A hot Swedish team against a hot Russian team. The Russian team might be considered favourites in this match, although they've had some defensive troubles, as have Sweden.
A very open game, that should be entertaining to watch. Russia have the individually good players, Sweden has the collective.
The game is played in the Čez Arena as usual, in Pardubice, Czech Republic.
CMacdonald 01-02-2008, 09:10 PM I'll take Sweden, and I'll also take Tiger Woods wife's twin at the same time.
The wedding gift should be good.
Fish on The Sand 01-02-2008, 09:13 PM I like Russia here. History suggest Russia will make it. They dominated the Czech's today in a way nobody else did in the tournament and they are the only team to hold a candle to the Americans thus far. Many will point to the Kazakhstan and Switzerland scored, but this is a team that just wakes up for good teams. Case and point the USA/Finland games. Sweden has shown they can score in bunches, but their defence has been questionable at best and the only good team they have played scored 3 goals and is an offensivly challenged team. Sweden won that game, but if they can't improve defensivly Russia will light them up, they are not Canada, they can score. That being said I predict a 4-2 win for Russia.
Chimp 01-02-2008, 09:18 PM Russia dominating Czech Republic isn't a game I put much weight into. Sweden comfortably won against the Czechs while spending almost an entire period in the penalty box in one of the most onesided reffed games I've seen in years.
dmacgreg37 01-02-2008, 09:20 PM Gotta say, I've thought the Swedes were good from the beginning this year, and I think they win by 2 goals. Let's say 5-3 or 4-2?
gorrillaunit18 01-02-2008, 09:28 PM I don't know who's going to win!!! :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:
Russia. Probably. Hopefully. More Likely. Definitely.
Westcoasthabsfan 01-02-2008, 11:48 PM Hopefully Sweden can take this one and Canada can get by the States to set up the rematch.... this time for all the marbles.....

You mean the battle where the idiotic Karl XII commanded a fine group of soldiers which where terribly outnumbered already from the get-go and had lost the battle before it even began? Something is telling me that we will be outnumbered tomorrow as well. Russia will likely create enough buzz that will result in many, many, many penalites...
Russia wins, 4-1.

Well, that's not the entire truth. The Swedish army started with 60.000 troops, but the Russians performed the classic scorched earth tactics and destroyed their own land in front of the opposing army, so they starved. They made the attack because they were desperate and Swedish armies had made decisive victories with inferior numbers before.

Chimp 01-03-2008, 01:33 PM Narva wasn't important, Poltava put Sweden out of European Affairs for good... Tomorrow Russia will beat them again probably 5-2...
Well, if continuing the historical discussion, Narva could have been of more importance, because Russia had no material for a standing army left, no officers and no trained people.
As for the fall of the Swedish empire, it was only a matter of time. Too many enemies (the war started with 5 states attacking at once), too much territory, too small population to say the least and not a strong economy enough were too many factors against it. The only factor speaking for that empire was the perhaps best trained army in the world at the time, but there were simply not enough people to train. ;) As an example, at the end of the 30 year war, the Swedish army consisted of as little as 5% Swedish regulars because of lack of manpower to fill in reserves. The rest were mercenaries and allies.

Canada 2,50

There you have it. One of Russia's greatest leaders and one of the modern world's most chronically-injured and ridiculously-talented Swedish hockey players is, in fact, the same man.
If that doesn't prove we're all one, I don't know what will. Somebody get some Kumbaya going, por favor.
I don't dare to predict, to close to call IMHO. As for the Great Northern War - well, most ppl would agree that this is probably the best thing that has ever happened to Sweden.

Russia's goalie will score 14 goals and 28 assists breaking many records and being named Tournament MVP. He also will have 101 PIM and be banned from hockey for life because of a stick-swinging incident against his own defesneman for giving up 105 breakaways.

no, it isn't. Russia is the team being underrated if you honestly feel they have no chance. Russia almost always makes the finals despite not always performing well in the preliminary round. The Russian psyche is one that does not always take lesser teams seriously until it actually matters. We have seen it time and time again, and I suspect this year will be no different. Sweden is a good team, but they can't possibly up their game from where it is, where as we know Russia can given the talent on their roster.

