Beating the rival New York Rangers has been enough of a problem this season for the New Jersey Devils. Doing it against a well-rested Henrik Lundqvist will only make that more difficult.
The Devils hope to snap a four-game losing streak to their metropolitan-area rivals on Friday night when the teams meet at the Prudential Center.
New Jersey (28-19-3) has failed to win in nine games this season against its two biggest rivals - the Rangers and New York Islanders. Despite that 0-6-3 record, New Jersey, which is 0-2-2 against the Rangers, is only two points behind Atlantic Division-leading Philadelphia.
Because of his success against New Jersey, it's not a surprise that Rangers coach Tom Renney chose to start backup Stephen Valiquette at Philadelphia on Wednesday and save Lundqvist for the Devils.
Lundqvist has been in net for all four Rangers' wins this season against New Jersey, allowing only three goals while recording two shutouts and a 0.78 goals-against average. Lundqvist is 9-2-3 with a 1.46 GAA in 14 career starts versus the Devils.
New York (25-22-6) certainly didn't miss its No. 1 goaltender on Thursday as Valiquette stopped 20 shots for his first career shutout in a 4-0 win over the Flyers.
"As long as we carry it over tomorrow in New Jersey and Sunday in Montreal, then we're back in the playoff picture and nobody can count us out anymore," Valiquette said.
The seldom-used backup blanked a Philadelphia team that hadn't scored fewer than three goals in a game since Jan. 4. Valiquette recorded his third win of the season and his first shutout in 21 career appearances.
"I'm pumped, yeah, but with a 4-0 win, we're more excited about that as a team than a shutout for me, that's for sure," Valiquette said.
Nigel Dawes, Petr Prucha, Chris Drury and Brendan Shanahan scored for the Rangers, who ended a six-game road winless streak (0-4-2) with their third victory in four games overall.
"They seem to bring out the best in us and it's a hostile environment here," Renney said. "We wanted to make sure we took the crowd out of it and tried to play our game. We had that success tonight."
The win moved New York out of last place in the Atlantic and within five points of the Flyers.
This will be the second game for Rangers center Scott Gomez back in New Jersey, where he spent his first seven seasons. He has a team-high four points in three games against his former team.
One bad period has cost the Devils in each of their last two games. They allowed three second-period goals in a 4-2 loss to visiting Pittsburgh on Tuesday after they were outshot 20-3 in the third period of a 4-3 defeat to Montreal in the previous contest.
Mike Rupp scored his first two goals of the season for the Devils, who have lost four of six overall, with each defeat coming at home. The Devils have scored only seven goals in those losses.
"We haven't stayed within our game. We've had mental breakdowns," coach Brent Sutter said. "When our team is playing well it is because our detail to our game is very good. Right now it isn't where it needs to be."
Sutter hopes to have captain Jamie Langenbrunner back Friday. Langenbrunner, tied for fourth on the team with 26 points, sat out Tuesday with flu-like symptoms.
Zach Parise and Brian Gionta - New Jersey's leading scorers - have combined for no goals and one assist this season against the Rangers.

lets get it done boys!
PuckStopsHere02 02-01-2008, 12:58 PM I wish I could make it because I'm 4-0 at the Rock, but I couldn't find any reasonably priced tickets so it's a no-go for me. I'll be watching it on my new Hi-Def TV in my basement (it is on Hi-Def tonite right?)
ADD-devil950003 02-01-2008, 01:23 PM i cant take another loss to these blueskirts, time to win against these guys. i have a feeling its gunna be a black out drunk type of night if they make it 5 in a row:shakehead

You and me both pal.
Blitz113 02-01-2008, 01:29 PM I'd like a freaking win (no OT/SO, in regulation) and some goals against Lundqvist for once.
theking72 02-01-2008, 01:31 PM I want another blowout like we had against Phili. Since there is no $1 hot dog night, I think we can get it done.
Clarkson Falls Down 02-01-2008, 01:32 PM I'd like a freaking win (no OT/SO, in regulation) and some goals against Lundqvist for once.
Yeah maybe we can score more than one freakin' goal.

I guess we have to suffer that sweet ass D pairing of Vish - Rachunek too...
I cant wait for that...
Also, the sweet 4th line is gunna get me pumped, especially from the bruising play of Aaron Asham.

