ClericMercenaryAgent 01-02-2008, 03:10 PM I was just looking through the leading scorer's and saw that Tavares is listed with only one assist and 4 points for the tourney. Now I know he has more than one assist as I've seen him assist on at least 3 goals. What's going on? Now I'm wondering if there's any other cases of this?
littleD 01-02-2008, 03:41 PM Don't really remember many Tavares assists. Which goals did he assist on?

Before the game they showed his stats and it was 1 assist for the tourney

I looked through all of Canada's game boxscores just now, and I only counted one assist for Tavares. I did find one more goal that he scored than what is listed in the leading scorers list (it doesn't look like the stats from yesterday's game against Finland are included on that list yet).
However, according to the boxscores, he only has one assist. Maybe some of the assists that you saw of his earlier were changed to another player later?

If this isn't sarcastic, I'm embarassed for you.
The Scouting Report 01-02-2008, 04:12 PM According to Hockey Canada he has 4G 1A through 5GP
Goalin' Crazy UK 01-02-2008, 04:13 PM He has a great shot, doesn't skate, doesn't back check, won't tie anyone up, won't go near the boards. I won't deny he has an ability to be in the right place at the right time, and definitely finishes, so he will be a goal scorer, but not a hockey player. Now he is only 17 so this may all change, I am stating how he has played this tourney, OH THAT GUY IS PAST ME I WILL COAST UNTIL THE OTHERS DO THEIR THING;O)

You should watch the games then. This is one of the most inaccurate posts I've ever seen on this site.
Goalin' Crazy UK 01-02-2008, 04:20 PM My comments come from watching every game. Like I said he looks good scoring.
I suppose that if I don't just regurgitate the media spew my comments will be unpopular???
What ever.....

I think it was Giroux's goal against sweden.
The Scouting Report 01-02-2008, 04:27 PM Yeah I also thought he had 2 assists going into today's game, but that has obviously been changed.

Its not just in the WJC but if you look in the OHL this year forget his points for a second and check out his outstanding +/-. He's marvelous in that aspect. His game will become more well rounded and I'll admit there are more defensive players on the team but he's far from a liability on the ice

Being the best player on a semi-final team usually means you've played a pretty good tournament. I thought the kid has performed damn good myself, and I'm sure most Canadian fans will agree with me. He's the only Canadian player consistantly creating offense, and he has earned every second of ice-time he's received. If you think finishing is all this kid is bringing to the table after watching the first 5 games, you're sadly mistaken my friend.

I disagree with most of your initial post, but the backchecking stuff was very true in the round robin. The kid didn't see his own end the entire 4 games, granted for the frist two, he didn't see much of either end, as he was plastered to the bench.
However, today, he made a key play just inside the Canadian blueline in the 3rd period with the Canadians leading 3-2. If you have the game Tivo'd or on tape, go to the 16 min. mark of the 3rd period. He comes below the hashmarks on the boards, and along with the Dman, gets the puck out, with the Fins. pressing. I know it's one example, but he's improved his 2-way play a great deal throughout the trouney.

Libertine 01-02-2008, 06:32 PM I think it was Giroux's goal against sweden.
I thought he should have had an assist on that goal, but Turris was given the assist.

I think it was the 3rd goal against Sweden and I remember wondering at the time too why Tavares didn't receive the assist?
He was the one who made the pass, a kind of spin around behind the back to I guess it was Giroux in front of the net. If I remember correctly that is the one I was thinking about, but who cares, it's only one assist.

I think it was because the goalie technically made the save, and then the rebound was banged in. In these tourneys, they are a lot stingier with assists than in NHL or NA junior where there are 2 assists on almost every goal. In IIHF tourneys, it's often 1 or no assists. I'm surprised that Turris, who took the shot got one for that matter. It was Tavares passing to Turris, and then Giroux banged home the rebound.
Again, who really cares, but I've noticed that over the years.
ClericMercenaryAgent 01-02-2008, 10:41 PM Hmmm, yea, I was pretty sure the Giroux goal was assisted by Tavares, but apparently they gave it to Turris.
This wasn't a pro Tavares thing, it was more a "huh...coulda sworn I saw him score more points, wonder if they are screwing over any other players" type deal.
Oh well, thanks for all the help guys.
The Scouting Report 01-03-2008, 12:55 AM You should, because he's right
I've seen Tavares play over 150 games live since his minor midget days, and I know that people are very wrong with some of the things they say about him from watching him on TV a few times.

If the IIHF is so much stingier with assists, then how come JVR and another guy had assists on a Wilson goal where the puck was in the possession of a Finn (Wärn) after JVR played it along the boards and Wilson stole it from Wärn and scored. Two assists on a goal that should have (and would have in most leagues) no assists.
I don't think it's about the IIHF. Some officials in Europe might be a bit tighter with those, or some players just know how to beg for them better. That's how Jan Hrdina made a lot of his points here in Finland. Never really did anything on the ice, but begged for assists on goals he had nothing much to do with.
I think they should always check those on video after the game. I thought they did that with +/- stats already. Not that stats are that important, but why keep them if they're not accurate?

I agree that it is an individual official thing, but in IIHF IN GENERAL, it is much tighter with assists. I bet if you add up the assists per goal of the last 5 WJHC + 5 IHWC adn compare it to the last 5 seasons of NHL, you'll find the numbers to be right around 1.0 on IIHF goals, and around 1.50 or so on NHL goals, probably higher. I'm too lazy, buf if anybody has the time, go for it.

Yeah I did see that and if I was just judging his tournament performance only on the Sweden game I wouldn't be as critical. Unfortunately I don't watch any OHL hockey and this has been my first chance to watch Tavares. Maybe I hyped him too much in my mind, maybe my expectations are too high as he is only 17??? I am big enough to admit if I am wrong, my comments came strictly from the WJC games.
Guess I am wrong? Who knows, I always want Canada to do well, but this team hasn't impressed and Tavares has scored goals but not impressed elsewhere? Hopefully he changes my opinion in the next two games!
