and 50% Sutter. The Devils consistently come out with slow legs, but I don't like how Sutter's system has evolved from Game 1 to game 54. You're right, it's too akin to Julien's system last year.

We actually have alot of good transition players on this team who can skate. This isn't a slow team. Elias, Parise, Gio, Langs, Madden are all guys who can really move up the ice, yet we're bogging down too much.

Who would you like to see in his place?

Put Weekes in. Double shift somebody? Call someone up? Take a big dump and put some skates and a jersey on it. Hell, skate shorthanded, I don't care he sucks. The guy brings absolutely nothing to this team. 3.4 mil, thanks for reminding me, now I'm really pissed. I don't care how big he is or how he's strong on the puck until he puts up some numbers other that his rediculous salary.

I'm going to keep ripping him until he does something, it worked with Zajac.

The forwards, I think, are the teams strength other than Marty. Relative strength, but strength nontheless.

I think the players do share some blame because there's some sort of lethargy or confusion out there. I mean, that system is not difficult to play, anyone who played kiddie basketball should understand it. Apparently, Vish never played kiddie basketball.

Tap-ins in Julienball are beyond inexcusable. But when those things happen, you have to wonder if it's the best concept for this team.

I was wondering the same. I thought he was going to say he started in the fifties not the seventies. He got going once he started talking about himself. Matt had to get him on track about covering hockey. Hardly said anything about getting put on the Devils' beat. Definitely not a radio voice.

Good for a laugh.

Have you watched any games recently or do you just look at boxscores?

I've followed this team since they came to NJ and have watched just about all the games this year. Please enlighten me to what he does that deserve that salary. The guys been bouncing from team to team his whole career and now we're the next team to get suckered into thinking he's going to break out.

Sure he's had a few games where he looked really strong but there hasn't been any consistancy. If you think going out there and not making any bad mistakes makes him a good player I just don't agree. That might be a good way to judge Cam Janssen but not a 6'5" supposedly offensively skilled forward.
