fortheloveof666 01-30-2008, 07:35 PM I figure we got the night off, instead of fighting amongst ourselves about our opinions of the team maybe we could do something that is non-partisan and maybe spread our influences some to others.
So this is not to promote downloading of music, although it could easily lead to it, but just to promote some bands that maybe not everyone has heard of that you enjoy, or just bands in general you enjoy, doesn't matter.
I don't know how well it'll go over, but I figure it's worth a shot so we're all not fighting over stupid ****. :D
Post-Rock (instrumental only)- (The) Giants - http://www.myspace.com/giantsmusic
-I recommend listening to the top song on the player as it's brand new, but also "The Palace Stands..." if you're not into music without vocals I wouldn't recommend it, but if you like Explosions In The Sky especially, you'd probably like this band as they're pretty similar. Personally, I find the drumming on Giants much better executed, though.
Early Hardcore/Metal fusion - For The Love Of - http://www.myspace.com/fortheloveof
-If you're wondering where my name comes from this is actually it. This is probably one of the earliest forms of "Metalcore" as it's come to be known as now. I know it's not everyones cup of tea, but I'm sure at least someone here likes the band God Forbid who, by their own admission, is strongly influenced by FTLO and the path they paved for a lot of bands that fused the influences together.
I recommend listening to Crawl To Hide and Millennium, both extremely intense songs with some pretty deep lyrics.
European Metal / Death Metal - Neaera - http://www.myspace.com/neaera
Their page is a little strange, but it should have music on it. They're a band on Metal Blade records that somehow goes completely unnoticed and almost un-promoted. It's pretty strange considering their level of talent but it is what it is. If you're into the Black Dahlia Murder (the band) this would probably suit you well. They're extremely talented and definitely give you all you could want out of a band of the genre. Unfortunately in firefox the music player didn't show up on their page so I can't recommend anything, but any song is pretty damn good, especially on Armamentarium. Definitely a strong At The Gates influence in their songs as well.
well, that's a few for now, I'm sure most won't like them, but that's what I got off the top of my head. Hopefully people will take to this, if not, oh well.
Richer's Ghost 01-30-2008, 07:46 PM I'm into chill music at work since it's non-offensive to other co-workers... if you like that ambient/chill/house/trance genre... check out www.djriver.com
He does mixes of other artists and are available for download. ;)
Side note; in NHL08 there's a song by the group Pilotspeed (very radiohead-esque) so I looked them up and the album is VERY good! only $8.99 on iTunes and worth a listen.
ProudestMonkey27 01-30-2008, 08:21 PM www.robertrandolph.net - Robert Randolph & The Family Band, jam band, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix esque. They are a live band, their latest album wasn't great, but give them a shot.
www.thisisryanshaw.com - Ryan Shaw, soul singer, fantastic voice.
www.xavierrudd.com - One man band out of Australia, fantastic, jam band but a sound of his own.
www.johnbutlertrio.com - Also from Australia, also jam band, again great sound.