Anyway, let's take this discussion somwhere else, these kids that play today have nothing to do with the Great Northern War. :)
STHLM* 01-04-2008, 05:24 AM The Russians are overated and the Swedes are underated, but it will be the Swedes who wins of that. Russia has all to lose but Sweden has all to win!
Yes, underate Sweden, that is what our guys need!
just like the war of 1808, only better.
hmm, Russia kind of ruled that war, but Sweden won the last battle in Svensksund and forced a good peace for them in 1809. Sweden expected to loose everything north of Sundsvall, and was prepaired to go everything north of Umeå, Russia onlt wanted Tornio and got it.
:)
So how does that transform to a hockey game?
Russia dominates the game but Sweden wins?
Quite frankly the Russians don't play a good team game. That shouldn't work against a team that is on the same planet talent wise, and plays a good team game.
However, I think Russias blueline kind of have been underrated so far. They have some D's that have been really solid. They have 2-3 guys who aren't all that high touted/hyped, but defenitly ranks in the top 10 in the tourney in terms of talent.
With the offensive fire power they got, and the the individual skill on the blueline, they still got the ingridients to be extremely dangerous; despite not having that team game.
I think this game could go either way. Probably would have a slight edge to the Russians.
Poltava was the decisive battle and you know it...You also know that Russia almost always beats Sweden so tomorrow 5-2 Russia!!!
Ahh, Russian are Swedish settlers in the end anyway! ;)
Thom Yorke 01-04-2008, 07:19 AM wow, i never realized what a good matchup this is. 4-1 Swedes; but russians keep sweden on thier feet entire game

You are mixing up the wars. Svensksund happened in 1790. The Finnish war was a disaster for Sweden, ergo the conclusion from the analogy is incorrect.

Yeah, as a team I don't think they play a good defensive team game -- at all.
But their talent as 6 individuals on the blueline is top notch in this tournament IMO. They often wins big individual battles 1 on 1 and along the boards and can create dangerous transitionplays off that.

littleD 01-04-2008, 10:10 AM Sweden get the first PP of the game.
Jimmi Jenkins 01-04-2008, 10:11 AM 30% PP for the Swedes, wow that's impressive.
littleD 01-04-2008, 10:13 AM Two offsides on the PP, about as much as Sweden has done so far.
Jimmi Jenkins 01-04-2008, 10:13 AM Can anybody tell me if Maxim Mamin has been drafted? If so, by who?
This past year by Columbus, 3rd round I think. Soild pick imo.
All I Ever Wanted 01-04-2008, 10:14 AM ugh, so close.
BBKers 01-04-2008, 10:15 AM Any feeds?
Jimmi Jenkins 01-04-2008, 10:16 AM Pierre Maguire was right, Sweden looks uptight and nervous. They need to relax and play their game.
The Ref seem to be letting these teams play, that's good to see.

If Sweden play a "Canadian" style of hockey game we will win.
We are stronger and more physical than the Russians and we have to use that. We also have to annoy them and irritate them... looking at a Ulf Samuelsson hockey instruction video before the game would have been a great idea. ;-)
Russians are always fast, technical and have great counterattacks, it's very difficult to beat them trying to overskill them with their own type of game.
Of course Russians will go physical as well but it will only give us many powerplay opportunities. Because Russians can't handle that type of game as well as we can.
This is only my whish and dream... since we are nice polite swedes I don't think our coach will follow my recommendation. ;-)
Caged Wisdom 01-04-2008, 10:19 AM The fact that a player on the Swedes has the last name Eklund makes me shocked anyone would cheer for them :sarcasm:
BBKers 01-04-2008, 10:19 AM Thanx guys (or girls) 4 the feed info. Mucho appreciado:handclap:

Thanks for this. Great feed.
littleD 01-04-2008, 10:28 AM Not all that much going this period for either team.
Jimmi Jenkins 01-04-2008, 10:28 AM Hedmon(sp) is going to be a star, I love that kid's tools.
Can anybody tell me if Maxim Mamin has been drafted? If so, by who?
not sure, but he had a solid open ice hit on Hedman, who is about 6 inches taller and 20 lbs heavier than him..
Buffalo87 01-04-2008, 10:29 AM This past year by Columbus, 3rd round I think. Soild pick imo.
You sure? Maxim Mayorov was taken by Columbus in the 3rd Round this past year. I can't find Mamin anywhere.
The fact that a player on the Swedes has the last name Eklund makes me shocked anyone would cheer for them :sarcasm:
Eklund is a swedish lastname so "your" Eklund has to have swedish relatives. ;-)
dmacgreg37 01-04-2008, 10:31 AM Mamim is an undrafted 19 year old.

Predatore 01-04-2008, 10:31 AM IMO Sweden is pretty much outplaying Russia in this first period, despite not having so many major scoring chances. Looks good so far.
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 10:31 AM both teams look a little norvous..
littleD 01-04-2008, 10:32 AM IMO Sweden is pretty much outplaying Russia in this first period, despite not having so many major scoring chances. Looks good so far.
Cherepanov just getting abused in the corners.
Penalty to Sweden upcoming.
Kaizer 01-04-2008, 10:33 AM Cherepanov is so good in corners...
wow Cherepanov seemed to to single-handedly get that PP and just fought for almost half a minute for that puck..
littleD 01-04-2008, 10:33 AM Where was the Russian penalty on that?
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 10:34 AM Interesting call on Bodrov....
Anton Volchenkov 01-04-2008, 10:34 AM What a useless ref.
Russia get a penalty after the Swedish guy punched the Russian in the face!
Predatore 01-04-2008, 10:34 AM wow, very nice play by Berglund. should have been a goal :)
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 10:35 AM Wow what a chance for Swedes...
Jimmi Jenkins 01-04-2008, 10:35 AM These teams are getting more comfortable, and things are staring to open up.
daikan 01-04-2008, 10:36 AM I think the Swedes improved as the period went. Pretty good period.
entertaining first period for sure..
Russia has skill but don't seem to be to consistently dangerous..
squishy 01-04-2008, 10:37 AM Horrible call on Bodrov with those matching minors. He didn't do anything besides stand there and get shoved.
Chimp 01-04-2008, 10:38 AM Ferocious backchecking and forechecking by the Swedish forwards in the 1st period. They gave the Russians nothing for free and stole the puck in the neutral/ offensive zone numerous times.
Sweden had the puck possession most of the time, which they're very comfortable with.
Ha ha that call on Bodrov :biglaugh: should be 5:3 PP
Nordic 01-04-2008, 10:39 AM Patrick Berglund is the second coming of Mats Sundin:teach:
All penalties have been pretty cheap.
Let the guys play.
Hagelin skates like a man possessed, hehe..
What´s up with americans cheering for the ruskies?
REMEMBER THE COLD WAR!!!;)
VladNYC 01-04-2008, 10:44 AM HORRIBLE Play by team Russia. If they play like they have the swedes will run away with this. Only 2 shots for Russia in the 1st! WTF?
Jimmi Jenkins 01-04-2008, 10:44 AM OT: Those American Idol promos are TERRIBLE, argh

Here is what I think.. If Russian gets this kind of chance (I am talking about SH chance Swedes had in the end) it's in the net.. Could be the difference in this game.
Slick Nick 01-04-2008, 10:47 AM Impressed with Sweden's defenisve game. Hope Russia wakes up in the second.
daikan 01-04-2008, 10:50 AM OT: Those American Idol promos are TERRIBLE, argh
The Godfather promos? Yes, they are.
Gozer 01-04-2008, 10:51 AM Ha ha that call on Bodrov :biglaugh: should be 5:3 PP
Nothing in that situation warranted a 5 v 3 pp.
Hedman so close..
Nazgullah 01-04-2008, 10:52 AM I like Mamin. Do he get regular ice time with Metallurg Magnitogorsk?
Classic Tammy 01-04-2008, 10:52 AM Hedman with a nice move
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 10:52 AM Nice save by Russian goalie...
Hedman "twerked" a Russian d-man
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 10:53 AM Swedes looking good... block shots, block passing...
HORRIBLE Play by team Russia. If they play like they have the swedes will run away with this. Only 2 shots for Russia in the 1st! WTF?
Looks to me like Russia is trying to play for the counterattack (their strength) and Sweden's playing for possession (their strength), so if Sweden manages to avoid dangerous turnovers as they have in the first, Russia's going to have to go after it a bit more.
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 10:55 AM Dubrovsky looks good so far.
Anton Volchenkov 01-04-2008, 10:55 AM PP Time.
Anton Volchenkov 01-04-2008, 10:56 AM Horrible shot. Deserved a goal
dmacgreg37 01-04-2008, 10:57 AM I love the yearly Gord Miller stating that "if they played the 2001 Gold Medal Game in my back yard, I"d close the blinds and tell them to keep it down"....every year, same thing, and I love it everytime.
Easily entertained I guess.
Cherepanov seems to always have his feet moving when there is a offensive zone chance. also in this game seems like the puck is magnetically attracted to his stick..
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 10:58 AM Passing is waaaaaaaaaay off for Russians...
Kaizer 01-04-2008, 10:58 AM Why are these referees always falling near the puck, blocking the puck, blocking players etc... :shakehead
Muscle Bob 01-04-2008, 10:58 AM I like Mamin. Do he get regular ice time with Metallurg Magnitogorsk?
He played only 9 games from 40 so far.
bogans 01-04-2008, 10:59 AM How come Anisimov has not been on the ice in the second period??
Nevermind, there he is, why is he not on their power play at all?
Dubrovsky looks good so far.
Spokoino, Masha, Ya - Dubrovsky! :)
pierreification 01-04-2008, 11:00 AM How come Anisimov has not been on the ice in the second period??
He's getting 4th line minutes for some reason
Jimmi Jenkins 01-04-2008, 11:01 AM He played only 9 games from 40 so far.
That could be the funniest Crosby Avatar I've ever seen.:biglaugh:
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:01 AM Why are these referees always falling near the puck, blocking the puck, blocking players etc... :shakehead I saw that... You would think on bigger ice you can pick your nose and not interfere.
Ok, we need a goal now.
Sometimes Sweden dominate a game totally without being able to score, it has happened many times in the past and it makes me sick every times it happens.
Nazgullah 01-04-2008, 11:02 AM He played only 9 games from 40 so far.
Ah. Looks like he have some tools to be a good player, though. He seems to be defensive minded?
Slick Nick 01-04-2008, 11:02 AM Chaaaaaaiiibuuuuuuuuuu ........................ ...
**** Filatov just missed a great play.
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:03 AM Ooooooooooooooooooooooo.... man... If Cherepanov would get the puck in that position..
Nazgullah 01-04-2008, 11:05 AM He seems to be defensive minded?
Or maybe not. I just noticed he´s the worst player in the russian team with -2 in the statistics. :D
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:06 AM Swedes dominating this game.
Slick Nick 01-04-2008, 11:06 AM Wow... so many turnovers for Russian D...
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:07 AM Wow... so many turnovers for Russian D...
Dubrovsky looks good...
Predatore 01-04-2008, 11:08 AM Russia starting to play better now, IMO. Some decent forechecking.
Predatore 01-04-2008, 11:09 AM Pääjärvi seeing shifts for Sweden now, btw
Slick Nick 01-04-2008, 11:09 AM Swedes dominating this game.
Russia's having a decent 2nd period so far, aside some defensive brainfarts.
Muscle Bob 01-04-2008, 11:09 AM He seems to be defensive minded?
Yep, at least this is what he said in his interview.
Russia is now creating something
Neblod Zin 01-04-2008, 11:10 AM I have bad feeling, that even if the Sweden had dominated this game, just one chance to Russians could be enough to win them the game. Too many lost chances already for Sweden.
two pretty scorching shots by Russia.. and now a PP for them..
What is Motin doing in this tournament?
I thought he was better then this.
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:11 AM Russia starting to play better now, IMO. Some decent forechecking. very true.. for the last 5 min at least 5-6 shots on goal and now going on PP...
Lets go Russia... Calling for a PP goal here. :yo:
Slick Nick 01-04-2008, 11:11 AM Dubrovsky looks good...
stop jinxin it....
PP comming up.
Pääjärvi seeing shifts for Sweden now, btw
16 years old. the youngest ever to play for Sweden.. pretty cool.. had a nice shift there.
Russia's having a decent 2nd period so far, aside some defensive brainfarts.
pretty bad farts..
bogans 01-04-2008, 11:12 AM There has got to be some truth to the rumor that McGuire was talking about with Nemchinov having a problem with Cherepanov. His line is really the only line out there producing and yet he does not get top line minutes or much time on the power play. This is shockingly bad coaching
stop jinxin it....
Calm down, Masha...:)
that was a pretty weak 1st PP unit for the Russians
much better "2nd unit"..
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:14 AM Hit the post.. nice chance.. Why is Russian head coach put Cherepanov on 2nd PP unit.. ?
stop jinxin it....
PP comming up.
molchat'.

