It's probably a little premature to be scoreboard watching in terms of making any kind of playoff implications. But why not, what else is going on?

Personally I've always preferred the win% since it accounts for games in hand.

This is the West, presumably ignoring today's early games:
| Team | GP | W %
1 | DET | 41 | 0.768
2 | SJS | 40 | 0.625
3 | VAN | 41 | 0.61
4 | MIN | 40 | 0.6
5 | DAL | 42 | 0.595
6 | CGY | 42 | 0.583
7 | STL | 38 | 0.566
8 | COL | 40 | 0.563
9 | ANA | 43 | 0.547
10 | CBJ | 41 | 0.537
11 | PHX | 39 | 0.526
12 | CHI | 40 | 0.513
13 | NSH | 39 | 0.513
14 | EDM | 42 | 0.452
15 | LAK | 42 | 0.381

So we're 9th right now. Dallas, surprisingly enough, has lost 4 in a row. SJ has jumped into 1st with a 5 game point streak, their last regulation loss was against us on the 22nd.

I'm not that concerned with games in hand right now, I am more concerned with that dreadful road string we have coming up. Plus the whole ppg thing is a little misleading because we have been significantly better record wise with Niedermayer back..

Games of note today: Detroit vs Chicago. Chicago has beaten Detroit in all 4 meetings so far this year.

Of note last night: San Jose takes over the Pacific Division lead with a win over Columbus. Edmonton wins yet another shootout to drop our pick to the number 4 overall.

Out of town: The golden boy is injured with a high ankle sprain. Seems like players really don't want to play in ASG. Luongo, Stastny, Crosby, Heatley.

The new low-scoring NHL took a hit tonight with a 10-1 game (Buffalo over Atlanta) and a 7-2 game (Carolina over Edmonton). Calgary has an un-we-need-to-have-bigger-nets like 5-1 lead over the Kings. Dammit LA, you need to win and place above our draft pick.

What's sad is if you go to TSN, there's like a gazillion pieces on Crosby's injury. Seriously, there's other players in the NHL.

Tonight was good for the Ducks. Florida, Carolina, Buffalo, and Tampa all win. Now Chicago needs to score in the 3rd to beat Colorado, and LA again proves to be of no help, losing 6-1 to Calgary in the 3rd period.

Stupid LA. And that Sanjaya Kopitar.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/25/Sanjaya_at_Seattle_Center.JPG/220px-Sanjaya_at_Seattle_Center.JPG

Other funny notes related to the blowouts. Atlanta pulled the starter, Hedberg, after 4 goals in 11 shots. Lehtonen lets in 3 goals in the 2nd period, and he gets pulled, so Hedberg plays the 3rd. I'm not sure I've ever seen a goalie get unpulled before.

Also, the two blown out teams, Atlanta and Edmonton, play each other next game. Does that mean it'll be like a 10-9 game where crappy defenses meet or a 1-0 game of inept offenses?

The Sharks have dropped 4 straight and will make it a tight three horse race down the stretch in the Pacific.

Edmonton will be a seller at the trade deadline. Once the Oilers sell off some more players, they will fall further back in the pack and giving us a much better pick.

They are playing well, and hopefully they continue to respond well to this epic road trip. I hope the joy of winning will help keep the wear and tear of the trip down and keep their energy up.

Good thing is, we have to play well down the stretch here, and its such a big advantage in the playoffs when you enter the playoffs on a high note (although the playoffs are a ways away)

Will Edmonton really be a seller? There's some awfully short-sighted fans who seem to be really focused on winning, not for winnings sake but just to avoid giving Anaheim a top pick. Fan pressure may prevent a sell off, even if it'd be better for the long term health of the franchise. They also don't really have any impending UFA of interest or importance to the team. Tarnstrom, Sanderson and Reasoner are the only UFAs. Losing those 3 isn't going to be that much of a loss.

Biggest potential drop off through selling UFAs that I can see are Tampa (Boyle, Prospal, Gratton), LA (Blake, Nagy, Stuart), Atlanta (Hossa, Holik, Recchi), Carolina (Hedican, Stillman, Commodore). Buffalo (Campbell), Washington (Kolzig) and Toronto (Sundin) have big sell off parts, but only 1.

i'm not too concerned with the games at hand....because that is assuming u'd have to win all those games...keep in mind..our ducks have 17 losses having played more games..there are teams like the flames and stars who have a game in hand with 17 and 18 losses respectively ....but look at it this way...they have to win that game in hand just to keep pace..dallas..which i'm hoping will lose tonite:yo: will still have a game in hand, BUT 19 losses...so it may be better to look at winning %...but then again...the way the ducks are playing..that % is just sky rocketing up :yo:

Only team whih is way behind in games that i can see, is St.Louis...but can they win all those games? and..besides...its St.Louis..they're not touching any of the top 3 seeds in the long haul

As this is the mishmash of stuff around the league thread... There's a thread on the Edmonton board talking about "do the oil intend to keep Pitkanen" thread.

It's not particularly interesting, but I did find one aspect quite humorously ironic. There's an oft-stated view that it's not worth paying Pitkanen big bucks because he's inconsistent and not proven enough. Penner who?

As it stands right now Penner is on pace for one more point than Todd Bertuzzi, in around 15 more games. Yes, I will take that top 5 pick thankyou.

On an even funnier note, I wouldnt put it past Lowe to not sell anything off at the deadline just to try and finish in the highest possible spot to spite Burke, further hurting his team's rebuild process.

Bert will surpass him as long as he stays healthy.

and No Lowe will not sell he's proven he has an ego as big as Burkes, even though what he should be doing is get rid of players he has no use for long term..then again they have no high picks to tank for.

Currently we're out of a playoff pace. If you estimate that we need 94 points to make the playoffs, we need to go on a .635 point pace. Which is better than we've played since Niedermayer returned (.614). Of course home ice would be nice, but I'm not sure it's realistically attainable.

Stuff around the NHL:

Toronto beat Detroit. Wow. Good news for our draft pick. And Cleary's out for 6-8 weeks with a broken jaw. He's really been a revelation for them, their 3rd highest forward scorer. That takes him out to just before the playoffs.

In Edmonton, the Oilers fans are complaining about how Penner didn't stick up for Hemsky when Regehr boarded him. And how he let up on a few hit opportunities on Regehr later. Ha. Remember when they talked about how Penner would be the power forward of the future and would bring physicality to the Oilers? Don't say we didn't tell them so.

Tonight's results don't look so good in relation to us, but they look pretty good in relation to our draft pick on the East. Atlanta, Florida, Toronto, Tampa, and NYI all picked up at least a point. Sadly, the bottom Western teams St. Louis and LA both lost.

We seem to be 6th in winning% in the West not including today's games. So that's an improvement.

Right, the Ducks would receive Vancouver's 3rd rounder in '09 if Shannon plays 41 games this season, which seems to be out of the question at this point.

Oh, and ignore the Edmonton fans on the main board. Penner is as lazy and inconsistent as ever. Their claims of improvement are only over fat, out of shape post-Cup Penner, not pre-Cup Penner. I think it's mainly (ha!) on the main board. There was one post on the Oilers board that described him as MIA and another said if he's only going to occupy space on ice, he should take a seat in the press box. Imagine that.

Well, it's the lesser of two evils, but I hope Edmonton can find a way to beat Dallas on Friday.

I think a big reason why Edmonton sucked so hard at the end of last year (man I cleaned up on vbookie with them) was that they totally lost heart with Smyth traded away. This year there's not as much reason to sell, and they never really had the leadership to lose. And they seemed to bond pretty well last game, where the massive fights might draw the team together, so they may actually be building heart.

I don't think the team can do very well, just because they're pretty weak to begin with and are wracked by injuries, but I don't really foresee a collapse like we'll see with Toronto, LA, and maybe Tampa.

So I can't comment on the game because I was watching our draft pick improve, but Montreal came back from a 5-0 deficit nearly halfway through the game to win 6-5 in the SO. Dayam.

Oh, and ignore the Edmonton fans on the main board. Penner is as lazy and inconsistent as ever. Their claims of improvement are only over fat, out of shape post-Cup Penner, not pre-Cup Penner. He's pretty much the same guy we know. Damn glad he's not being paid 4.25 for 5 years. Now if only we could get rid of our own lazy 4 million dollar guy...
Agree he looks like the same guy as last year. Very good some nights, very invisible others although I think he would have improved this year had he stayed with us and been with Getz and Perry all year. But he'll never carry a line and i'll take possibly 3 top 65 picks in a deep draft for a guy who will score under 50 points...

So far so good tonight. SJ lost again, the Isles and Caps are in OT which means they both move farther ahead of Edmonton, and Tampa is in OT bringing them closer to Edmonton.

I cant decide if I want Calgary or Dallas to win though....Dallas wins, then the division is farther off. Calgary wins and they are one point behind us.

Edit: And TB lost...bah.

What? Tampa was up 2-0, so I started watching the Caps game. And they lost? If only we had another Bryz to waive to them.

Be sure to root for Chicago.

Oh, and the semi-desired deadline pickup Comrie scored in the SO to give the Isles a win. Makes it more unlikely the Isles will be selling.

As much as I hate the Flames you have to root for them. You always need to root for the teams ahead of you. You can't worry about the teams behind you. Unless they are as far ahead as the Wings are.

I can't say i'm happy if either one of those teams win, but we really need one of those teams to win in regulation. They are tied right now so let's up someone scores soon.

Three games of concern tonight for Anaheim: Dallas vs Edmonton, Detroit vs Calgary, and Phoenix vs Colorado.

I cant decide if Id rather have Dallas or Edmonton win, so Im ok with either winning in regulation. The same goes for Colorado/Phoenix as they have the exact same amount of points with the exact same amount of games played. As for the other one, as much as I hate Detroit we arent going to catch them, so Id rather they beat Calgary.

Definitely want Detroit to win. The other game is not as clear. On the one hand, you want to catch Dallas, but on the other, the Preds are right on the tale of the Ducks. Wouldn't be mad either way as long as it ends in regulation (though probably would prefer if Nashville won).

Dallas is fortunately making the best of a heavy schedule so far. How the NHL has them playing 5 more games than San Jose at this point in the season is beyond me. So pretty much every team in hockey has some catching up to do in games played, though I'm thinking the slowed-down schedule Dallas has coming up will help with the return of Zubie and Boucher.....and whoever Dallas can get at the deadline as well. :thumbu:

Anyways, race for the Pacific title isn't over by a long shot, should be an exciting final stretch.

It doesn't bother me rooting for them at all either. I remember when I used to LOVE watching them lose (like in the '03-'04 season when they lost, what was it, the last 10 or so games of reg. season and missed the playoffs :naughty:) but now I think I got so used to them sucking and the disparity between the two teams has grown so large that it's kind of pathetic and comical in a sad way. Maybe if they were more of a threat but the rivalry doesn't have much lustre or stir much emotion in me right now at least. It is greater w/ other teams as of late (Sharks, Wings, Oilers--because of the feud between Burke & Lowe, etc.). I think most fans of both teams are waiting for a time when both teams are good at the same time so the rivalry means something again.

Meh. The Oilers have been hovering around .500 all year. It's never really changed. Even when they were 3rd from last, it was just like a 3-4 game losing streak after reaching .500, after which they slowly make it back up again.

We just have to hope some other teams string some wins together. Tampa, Florida, Atlanta, St. Louis, and LA are all slumping. At least Toronto is making a push.

I expected about a 6th overall since the beginning of the year, and have never seen anything that would make we want to change it.

In a way you kinda want that though because teams with players fighting for jobs tend to play harder at the end of the season, like St.Louis last year for instance was an incredibly tough out towards the end of the season. Teams like Phoenix for example will be a tough out at the end of this year. You actually want Edmonton playing teams like that rather than Det, Dal, at this point or later on in this season IMO.