The Mad Crapper 01-30-2008, 11:07 PM Gees, I don't know any of these bands. Then again, what do I expect. I'm a old man.
I remember going to see an "Up & Coming" Metal Band that came to America to open for Judas Priest back in 1982. Their name, Iron Maiden.
Show that show one weekend, followed by Fastway, Blackfoot & Triumph the following weekend. :yo:
Both of those shows were amoung the best concerts I ever went to see & I've been to over 200 of them.
DevilBesideYou 01-30-2008, 11:36 PM Silence 4 – acoustic, alternative rock. They were actually a Portuguese band that sang mostly in English. They disbanded in 2001. Great stuff though. Their official site domain has long expired, but here’s some YouTube clips of some of my favorite songs: Borrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgjQWcTM5Uo) (off their first album Silence Becomes It) A (Very) Little Respect (http://youtube.com/watch?v=eenTOFA-bUw) (Erasure cover)
Remioromen (http://www.remioromen.jp/) - mellow J(apanese) rock - Akanezora (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vJvJDagtao) (song)
m.o.v.e (http://www.electropica.com/jp/) - Japanese techo with some rap mixed in. I saw them live about a year ago and they were truly awesome. If anyone is familiar with anime, they're know for doing the opening and ending themes to the Initial D series. Dogfight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkDvNsvkV3g)
Porno Graffitti (http://www.pornograffitti.jp/) - J-rock. I've actually liked these guys ever since I was in high school. - Melissa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgLwXgXlEVw)
X-Japan (http://www.xjapan.ne.jp/) - symphonic/visual rock - Endless Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Beujgb0OBeY). Beautiful song, although I do love Yoshiki's instrumental version. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbaRAWfwxoI)
12 girls band - a group of 13 Chinese young women (12 on stage) who are classically trained in traditional Chinese instruments and play modern and traditional songs. This link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqQx6UwlDMA) has them first playing a cover of Nakajima Miyuki's chijou no hoshi

britdevil 01-31-2008, 04:20 AM Greatest band in the world = Jimmy Eat World, ive been listening to these guys since 1999, and Ive loved every minute of it.... In february they are finally coming to my home city too.... Its gunna be amazing!!
Also, cant beat good ol' Brit Pop or British Indie, The Kooks, Razorlight, The Hoosiers, The Fratellis are all good shouts lately... if you want some classic Brit Pop, cant beat Blur or Oasis.
Been listening to alot of Pendulum recently, great Aussie drum'n'bass synth band, I hate drum'n'bass, but these guys are something special, well worth a listen....

I saw Maiden last year at CAA....they didn't even play Number Of The Beast or Run To The Hills, that's mildly disappointing. But overall it was a pretty intense show.
ctynan44 01-31-2008, 01:48 PM My top bands:
3 Inches of Blood - Metal. They're like an updated Iron Maiden
AFI - They cover many genres like: punk, techno, hardcore, screamo, etc.....always a classic to me.
Rise Against - punk. They're VERY political
Enter Shikari - Technocore from England. I believe one of they're songs is on NHL 08.

....yes, opinions are like *******, i know....
Nothing wrong with having an opinion. Hopefully it doesn't spark debate because I was trying to avoid it but the reality is Tool gets chunked into the mall metal class largely by their own actions. They often tour with these types of bands, hence drawing in fans from bands like those. So it's an inevitability.
If I learned anything from my short stint with mall metal, it's that, a large majority of the younger fans tend to float wherever the wind blows them. I am generalizing though, not necessarily stereotyping, but if you ask me it's that group that tends to be the ones that get suckered into bands by the sticker labels on the CD fronts at Hot Topic that say "for fans of..."
The same sort of transition happened again in the past 5 years when Hatrebreed (although they suck horribly and are more repetitive than club/dance/house music) broke the barrier of both underground and mainstream with Hardcore/Metal. After they played Ozzfest their fanbase skyrocketed and there was almost no Mall Metal kids you could find that didn't own a shirt or something. Why? Because they felt like they found something new, something more extreme, heavier, and as many people I encountered would say "more underground."
As the years past a lot more bands started to gain popularity from the mixture of "the scene" like From Autumn To Ashes, Unearth, Killswitch Engage (although they were always destined for it), God Forbid, arguably Poison The Well, and especially Lamb Of God. And the result? Suddenly shows of 300 or so people many of whom you were at the very least familiar with, was packed with 7-800 people most of which you didn't know and didn't understand what they were involved in.
People evolve, but some people don't evolve for the right reasons, they just follow things because it seems like the thing to do. Hardcore and Metal in NJ is all but dead...you can look at almost any tour now and no one comes through NJ because there is almost no where to play because everything has been shut down. There is another side to this story too, but while Hardcore/Metal(core) has always had its share of violence and fighting, it probably increased a hundred-fold within those years and spiraled out from there.
It's not entirely to blame for it, I'm not saying that, but people seem to get this ridiculous misconception that FSU has single-handedly ruined the music "scene" and that all the violence can be attributed to them. But the reality of it all is a lot of other elements tainted it all, and as a result people who were already there took it out on all the newcomers that really had no idea where they were and what it was all about
I know this seems to stray from the topic but, it is all similar. Instead of appreciating music for what it is, there are so many people out there that just simply like it because it fits the mold, it's the "new" trend, it makes them feel superior to certain counterparts because "they heard that band before they were cool" and **** like that.
Personally I enjoy some Tool stuff, largely because of the dissonant sound and really overall unparalleled style. While the music doesn't necessarily take a lot of talent to play, it's largely creative and original. That much I can appreciate about it, unfortunately most people just like them because it's weird, eccentric, and Hot Topic has 10 of their shirts on sale. :shakehead
so much for avoiding debate. haha

