Steve Mason was traded this morning from his junior team.

What the hell is going on? Were they pressured to make the trade or something? Trading the guy on the morning of the most important game of his career seems like a dick thing to do. They couldn't have waited a few days to make the trade?

TSN just said it hasn't been officially announced but that word of the trade has leaked out.

Here's their story from earlier:

Good timing, though, huh?

It's either going to distract him or motivate him even more. I'm already too nervous to watch. :help:

Why a new thread about Mason? I´m starting to be tired about this guy! You could put in this in one of the other threads!

What's Hunter thinking? Couldn't wait 2 days to announce it?

I get it, but nice timing.

Alberta Yote

He didn't announce it, it was leaked. And it's been a rumour for awhile so it shouldn't affect or surprise Mason. Hey, he's going to the top rated team in Canadian junior, he should be good with that.

No excuses.

It's tough to keep the trade from leaking when Kitchener healthy scratches Varone and Tarasuk last night. Not only that, they didn't even take the bus to Niagra.

My understanding is that Deboer took them to London last night (to meet Mark, and to give Pete a chance to see the two drafted yet-unreported American U17's).

I'm a happy, happy Kitchener fan today!

Trahans, London will love Tarasuk and Varone. Tarasuk is a forward who has switched to D. Good shot from the point, and learning his position well. Varone is a lot like Azavedo - small, but doesn't play small. He has good speed and good hands. He has a tendency to turn his body to the boards, and he's going to have to learn not to do that.

Varone and Kadri are both late birthdays, therefore not eligible until the 2009 draft. It wouldn't surprise me if neither gets drafted. Varone is a solid two-way player, very small though. Kadri is a skilled offensive player who's a good playmaker but also very small. Tarasuk's a valuable player because he can be a good third-line right winger, and was drafted as a defenseman so he can fill in on the back end as well. It seems to me, the Knights didn't get as much for Mason as I though they would. His return wasn't even equal to what Kingston got for Emmerton.

http://www.kitchenerrangers.com/NewsStory.aspx?ID=1152

Kitchener, ON: Head coach and General Manager Peter DeBoer announced that the OHL has approved today a trade between the Kitchener Rangers and the London Knights.

In the deal the Knights send 19 year old goaltender Steve Mason to the Rangers. The Rangers send Phil Varone, Steve Tarasuk and a 2nd, 3rd and 4th round priority selection in 2011 and a 2nd round in the 2012 OHL Draft

I don't know much about Steve Mason other than what i have seen in the WJC so far so i would like to know :

Does this guy has a future as a starter in the NHL ? I know that he was drafted by Columbus (correct me if i'm wrong) but i haven't heard much about him.But then again i haven't followed the Knights very much since i'm more of a Q follower so i'm kind of uninformed on many OHL/WHL players.....

Good to hear, what about draft status? Where do you see them being drafted if at all?

What about Kadri?

Looks like London is loading up for the next few years again.

Kadri reminds me a bit of Corey Perry in his first/second year. Kadri obviously watched him a lot as a junior Knight, and has adopted the toe drag that works periodically. He needs to add muscle, but I think he'll be a good one.

From a Columbus perspective, a lot of us think he's going to probably get put into the 'Cuse next year, then brought in to be the backup for LeClaire after some AHL experience. He played very well at camp and was the last player sent back to his junior club. He started several of our pre-season games and played very well.

I suspect he'll replace Freddy Norrena as the "1B" goaltender and should Pascal go down again or something else come up, I could easily see Mason becoming the permanent starter in Columbus in the next four or five years.

Mason will be headed to Columbus (well actually at least a game in St. Louis) before he moves to Kitchener

I believe he is out for the season with a knee injury if I'm not mistaken.

Norrena - Healthy
Leclaire - Day to Day
Popperle - Knee, out for season
Lacosta - Ankle, long term.
Mason - Only other goalie under NHL contract.

Current Syracuse goalies
Goehring - One way AHL contract.
Munro - One way AHL contract.

Total mercy trade. I talked to Dale Hunter the day after it happened and I guess it was supposed to go down before the tourney, but there was some difficulty in getting all 3 teams on board.
