Colin White Appreciation Thread

A hearty "Well done, Sir!!" to the FIRST STAR of tonight's game: COLIN WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A two-point night from the big guy, including his first goal in two years and 125 games played, with a rocket off the Madden face-off... As well as some thundering checks and solid play in front of Marty.

Well deserved KUDOS to the much maligned and wildly under-appreciated BACKBONE of our team defense.

Coming off of perhaps his worst game of the season against the Rangers (although that Vancouver game was also highly problematic), it is nice to see him bounce back with such a gem of a performance -- and get off the goal scoring schneid!!

It cannot be underestimated how much he has solidified our blue line since his return from a career threatening eye injury, but it is no coincidence our team went from worst to first in the division on his shoulders -- our rag tag D corps playing like world beaters compared to where we were at the beginning of the season.

Thanks, Whitey!! You earned it!

GREAT GAME!!!

The best thing about Whitey, aside from his thundering hits when he gets pissy - his absolute honesty and well grounded nature to appreciate his role and performance on any given night. In the 1st intermission interview he demonstrated this yet again laughing at the suggestion he be put on the PP and then again when he recited exactly how many games it had been since he scored.

How many guys actually would A) know and B) acknowledge a stretch that long - except someone so humble as Colin.

The guy's a warrior to even be playing right now in a situation where he could easily retire due to career ending injury with that eye and sit back and collect a paycheck from the NHLPA rather than play and battle through the injury/situation. Instead, he plays for his teammates and shoulders quite a load at that given the roster.

He may make mistakes, but he more than makes up for them in total.

:handclap: Here's to the Nova Scotian defenseman.

ps - psychic prediction when I put his pic in the GDT taking a big slapper. ;)

i was never a White fan in the past, but this year he has made a believer out of me. he is the only defenseman we have that isnt afraid to clear the bodies from the front of the net

Sure White scored tonight but he still sucks. We pay him 3 million a year to get a goal every 125 games and to play medicore defence. Sure he's a big guy who does take the body alot but anytime he takes the body its takes him out of position or he falls down because he has no balance. I get more nervous when he's on the ice more then any other player. He runs around like a chicken who just got its head taken off. And when he does that he, takes himself out of position. Lou should trade him so we then can make a move to get a better D-man. A dman that can skate, hit and score goals.

Colin White is one of those guys you need on the blueline..

Also, as RG mentioned, the guy has suffered an almost career ending injury, and is battling through it, thats true heart.

All the power to Colin, lets see some more of it Whitey!!

Vishnevski isn't afraid to do it either (especially on the PK). That's the only reason he has a continued role on the team. Of course White much better than him at it (as well as much smarter defensively and at picking his spots).

I'm a White fan but I'm not a fan of appreciation threads after one good game. He deserved an appreciation thread those first 10 games or so after he got back. Now he needs to build on this game and just play smart defense, and don't turn the puck over. He's an important part of the team and he needs to step it up for the playoff stretch.

Also, newfish is a dumbass.

No we pay him 3 million dollars a year to clear bodies in front of the net, to be a rock on the PK, and provide great leadership. White needs no words to show what a great leader he is-his comeback from the eye injury is truly inspiring.

I guess you don't appreciate guys on the team who do other things than score. White provides so many more things. I've really warmed up to him in the past 2 years, I was never his biggest fan, but now I really like and respect him.

There aren't many D-men who are bettar than Colin on our team, Martin is only better. Stop worrying about White not scoring the goals, and worry about the guys that we ARE paying to score goals who haven't.

There's alot of things that are good about Colin White. One of the most important things about him that you won't see on a score sheet is that he knows Marty and Marty knows him. I don't think Brodeur trusts another defenceman more on this team than Colin White.

Outside of that, every team needs a defenceman that plays Colin's role. I happen to think he plays that role really well. He had issues with taking stupid penalties years ago but those days are gone and I'm quite happy with his game on most nights. 3 Million is not too much to ask for him when you look at what guys like Sutton and Hal Gill are making (heck I think Sutton makes 5) and I would rather have White than either of them.