When I was a kid, I used to call up my "punk-rock" friends to let them know my dad decided to drive up there that Sunday... so hop on the wagon! It was great, we would all save up our money for those trips.
And Yes, I still go there and ALWAYS spend/buy more than I anticipated.
Music I'm listening to currently:
old Alkaline Trio (emo/depressing punk about beers and chicks), Avail (punk rock, hint of hardcore, rock and roll and a little "country flavor"), new Streetlight Manifesto (not too bad, ska... the real catch-22), Dillenger Escape Plan (Crazy pyscho hardcore/metal s***), Boy Sets Fire (80s rock meets modern hardcore), Flogging Molly (Dropkick Murphys with less punk and more folk),
old Incubus (rock dj mix before Limp Bizkit, all different stuff really), old Jimmy Eat World (Soft punk/emo. Songs about chicks. Listening to "Singles" album, music from before Bleed American). I know Brit mentioned them, I've been a long time fan myself. Still not a huge fan of the new CD though... a little too light. Saw them twice on tour recently, they have a good set list!,
OS101 (old-school hardcore/punk from jersey shore), Small Brown Bike (Indie hardcore/punk, sounds like Hot Water Music) Thursday (Punk/emo/melodic hardcore type). You guys were talking about the Gaslight Anthem (Bruce Springsteen meets Rancid, someone said? I like that, Maybe a Hot Water Music with more rock is a good comparison.) Awhile ago on another thread, and I thank you. I really enjoy them. I tried to get their CD at Vintange Vinyl but they were all out! So I bought the new streetlight instead.
So thats whats been in current rotation on the iPod, maybe I enlightened you to something

Yeah she still hasn't won me over. When they released that Eva single I really wasn't impressed and I haven't given the new album much of a chance. I might warm up to it over time but for now i'm just listening to the older stuff.
Mr.Krinkle 02-01-2008, 10:18 AM Since seeing them in Brooklyn last week, I've been pretty much exclusively listening to Neurosis, they really need to tour more than once every five years.
Dillenger Escape Plan (Crazy pyscho hardcore/metal s***),
They'll be on on Conan next week. That should be interesting. I loved Calculating Infinity and their EP with Mike Patton, wasn't a big fan of their latest stuff though.
If you like them check out Cephalic Carnage and Carbomb.

Yeah I know a pretty good amount about music, as it's something I'm extremely passionate about besides sports, but I have never listened to Alter Bridge.
But if you're looking for some melody and some great guitar work, check out Between The Buried and Me. They have some of the most talented guitar players out there that most people probably haven't heard of. The music is pretty eclectic too, it definitely covers a lot of the bases.