Man do I miss Scott Stevens, Avery would s*** himself if #4 was playing, so would Hollweg and Orr.
But that's neither here nor there, we need to concentrate on the win, forget big hits, let's get the two points. If we do manage to "run a few of them to the ditch" on the way to a win, all the better :)
cj225 02-01-2008, 02:20 PM Is it game time yet? I'm so ready to leave work and get to the ROCK!
Devilswede 02-01-2008, 02:23 PM The Devils just CANNOT afford to lose this one! The misery on home ice has to stop!! Beating a NY team wouldn't be bad either! Gotta get 2 points out of this one!!
GO DEVILS!
ADD-devil950003 02-01-2008, 02:25 PM Same here. We better beat these guys this time!
haha and there it is the three alcoholics of the devils board!
Brooklyndevil 02-01-2008, 02:31 PM No excuses for the Devils not to win this game. The Rangers won last night, so their desperation isn't has high as it was before there game with the Flyers. The Rangers are playing the second of a back to back on the road, while the Devs are well rested and mostly healthy and last but not least, they haven't beaten the Rangers this year and are desperate for points. If they lose tonight, we may be looking at a team that some on this board consider cup contenders to possibly not making the playoffs altogether. It's not doom and gloom, it's just the reality of the parity in the league and the current playoff race in our conference.
Mr.Krinkle 02-01-2008, 02:33 PM haha and there it is the three alcoholics of the devils board!
Haha woo! you said it!
MoonDragn 02-01-2008, 02:39 PM You know, we've been having problems with teams that have ex-devils on them. Are they giving away our trade secrets?
Richer's Ghost 02-01-2008, 02:45 PM What team doesn't have an ex-devil? :sarcasm:
Secrets?! we don't need no stinking secrets! Someone bury a shoulder into Hollweg's numbers tonight please!

borrachon 02-01-2008, 02:55 PM I'll miss the game cause I'll be on a ferry, but I don't mind because I fear a blowout. If Sutter wants more passion against the NY teams, why is he sitting Janssen?

Exactly. I thought for sure we'd see Cam in for tonight and Sutter sitting Mr. Whatever for the game. I'm not a huge fan of Janssen's because the team needs offense but he should be used for a game like this.

he's probably not playing because Sutter knows he's going to run Henrik and start a war.
MSGNYR 02-01-2008, 03:42 PM Lets Go Rangers!
BrodeurRULES 02-01-2008, 03:44 PM Sutter needs to stop sitting greene out for oduya already. Also how could he not put in cam :(

read the posting rules dbag, you're gonna get yourself **** canned if you keep doing that.

Darius Dangleaitis 02-01-2008, 03:52 PM It'll be brutal if we lose...my roommate's a Ranger fan.
It's been bad enough this year already.
NaChOs 02-01-2008, 03:56 PM *** I DONT GET IT! why is greene out. this boggles my mind he should be in the lineup day in day out! the odd man out should obviously be rachunek. this is getting on my nerves

Sutter prefers Rachunek for the PP, some think otherwise.

It perplexes me and pisses me off equally as much that Greene sits in favor of both Oduya and Rachunek.
The Jersey Devil 02-01-2008, 04:08 PM Oduya has more a right to be in than Rachunek
Cry_Wolf 02-01-2008, 04:08 PM UGH....I was looking forward too seeing Janssen in there tonight, we could've used him. But, I guess we'll be relying on Clarkson and Rupp and maybe a little of Asham tonight for the toughness then. Hopefully this is the game that sparks the Devils into another streak and gets to them into a scoring blast. We are due for one, and can't keep slipping in losing points.
I would really appreciate it if Sutter would put together the original lines again. :(

How bout this scenario: You just bought your dad a Greene jersey for Christmas that cost $185 and he's continually benched and brought up in 95% of the trade deals people want around here.
How pissed do you think I am?
MoonDragn 02-01-2008, 04:17 PM Next time you see Sutter CJ go chew him out.
Tell him the fans are not happy to see Greene sit over Oduya and Rachunek. Especially given the amount of goals both of them has let through over Greene.

all this beer talk, now I think I'm gonna have to get sauced for the game tonight, too. But I'm going in search of some CAMO 22's. :biglaugh:
Brooklyndevil 02-01-2008, 04:28 PM I'm not claiming to be Mr. Hockey Knowledge, but Greene has been a major disappointment this season and seems to play with no desperation or drive. For a guy who basically came into the season as a rookie, he seems to play like he deserves a spot and doesn't play like he needs to earn one. Now, is he better than the rest? I don't know and it's not saying much anyway.

(Since, in case you didn't realize it, we've been deliberately tanking so we can get the #1 pick in the Metro Ice 2008 Draft ;) )
As for tonight's game, can we please just ****ing win?
Devils Mike 02-01-2008, 04:40 PM Does anyone think Sutter would allow Rupp to play on the PP again? Or was this present from Sutter to Rupp just for one night?
cityhockeyfever 02-01-2008, 04:42 PM Cannot wait for the game as it should be a blast. Plan to head over to New Jersey in about an hour. God knows what traffic I'll be facing. Since I'm travelling from Westchester County, I'll avoid the city altogether and just use the Garden State Parkway, Route 46 momentarily and then Route 21.
As I said in the crowd predictions thread, I am of course rooting for the visiting team because I'm a fan of theirs for over 20 years, but I have to be respectful to my uncle and don't want to make him look bad to his boss. Otherwise I'll probably not be invited back to another Devils game.
As for Devils fans being frustrated at losing all four to the Rangers so far this season, I understand, but this is nothing. Remember your team had the Rangers' number for 11 or 12 years (including that unbeaten streak)?
Ha ha, TMC... I hear ya. You want the Devils to win so your boys don't fall four points behind. I definitely see the logic on that, but then again Islanders fans hate the Rangers even more!
Clarkson Falls Down 02-01-2008, 04:53 PM I'm not claiming to be Mr. Hockey Knowledge, but Greene has been a major disappointment this season and seems to play with no desperation or drive. Why has he been a major disappointment? He's never had terrible game so far like the games that Oduya, Rachunek, and Vishnevski can have. I don't understand how Greene gets so much hate on here when he's a rookie. You guys expected too much from him.
Richer's Ghost 02-01-2008, 05:13 PM Me three. I have some Keystones already lined up.
Keystones? as in bitter beer face?
dude - you need to step it up a few notches to match the quality of beer to the quality of the team you side with.
At least get up to natural light, MGD, pabst or something. Keystone is down at the far end of the beer freezer - step into the middle. ;)
If I'm not having a Labatt Blue, then I'm having some 7 & 7's tonight.

