Help: Internship with Devils

Hey, I have a question. So at my school (Hofstra), they had a flyer last year with a list of interships that the school offered or had connections with. One of them was a marketing internship with the Islanders. Since I'm a marketing major I thought that was really cool and now that I'm going to get an internship myself this summer, thought it would be really cool if the Devils had something like that. I've been trying to find any kind of information for internships and things with the Devils but can't. Does anybody know where I can go to find this kind of information? Website? Email? Anything would be appreciated, thanks.

Let's go Devils!

edit: spelled internship wrong in the title and can't change it now. Awesome haha. And I also just found a website www.teamworkonline.com that has a job for the Devils. So if anyone has anything besides that any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That's really cool. I'm a Sports Studies major (which is basically a Sports Marketing or Sports Industry major) with a minor in Business in my sophomore year here at UNH. I'll probably start looking for stuff like that in the near future. I've been thinking about sending stuff to the Devils, Giants, or maybe even the league offices. We'll see.

One of the jobs listed on the first link is an Administrative Assistant Position in the Accounting Department at Madison Square Garden. With my college major having been accounting and having worked for 3 years as an Accounts Receivable Clerk, if I lived in NYC, I would be all over this in a heartbeat!

You should go right to the source. Per the newjerseydevils.com website the e-mail address is: mktg@newjerseydevils.com

1st send an e-mail to them letting them know that you'd like an opportunity and I'd follow it up with an old fashioned hard copy and cover letter sent to the offices as well. If you take the time to do that I suspect they will contact you and let you know if they are interested or not.

Just my 2 cents.

Hey guy...

I interned for the Devils in 1995-96 (yeah, no comment) for six months, and it was a great experience. I originally sent a letter to Peter McMullen expressing my interest while a student at Rutgers, letting them know I was a journalism/English major that was looking to get into media relations. Peter had me in and we hit it off immediately, but when they described the job to me, I had to put it off because I knew the semester was going to be tough. He applauded me for my honesty and said, "maybe next semester." So, the next semester I gave him a call and said I was ready, and they gladly accepted me with three others.

It was long days and no pay -- and Howard the Duck (AKA Mike Levine) -- is still there and was a real doucehbag. Anyway, I would do it again in a minute, just know that it's pretty thankless and demanding. I was offered a regular position, but knew I was more of a fan than an employee of the team and that my personality just didn't fit into Lou's corporate philosophy. Still, the Devils are impressed with kids that stand on their own two feet, do anything asked of them, but aren't afraid to speak up when the time is right. It's what I did, and to this day, I still use them as a reference if needed.

As for the job, I picked up Russian prospects from New York, worked as the mascot during a parade, drove Stephane Richer home after his car didn't start in the parking lot (After a Devils win against a woeful Ottawa team where Richer had like 10 shots on goal: "Don Beaupre...I don't understand...he either make 100 saves or lets in 10 goals...(shaking head))", found a mistake on Brodeur's GAA in the 1994 media guide, which they corrected, had Holik yell at me when I walked through the locker room area after the designated time, got invited to a Mike Peluso "party" (did not attend dammit!), had Stan Fischler ask me to dig up the Mario Lemieux every-goal-in-every-way game scoresheet, saw the Soderstrom fight with Schwab (with Fischler saying to me in the halo IMMEDIATELY after the fight: "Schwab is gone." He was soon after.), worked a game in a snowstorm when no media showed up (and rec'd a whopping two tickets to a game of my choice afterward), answered fan letters, and various other duties.

So go for it, ensure you're dressed for success if you get an interview, and ensure your letter is hard copy. The Devils expect nothing but perfection -- deliver that and you'll be rewarded.

Indeed, sound advice. Do this - I was in my final year of marketing at college and wrote a letter to every NHL and AHL team that I would consider working for. To a one, every one of them responded and most had a personal letter, not just a boiler plate response sent back to me. No takers, but I wasn't applying specifically to a position but rather just poking around for possible positions.

It was pretty cool to see all those logo'd envelopes appearing in the mailbox each day and wonder if there was a 'yes' inside. At any rate - good old fashioned cover letter and personalized letters work great still and show more ambition than just an email to a generic address.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone. Yea, I found all those listings right after I posted, go figure. I'll do what you said and send an email and hard copy to the Devils. Also gonna send one to the Giants, Yankees, Red Bulls, and Islanders. Decided against the Rangers seeing as the work is probably more than even the Devils one.....plus theyre the Rangers! I'll probably try for the Islanders job though just so I can live at school and walk across the street to work.

But thanks to everyone who has posted.

I had the same exact idea last year, so I did my best to make it happen. I am a finance major and had a year's interning experience with Smith Barney. I sent my resume and cover letter to Peter McMullen, then followed it up with an email about a week later. He called me on a friday afternoon and I spoke with him for about a half hour. He said that the devils no longer have internship programs. They stopped them after the lockout because it was a hassle dealing with lawyers and the schedules of the students was tough to work around. He also said that he was impressed with my resume and said that my cover letter was sincere, so he wanted to actually speak to me and not just give me a blanket response. He was a very nice guy; we spoke about school, he told me a few funny stories, and he gave me some advice.

Something he also said which made sense, if you want to intern with a sports team, do it during the season to see actually how everything operates...good luck!