Check out the song "White Walls" I don't know if they have the whole song up or not but it's about 14 minutes long normally. But it definitely displays their guitar work skill and versatility.
fortheloveof666 02-01-2008, 01:25 PM Since seeing them in Brooklyn last week, I've been pretty much exclusively listening to Neurosis, they really need to tour more than once every five years.
They'll be on on Conan next week. That should be interesting. I loved Calculating Infinity and their EP with Mike Patton, wasn't a big fan of their latest stuff though.
If you like them check out Cephalic Carnage and Carbomb.
although Dillingers guitarists have incredible talents, I still gotta say
Cephalic >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dillinger.
and c'mon....DYINGGGGGGGGG WILL BEEEEEE THE DEAAAAAATH OF ME.
you gotta love that sense of humor. hahah

Haha, I especially love the way he sings that song too, first time I heard that I said, "Oh ***, Cephalic went all emo on me!!". Then Irealized the lyrics and just started laughing.
I saw them a few years ago at the NE Metalfest, they did a cover of the theme from King of the Hill, so they definitely have an odd sense of humor.

dude I thought the same thing. Relapse released that as a "single" to the new CD and I'm like "wow............this is NOT what I was expecting."
But then, as you said, I put together the lyrics and I'm like "oh yeah, people are definitely going to take this seriously....wait till they hear the rest of the CD."
those guys are nuts though. I've only managed to see them once though like...****, 4-5 years ago when they played the lounge at Krome. Sooooooo good though.

hands down my favorite band and probably the third best artist I've ever seen in concert (tough to top Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Bruce Springsteen in that category).

Lou's Koolaid 02-02-2008, 01:20 PM Yeah I know a pretty good amount about music, as it's something I'm extremely passionate about besides sports, but I have never listened to Alter Bridge.

yeah that whole song is great, but the end makes all the time pay off big. the guitarwork is sick.
agnespie 02-02-2008, 03:06 PM two similar Philly bands:
Reign Supreme - http://www.myspace.com/reignsupremehardcore
Blacklisted - http://www.myspace.com/blacklisted
I pretty much hate everything about Philly except the Cheesesteak and these bands. haha.
that new Blacklisted song is so good.
fortheloveof666 02-02-2008, 03:08 PM that new Blacklisted song is so good.
yes it is...and what made it even better was how pissed off Bannon got for the player link getting "leaked" 1 day in advance. :biglaugh:

I haven't been able to enjoy The Banner in a long time. I hate to sound like one of those typical dbags, but I haven't liked anything since that original EP on Warmachine.
Marked For Life is easily the best song they ever wrote, IMO. And I'm not even edge. haha. Well, at that, I guess neither are they.
But now since I haven't listened in forever, I had to put that **** on, so thanks.
agnespie 02-02-2008, 03:29 PM have you listened to The Wolf demo? I think the new Banner record will be real good.

I heard the song on the Myspace and it's alright but I dunno..I guess I'll have to hear more stuff to decide. It wasn't that bad though.
agnespie 02-02-2008, 03:39 PM yeah definitely worth checking out when it comes out, I think it's coming out in March? not sure.
unrelated note... is that a real photo of Brylin as your avatar? where can I find a bigger sized version?

yeah I'm definitely gonna listen once it gets out and see what I think. I always give them a shot, hoping they'll pull me back in, but it just hasn't happened.
The avatar isn't actual, if you look on the board for the photoshop thread it's in there in a larger size. It's just his face photoshopped onto Scott Baio's face. haha.

HEY MOOOOOM, I'M GOIN OUT TONIGHT, SO PUT MY CALLS ON HOLD/NAH, JOEY, NO FIGHTS TONIGHT, I'D BET SHE WISH I WAS
I'm sure Joey Southside and the guys in The Banner are nice enough guys - or even cool dudes w/ attitudes - who may or may not be posting on a message board and I know I tried and failed to really get into hardcore but these lyrics - wow. :biglaugh:

wow, a snip of a quote. let's hold it against a band. if that was the case, I think almost every band would be dismissed for a funny/corny line or two. but anyway, that song would drive the crowd crazy, crazy good way. if anything, I think The Banner writes very creatively. new stuff is killer.

I'm not trying to be mean, don't take it so seriously. You won't see me in the pit anyway.
