The Devils tried to remain positive despite losing their three in a row in regulation for the first time this season.

“Yeah, it’s certainly tough losing to those guys again,” Devils coach Brent Sutter said. “But we have a game in 24 hours (against Los Angeles) and we can’t get too caught up in the fact that we lost them again.”

“At this point, it’s how we play. It’s not how we can’t beat the Rangers,” goaltender Martin Brodeur said. “It definitely is a rivalry and I think it’s most disappointing for our fans. But for our hockey club it was a good effort. We deserved a lot better than what we (got). They were clutching and grabbing a lot and we didn't get any calls. It was just one of these games. .We definitely were the better team out there, I thought.”

Preview (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&page=Preview&gameNumber=787&season=20072008&gameType=2):
The Los Angeles Kings are off to a modest start on their eight-game road trip, but for the team with the worst record in the league, it's a step in the right direction. The Kings look to pick up another point on the road Saturday when they visit the slumping Devils in their first trip to New Jersey in four years.

After falling to Atlantic Division-leading Philadelphia 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday in its first game after the All-Star break, Los Angeles (21-29-3) defeated the New York Islanders 3-1 on Thursday. "Three points for us is a lot," said Kings defenseman Rob Blake, who scored Thursday's game-winning goal on a power play in the third period. "We understood the challenge at hand here coming on this type of a trip after the break. We had a good effort in Philly, and tonight we got the job done."

The Kings have a NHL-low 45 points, and are 13 points out of the Western Conference's final playoff spot. They've been playing much better lately, though, going 6-2-1 since Jan. 10. They are also 5-1-1 on the road since starting the season 4-12-1 away from Los Angeles. "You can't really look at the big picture," said goaltender Jason LaBarbera, who made 28 saves Thursday. "It's probably good for us to get out here and see something different and get away from the stuff we've seen a lot of this year. "We've played well the first two games on this trip and hopefully we can just keep doing what we're doing."

LaBarbera improved to 4-1-1 with a 2.59 goals-against average in his last six road games after starting the season 3-8-1 with a 3.15 GAA in his first 13 games away from Staples Center. He has started each of the Kings' last 11 games, and is 6-2-1 with a 2.49 GAA in the last nine. LaBarbera has never faced the Devils in his career, while backup Jean-Sebastien Aubin is 3-9-1 with a 3.11 GAA lifetime against New Jersey. Los Angeles defeated the Devils 3-2 in a shootout at Staples Center on Nov. 27, 2006, the teams' only meeting last season. The Kings have not visited New Jersey since a 3-2 overtime loss on Feb. 15, 2004.

The Devils (28-20-3) fell 3-1 to the New York Islanders on Friday, dropping their third straight for the first time since a season-high four-game skid Oct. 18-27. New Jersey has lost five of its last seven games, with all of those defeats coming on home ice. The Devils have scored just eight goals in those losses.

"I thought we did a lot of good things here. Obviously, we didn't score enough goals," New Jersey coach Brent Sutter said after Friday's loss. The Devils, who led the Atlantic on Jan. 12, have fallen into third in the division, two points back of first-place Philadelphia. Martin Brodeur, who had 23 saves against the Rangers, is just 2-5-0 with a 2.75 GAA since Jan. 16. However, Brodeur is 7-4-1 with a 1.89 GAA and one shutout lifetime against the Kings.

Let's hope they play just as hard for this game as they did against the Rangers - just with a different result.

LETS GO DEVILS!!!! :devdance::towel::devdance::towel:

The keys to tonight's game.

1) Marty needs to sit one out. Weekes should play tonight.

2) Janssen HAS to play tonight. (Asham sits this one out) Lord knows we could have used him last night. (Parise was the hit leader??? Not acceptable)

3) Vish rides the pine tonight. Brookbank in.

4) Lou needs to pick up the phone & make a trade for Sundin. Greene is on the outs with Sutter. Zajac is too hot & cold, but is a worthwhile consideration for other teams. Asham is useless in a NJ uniform & also on the outs with Sutter. Sundin is the answer for our offense & "added" leadership. Send Toronto those 3 players & GET HIM NOW!!!

5) After that phone call above, Lou needs to pick up the phone & make a trade for Brian Campbell. Let's be honest, Bergfors & Vrana will never see the light of day on this team. The same goes for Fraser who, if they believed in him, would have been our 7th guy, not Brookbank. Thus, Bergfors, Vrana, Fraser & Brookbank for Campbell & a 3rd round pick.

It's a disgrace that Marty's playing tonight, just like it was against Phoenix a couple months back.

And he'll probably get a shutout or a 2-1 win but those that don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it, Marty's 35 - he will burn out in March and April just as he has the past two years post-lockout. Then again with the way the team's playing they won't need Marty past early April anyway.

But still, Weekes has got to get a home start this year - right? I mean if nothing else get the man accustomed to playing at the Rock with the springy boards.

Brodeur is in tonight. Thought maybe if the Devils might have won some of the last home games this would have been a game for Weeks but due to the continuous losing on home ice and with the long break Brodeur is going to play tonight and who knows when will Weeks play next. Obviously Sutter has no confidence in Weeks right now.

I wish Sutter would wake the **** up and scratch Oduya and Rachunek and put in Greene and Brookbank. The defense pairings that he has is just not working and needs to be changed.