I was actually looking to add a reference to his 1st Star game last night to an existing "appreciation" thread, but since Whitey gets precious little respect on these boards (which is criminal), there actually wasn't one...

Most of our second tier, lesser defenders have appreciation/apology threads -- even Karel Rachenuk, who kinda sucks and has been here three minutes, Johnny Oduya, and even my boy Mike Mottau.

But no love for Whitey.

So, here begins the respect he deserves.

White was terrible against the Rangers and has been terrible in other games. Don't see why he gets a Appreciation Thread because he scores his first time in 100+ games.

Anyone who think's White's a waste, or that we'd be better off without him needs to rewatch some of the games he didn't play, specifically the PK.

Are we all forgetting how much we all hated White after the Rags game? Sure I never really minded him, but let him score one more goal before appreciating him.

Pretty heartless to chime in on an appreciation thread if you just want to badmouth the guy. If you don't have something positive to say about someone then perhaps just skip saying anything?

Would you show up to a birthday party and point out all the bad things that person had done in their life?

Because he is the backbone of our defense, and the only one who can fricken play D besides Martin I don't care if he gets zero points every season, his job isn't to score.

Great to see White have a game like he did last night. It was a great goal he scored and the Devils need his veteranship on this team. He is the only one left now with Rafalski gone to Detroit.

I'm sorry but our D was a lot more sucky before White came back. No one cleared the net and the opposition was allowed to skate the puck right up to Brodeur's goal crease on a nightly basis. Not all guys are meant to score points. You need the guys that will do the dirty work. I'm sure Kenny Daneyko went longer than 125 games with out a goal in his career.

Colin White is the least of our concerns.

We have a ton of things to worry about, like getting more out of our underacheiving and highly-paid forwards.

I wouldn't see any difference in our D with or without White. Although, the only person I say would make a difference to our D if he left is Martin.

He responded with a good game after an aweful game Vs. the Rangers. He's probably one of two of our best defensemen. However, he isn't playing as good as he did when he returned from his eye injury. And to all you who posted they didn't care about losing to the Rangers the other night, they're only one point behind. That's what happens when you give a team ten points and only come out with one.

I thought Colin had the eye injury, but apparently YOU would be the blind one.

You noticed NO difference between our defense WITHOUT White, during the first 20 games of the season, and the performance of the D corps since his return? Really? C'mon... Really??

Last season, with Colin White, we were the top rated defense in the entire Eastern Conference, with a PK in the top 5 for the entire NHL.

During the first 20 games this season, the Devils were so atrocious we actually had the WORST PK in the entire NHL, an absolute abomination, and either the lowest (or perhaps second or third lowest) rated defense in the East. Essentially, going from first to worst on D without the big guy.

After ending last season in first place in the Atlantic, second seed in the East, we found ourselves DEAD LAST in the Atlantic, with an under .500 record of 8-10-2, looking forward to perhaps our first season out of the playoffs since 1995/96.

Opposing teams were camping out in front of our net, folks were routinely running Marty, and scoring almost at will against our swiss-cheese, gutless Defense. A penalty (and there were many) was essentially equal to a goal against...

Then, upon White's return, announced with a devastating, crease clearing check of Evgeni Malkin into the end boards on his first shift, we whip off 8 straight wins (Colin missing the first game of "The Streak II" of 9 straight), finding ourselves suddenly in FIRST PLACE in the Atlantic...

And our record since his return, even with our current up and down play, is still 21-10-1 (well over .500, obviously...)

And somehow our D has magically returned to form (although apparently nothing to do with regaining our defensive backbone and veteran sense of composure), the Devils now with the LOWEST goals against in the entire Eastern Conference (3rd best in the entire NHL), and our formerly pitiful PK is now ranked 3rd best in the East (with only the Isles and Sabres statistically better than us.)

Yep. No difference. No difference at all. :thumbu:
