Big Phil 01-05-2008, 08:24 AM I heard Pierre McGuire mention this in yesterday's game vs. USA. Doughty to me has the style of Bourque/Potvin. Anyone else agree? I've seen him do some lovely rushes end to end and especially that coast to coaster where he assisted on Stamkos' goal in the Finland game. Defenseman like that are rare and with no disrespect to Stamkos I cant see why people have him head and shoulders above Doughty. I too see a lot of Bourque in Doughty.
Blind Gardien 01-05-2008, 09:08 AM I've been using the Bourque comparable all year, so I feel somewhat vindicated to hear a big shiny TV guy say the same thing. :) Mind you, basing it more on early-season OHL play, I had Doughty's earlier defensive solidity and his point shot presence on the Guelph PP as two big factors in the comparison, which are two aspects of his game that I don't think are quite as apparent at the WJCs as they are in the OHL.
Thom Yorke 01-05-2008, 09:26 AM He's sturdy for an 18 year old, he resembles borque in many ways, im excited to see how doughty fares in the NHL.
#11_THEBEST! 01-05-2008, 10:26 AM Is this another Pierre McGuire bashing thread? He said that he's similar to Bourque in some aspects right now......You never know how Doguhty were turn out to be.
Lessy 01-05-2008, 01:12 PM He's probably not going to be as solid defensively as Bourque but other than that it's a very good comparison. Even the way there built at 6'0 220ish is virtually the same.
Nordic 01-05-2008, 01:48 PM Isnīt that the bald dude from american idol.:teach:
;)
Fleury14 01-05-2008, 01:53 PM He seems like a smaller, more (offensively) aggressive version of Bouwmeester.
ranold26 01-05-2008, 01:53 PM Colorado has already retired Doughty's jersey.
brownman* 01-05-2008, 02:22 PM If only he didn't look like a chubbier Wellwood :sarcasm:
Goldthorpe 01-05-2008, 09:59 PM The first time I saw him, I thought he looked fat.
God Bless Canada 01-06-2008, 01:34 AM He's terrific, but comparing him to arguably two of the top five defencemen of all-time is a bit much. But what would you expect from Pierre? His comparisons are often rife with hyperbole.
Doughty has that Bourque/Lidstrom trait in that he has the potential to be both a dominant offensive and shut-down blue-liner. He can be the offensive catalyst while gobbling up big minutes against the team's top player. Very few defencemen in the history of the game could do that. But remember: we said the same thing about Scott Lachance when he entered the league in 1992. So let's not get ahead of ourselves.

iiLOL

I thought that Alzer reminded me alot of Bourque...but maybe that's more because Alzer seems to look and talk a lot like Ray during interviews...
As for Stamkos above Doughty, I have the same thought. I don't see why people would put Stamkos so high above Doughty. BTW, I thought that Doughty was much more mobile than Ray Bourque.
Dmen develop much slower than forwards and at the same draft eligible age, Doughty just won the tournament's best dman award while Stamkos wasn't even close to being the best forward even on his own team.
Even the Stamkos vs Tavares thing...I thought that Tavares outplayed Stamkos in every regard even if he isn't as flashy or as fast as Stamkos.
All those people who thinks that Stamkos is better is really just nitpicking on Tavares and finding artificial faults with Tavares' game just because he's been around so long a la Crosby vs Brule or Kessel from year's past. IMHO.

:biglaugh: hahaha nice

Is this always a bad thing to make those comparisons. What I mean is that everyone knows that every player isn't "The next Lemieux" "The next Stevens" "The next Bourque". But if a player has the attributes of these certain players, I don't think that it is out of line to compare their styles of play.
Declaring him a HOF candidate is way off base, but if he continues to progress I think that he definitely looks like he could be that type of player.

i think doughty will go higher than stamkos when its all said and done

Wow, now that i think of it thats a pretty accurate description! :biglaugh:
McNasty 01-06-2008, 10:51 PM Doughty reminds me of Marek Malik personally

wow if that's true Doughty has dropped huge in my hopes for him as a #1 D. Is he really that bad?
slumpy43 03-28-2008, 10:05 PM He was named second best defensive defensemen in his division in the OHL coaches poll.
chaosrevolver 03-29-2008, 10:31 PM He was named second best defensive defensemen in his division in the OHL coaches poll. That right there is why that poll shouldnt be taken seriously.
RUSqueelin 03-30-2008, 12:27 AM That right there is why that poll shouldnt be taken seriously.
why?
zetterberg40 03-30-2008, 03:38 PM it sickens me when people take a comparison to heart. "Comparing him to a 2-5th best defenseman all time is a little of a stretch."
They arent comparing a potential future prospect to a hall of famer, they are comparing STYLES of play..
Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.