I do hope the Devils scouts take a good hard long look at Rob Blake. He would be a great fit for the Devils right now especially on the PP and having the veteranship that is lacking right now on this Devils team. So hopefully Blake will be a Devil after this weekend. Hey one could only wish and hope for that.

The Kings need to make some trades soon. The way they have been playing as of late is going to get them out of last place and further away from the possible #1.

Kopitar-Osullivan-Brown have been a force this year, the kings will have to hope our offense can prevail against your defense.

LA is 6-3-1 in their last 10; NJ is 5-5-0 in their last 10.

LA is the hotter team right now, thus playing Weekes for the 'easy' reason doesn't hold true right now.

Granted it was a loss to the worst team possible, but I recorded the game and had to watch it late last night (after the GDT was good and locked up thanks to idiotic trolling) and I must say despite the score the guys played hard, skated the whole night, forechecked amazingly well, and outshot the other team. If they replicate that effort every game I have no complaints. I can however complain about the lack of penalty calls and will if LA even remotely holds and hooks like the Rags did last night!

We need a win - cannot afford a 4th straight loss; and Marty gives us the best chance of that. Sorry Weekes - but he's probably still sore from his honeymoon anyhow. :sarcasm:

I think it will be detroit or Ottawa if he is traded at all. He has pretty much said he will be moving back to L.A. in the off-season anyways. But back to what I said, "It may be better for this team to fall to a better draft position." Top 5 would be even better, than making the playoffs and getting bounced out. This team will be lucky to get out of a first round match-up. I never said lose on purpose.

I really would like to see Asham scratched in favor of Janssen tonight. Playing a bottom dwelling western conference team on the second night of a back to back is a prime recipe for the Devils coming out flat. If Cam played I'm sure he'd wake the team and fans up. The way the East has been this year it's conceivable for the Devils to get bounced in the first round or for the Devils to get to the Conference final and beyond. It all depends on the matchup. The Devils matchup well against teams like Philly, Montreal, and Boston, while they don't matchup well against, both NY teams and Ottawa. So it'll probably depend on how the team is playing up going into the playoffs and their first round matchup. You act like this team is a terrible team. It's a top 8 team in the East with a decent chance of getting to a conference final with a couple of trades.

agree on both counts. isnt the whole reason to getting someone of weekes ability, to actually play him more? we all know that even tho marty will have yet another great season, hell be burnt out come playoff time. but i guess that idea was thrown out the window in order to get the W's in the reg season.....showing no faith in a very capable and unselfish player in weekes. HUGE mistake. as for asham, well seeing how he was with the islanders for the time he was there, im already used to this disappearing act, and with cams return, its the best time to make the swap and bench asham for a few time he shows in practice hes hungry for it. sometimes the things the coaches do really make me wonder what theyre thinking. then again, im not a coach...but im not blind either. sigh, oh well.

I'm dumbfounded with Sutter right now. When we were going good, he was making lineup changes and line changes left and right. Now that we've hit a rough patch, he's making no line changes or lineup changes to try to shake things up. Janssen would bring some sorely needed energy to the lineup tonight, something that Asham hasn't brought since November.

I wonder if the Devils won last night if Weekes would have gotten the start tonight. I would like to think so, but I doubt it.

Just for your information about tonight's game.

Blake is out for at least 2 weeks and will not play tonight for LA. (My bad, it's already been posted)

B.Boyle and P.Harrold recalled from Manchester-Boyle is expected to play.

Good luck tonight devils fans, should be a good game to watch.

i think tonight will be a good game. i just hope my kings score quickly. that's the only way we can win. and since tonight the kings are bringing up Boyle from manchester it is going to be interestin. he may be a few inches shorter than zdeno chara the question is can he play really good. good luck on tonights game.

Since Brian Boyle is up, why don't we call up Ollie Malmivaara? I wonder if either one can fight? Probably Boyle. BTW, you know Gionta is going to take a run at Boyle the way he goes after Chara. Boyle will look around and take a sock at another player because Gionta will be between his legs.

If Janssen can play, he should.

That is all for now.

The team isn't playing poor because of the player lineup, it's a lack of effort, focus, and drive. Problems that would remain regardless of who is called up and such. That's something the squad's got to figure out and no shaking up of the lineup would force their hand. Or truly determine whether players need to go up/down/elsewhere.

Compared to the losses to Florida, Montreal, and Pittsburgh, the Devils played well. Losing to Our Hated Rivals™ suck, but let's keep it in perspective - they didn't give up on the game after 20-40 minutes, that actually means something.

Well, we didn't blow a third period lead, because we didn't have a lead to begin with... So, yes, a less disgusting loss, but nothing to crow about, build on or take anything positive from, IMO.

And *****ing about the refs doesn't change the fact that we had only five shots in the third period, with maybe one or two actual scoring chances, max.

That kind of effort isn't going to get it done. If we had a third period lead, we would have lost it with what we brought out there for the last 20 minutes...

We need some spark, badly, yet Coach Line Shuffler McChangey decides NOW is the time to ride it out...? How come that wasn't when the PEG line won 8 of 9 games for us? Why stick lines now???

Actually, cursing the Refs out does change the fact that we had only 5 shots. Part of it was the biased penalty calls on us which totally killed our momentum. The other part was the fact that the Rangers were grabbing and clutching using the old trap and the refs did not call any of it. That itself limited alot of the scoring chances we could have had.

anyone get the feeling with all these consecutive scratches that Greene is a likely trade candidate?

I can't think of any other rational reason for Rachunek to be out there with him on the bench so much.