Incindentally, my fiancee was at this game since her company has season seats. As long as it doesn't go to OT, there's no good/bad outcome for us. We have to cut our losses and hope that one team wins in regulation, although if the Sharks do, at least we still have a chance to play them while we catch up. However, the further away they get from us, the more likely we'll see that dreaded 4-5 matchup. We could always tumble to sixth, but sometimes that can backfire too. =\

If it was any other team besides the Oilers, I'd actually think they have a chance of making it to the playoffs. I believe in karma.

Dear Oilers fans:
**** off. In this thread we mock any and all teams. None of us are serious, and we don't give a damn what you have to say. We aren't saying this to anyone other than other Ducks fans. You don't need to defend the honor of your city/team/way of life.

I've never understand this board's bizarre xenophobic attitude to outside fans. It goes from posters all the way to moderators and I've never understood why everyone is so defensive considering out of all the NHL teams, you don't really take it like some do from opposing fans.

Are you kidding? I take major **** all the time because I'm a Ducks fan. People instantly think I'm some stupid bandwagon bro who's never touched ice in my life and wouldn't know a pad stack from a pancake stack. Not to mention that at the first sign of animosity between us and other users on this site, the first thing they do is fanbase bash (just ask Sens fans). Add to that the **** we've gotten over the past because of the Pronger incident (apparently we should be embarrased, because we=Colin Campbell), and I'd say we've got every right to be a little irritable when other fans harass us.

Fair enough in regards to Cup winning. I still don't think Vancouver has forgiven Alberta for the 80's. I've just seen a lot of topics that aren't very welcoming to outside guests. But you know what, this will just turn into that so I'll take your answer and believe you and leave it as that how about.

That's got more to do with the Pronger thing and its not being very conducive to civilized discussion. I think most of the time our threads are fairly welcoming to other fans. Of course, that changes quickly when people start to *****. Not you personally, but some people, it seems, have nothing better to do than troll.

And I've never understood some fans' bizarre thinking that people cracking jokes in a tucked away thread in a tucked away board requires them to come to "defend their honor." It's not like we're standing on a soapbox preaching that the Oilers should be moved to Houston and I've never understood why some people can't seem to differentiate a joke from an actual argument in an actual discussion.

Outside fans are welcome to provide serious discourse in serious topics. "Nuh uh, mine is bigger" and ignoring explicitly defined guidelines is not welcome.

Obobo you're making yourself look like a donkey...again. Get this straight as much as you may not give a damn what others have to say, your comments reflect the intelligence of your posts and the feeling may be mutual.

Just because you’re on the ANA board that doesn’t protect you from the HF boards rules of conduct.

I find that this board is not too friendly to other HF Posters. The Ducks boards means that anyone that wants to get involved in duck discussions is welcome to do so. It doesn’t mean that ONLY ducks fans are welcome. IT CALLED A PUBLUC FORUM.

This thread in particular is an out of town scoreboard thread. You would think that posters that actually watched the out of town games would be welcome to post? A comment was made about Penner, I provided input that he scored a big goal tonight. That’s a fact if you don’t want to hear that, ignore the post.

Obobo, hiding behing your computer and dropping scary F-Bombs doesn’t contribute much and is probably not as intimidating as you think.

So going by your statements, as free as you are to provide input, we're free to tell you to get lost. Especially in a thread where there isn't much serious discussion.

As for outsiders, I guess I should apologize for being so "unfriendly." I wouldn't want to scare them away, because mocking the dumb opinions of outsiders is a minor hobby of mine.

And really, the fact that you can't distinguish the difference between being "intimidating" and being "dismissive" is really all I need to know about the value of your opinions. But I'm glad you're feeling great about your team now that they're winning and feel like "getting involved" now, versus when your team was losing.

It's really odd how fans have the urge to defend their teams on our board. I seen our fans do it, but nobody does it as well as Oiler fans. There's a reason this is in the Ducks board and not in the main boards, a lot of the stuff we say in this thread is all in good fun. No need for fans to come jumping in here defending their team's honor.

Root for:

Nashville (Losing to Detroit)

Vancouver (scoreless with Edmonton)

Florida (tied with carolina)
Phoenix (not started, LA will probably **** us over)