While I agree, it's usually their line that draws the PP (as they are the line that is out there producing), and therefore, they often act as the 2nd PP unit. Cherepanov-Anisimov-Filatov is a dangerous unit for sure.
bogans 01-04-2008, 11:15 AM so Nemchinov FINALLY puts Anisimov, Cherepanov and Filatov out there together and they have about four chances in the ten second shift, I'm calling for a Russian firing soon after this WJC.
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:16 AM Was Beglund drafted?
Hit the post.. nice chance.. Why is Russian head coach put Cherepanov on 2nd PP unit.. ?

dmonk 01-04-2008, 11:19 AM Poor Swedes.... Tried so hard and now are trailing because of the softie.
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:20 AM lol at that slash...
Kaizer 01-04-2008, 11:22 AM good comment by canadian announcer (Gord Miller?): "slaaaaaaaash?!?"
Was Beglund drafted?
Which one?
BleedBlue44 01-04-2008, 11:23 AM Was Beglund drafted?
if you're talking about Patrik Berglund.. no. 15 for Sweden... then yes.. 25th overall St. Louis Blues 2006
Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:23 AM Which one? The kid who had a SH chance in the end of the 1st..
Did I spell it right?
Kaizer 01-04-2008, 11:24 AM The kid who had a SH chance in the end of the 1st..

Berglund, drafted by Blues already.
Filatov to Tampa. I insist. :))
Slick Nick 01-04-2008, 11:25 AM Is Sayustov available for the up comming draft? I'd take a chance on him...
Sweden is playing like in Slovakian game. Russia is lucky.
Still have a hope though.
OvechkinDomination* 01-04-2008, 11:27 AM It's going to be a great third period. I'm interested in seeing who Canada will be playing in the Gold Medal game.
NYRantLftyC19 01-04-2008, 11:28 AM Filatov to Tampa. I insist. :))
He would look really nice playing with Cherry and Anisimov for the Rangers too.. hopefully they do what they can to get him. We need scoring prospects too!
Also, Patrick Berglund (?) has been one of the best players in the entire tournament, just awesome watching him! He loks like he'll have no problem jumping to the NHL.
Nordic 01-04-2008, 11:29 AM Wow, Hedman seems like a very charming guy, very down to earth.
He speaks and carries himself almost like another guy from Ö-vik, Peter Forsberg.
And his biggest rolemodel is....Scott friggin Niedermayer....***!!;)
Sweden was the best team in the first period, Russia in the second. The only difference is that they capitalized.
Next goal is crucial.

Hey guys! You've already got Cherepanov and Anisimov. Isn't that enough for you? :) We could have drafted Cherepanov if we had not traded our first pick(#16)...ehh...But this time, if it is not Stamkos, then Filatov. Definitely!

Honestly.. Cherepanov did not look very special this WJC...
I was very high on his last year. He looked great!
Honestly.. Cherepanov did not look very special this WJC...

He does not have a lot of points, but he is still very good for his team. And dont forget that he was sick before the tournament and missed the first game.
squishy 01-04-2008, 11:39 AM Honestly.. Cherepanov did not look very special this WJC...
I agree. And despite what Pierre Maguire says, it has nothing to do with how much ice time he has or hasn't gotten, or any silly feud he thinks is going on between him and Nemchinov.
All that said, I think Cherepanov's looked better today than he has in the past few games.
Jimmi Jenkins 01-04-2008, 11:43 AM I don't think Maguire is giving the Russian enough credit, they are playing Sweden's game at them and it's working.
The russian net is to small we cant hit it for god sake.:shakehead
The shot was not even close...
once again. missing the net.

Same here, last year he was much more exciting, but he has been lookin better. And i've been impressed with his sneakiness in getting to the man with the puck alot, and he seems like he has good hockey sense being in good places... I think he definetly has the tools to be a good player, and he hasn't looked lazy or disnterested, like a Yashin or Samsonov type...
Classic Tammy 01-04-2008, 11:49 AM Wow the Russians are dropping like flies.

Kaktus 01-04-2008, 11:51 AM the russian player. How the hell was he faking it? Get a life...
Slick Nick 01-04-2008, 11:53 AM blja.....
daikan 01-04-2008, 11:53 AM How the hell was he faking it? Get a life...
I think he's referring to the play where the refs blew the whistle when a Russian was lying on the ice (and Sweden had possession). And where the Russian got up seemingly effortless when the whistle had blown. I dunno though.
dmonk 01-04-2008, 11:54 AM ah... that was a dumb penalty to commit
NYRantLftyC19 01-04-2008, 11:54 AM I think he definetly has the tools to be a good player, and he hasn't looked lazy or disnterested, like a Yashin or Samsonov type...