I think some people forget that Greene drank the Louaid, he's a ****ing robot for christ sake, but I don't think ANYONE can take away from him that while he might be emotionless, he often makes smart decisions under pressure and almost never ever seems to get rattled.
maybe that's my own favortism, but while he might not be shocking us all like we may have expected, he's still efficient for the most part as a sophomore, though technically still rookie status.
NJD1982 02-01-2008, 05:15 PM I am going to predict that they play good in the first 2 period then give the game to the Rags in the third.

Henrik Lundqvist has been spectacular though, despite his backup outshining him last night, and the fact his save percentage didn't need a terrorist attack to fall like the world trade center. Hey, you have your opinion and I have mine. He hasn't shown me any passion and is not playing to what he showed in last year's playoffs. And there's a reason why he's in Sutter's dog-house, what they are I don't know, but I bet one of them is attitude.

:snide: Sounds like the conversation before during and after every Islanders game, as well. Just replace Al "Lone Wolf" Trautwig's Devs bashing with something to the effect of: "And when are the Islanders going to find someone who can step up and score for them?" as well as the obligatory "blah blah 15 year contract, blah blah plays the puck too much, blah blah blah but I love Rick DiPietro. By the way he just let a goal in HAHAHAHAHAHA I mean oh thats too bad..."

Classic Devil 02-01-2008, 07:37 PM Colin White 2, Rangers 4. I hope I am wrong!!!

What would we have to give up???
Thanks!!!! :D
A first, Kirill Tulupov, and Petr Vrana. That's what I'd ask.

Why the heck are you so obsessed with trades?! :)
It's not gonna happen with this team. Think about it: Rob Blake wouldn't choose NJ over other teams and he would cost a lot for a rental. Armstrong is a centerman, but not good enough to be on our top 2 lines. Why would we need a guy like that?
fluffernutter mf 02-01-2008, 07:48 PM First of all, implying that Chico eats too much, not cool, Al. Second, who's that guy with Chico?
trueblue9441 02-01-2008, 07:52 PM does anyone have a good stream for this game?
Cutty Sarkn3ss 02-01-2008, 07:56 PM Just go to NHL.com and click on the videos; then the Center Ice tab. . . sign up for the free trial until Feb 4th and watch the game. . . that's what I'm doing. . . the quality is pretty good.

Nice chance from Elias...

devils1983 02-01-2008, 08:41 PM That was interesting what Chico said about Jagr's contract. If he doesn't score 80 points this season he becomes a UFA...or was there more to that?
dzanimal16 02-01-2008, 08:41 PM just so frustrating :shakehead i am at a loss of words the talent of this team right now, mark my words: they will barely get into the playoffs if they do get in, also defensive help please and why PEG was ever split up is beyond me

I actually agree with you. Very very weak goal.

Again no help from the forwards on the defensive side of the puck, White tries to clear, but is closed down by a Ranger forechecker, and the loose puck is pounced on by Dubinksy, where the hell was the centerman??
Infuriating.....
sattar18 02-01-2008, 08:44 PM That was interesting what Chico said about Jagr's contract. If he doesn't score 80 points this season he becomes a UFA...or was there more to that?

dano3forever 02-01-2008, 08:45 PM That was interesting what Chico said about Jagr's contract. If he doesn't score 80 points this season he becomes a UFA...or was there more to that?

devils1983 02-01-2008, 08:48 PM he has to get 84 points, win a round of the playoffs or win the cup to get an extension I think...
I'm pretty sure Chico said that if he doesn't make the requirements (84 points and win the first round) his contact is over. He has 1 year left on it. Chico also mentioned that if infact he doesn't make those numbers...the Capitals free up $3 million on their cap.
Dubinsky is even saying he wasnt shooting, that was a soft goal for sure.
no, he said he was shooting for a rebound, from that angle/distance you hit it as hard as you can, you hope it goes in, but you are aiming for a far side rebound.
Devilswede 02-01-2008, 08:50 PM If we lose this one we're just a couple of points away from losing a playoff spot. If we win this one we're back in first in the division and 2:nd in the Conference.
