This is one of those games, where I don't want either team to win. Normally, I guess I'd hope for a Czech win, but if Russia wins, I'm assuming Canada/USA will be the later semi-final and I won't have to get up at 6:30 am again. So, I guess I will half-heartedly say "let's go russia".

therealdeal
01-02-2008, 02:35 PM
Game seems like it lacks intensity, maybe its just because of all the calls.

Both teams seem a little selfish to me, twice on the powerplay Russians tried to go 1-4 through the middle and obviously lost it both times, then on the Czech powerplay Voracek finds himself 1-3 on a 2 man advantage rather than passing it.

I don't know, just my quick take.

Chimp
01-02-2008, 02:36 PM
Yeah, the Czechs won't get further in this tournament with such awful PP. They can't generate enough offense 5 on 5 either to cover it up. The refs continue to back the Czechs up in game after game (a noisy home crowd helps), but that last call vs. the Russian really looked like a dive combined with holding the Czech player's stick. One can wonder how that stick ended up in the Russian player's armpit though.

Why is it that Russia always gets more penalties from the IIHF refs than the team they are playing against (especially if the other team is an elite team too)? I don't remember the last time Russia had more powerplay than the other team if Russia was playing against a quality team.

Unlucky, but the Russians don't need that goal. They'll win anyway.

I like Cherepanov's style, constantly circling the opposing net. Exactly the kind of player Rangers need (even if they have Drury and Avery).

The camera angle they showed was very deceptive then, cause you can clearly see a lot of white between the puck and line

Though Eurosport 2 commentator is hilarious...

Shot that hit post to post, no goal. First he said "that's a goal, I'm certain";

1st replay: "look, how the puck clearly is over the line"

2nd replay: "yeah, there it is, look at the net at the left post"

3rd replay: "Post to post, yes - but remember that the camera is positioned in an angle relative the goal line etc." :biglaugh:

(perhaps not 100% correct word-by-word, but the sentiment of the comments are still there :D )

If you're not putting him on the ice to begin with...a lot, unless this illness is really holding him back, but I don't think so after 8 days.
He is playing with Filatov and either Anisimov or Mamin as their center; not exactly fourth line scrubs that one can't succeed with. And Filatov is stealing the show with the exact same linemates and icetime. You can blame Nemchinov all you want - but its Cherepanov, after effects of the illness or not, who isn't performing to his full ability. Again, there is no point in relying on a "big name" player when he is being outperformed by his lesser known peers. That being said, Cherepanov is actually coming alive somewhat as this is certainly his best game so far.

Mcguires really pisss me off with all his woohoo about Ch. The goal was basically due to him according to McG

Well, wasn't it? :)

I mean, try to score on a wrister from the blueline without someone in the face of the goalie...

On Cherepanov, I like his style too, I didn't like that 2:50 shift in the 2nd though, and I wonder what Nemchinov thought of it... (McQuire commented on Filatovs long shift, Chere stayed atleast a minute longer after Filatov went off...)

Tikhonov, someone will get the steal of the draft this summer unless someone takes him in the 1st round. He is arguably the best Russian in this tournament. Got great intensity, is really smart, exceptional vision and got a great shot too. Goes to the net. He got like no flaws, solid size et c. Good defensivly. Very smart.

He got allot of potential. A russian Tony Amonte! ;)

He's looked pretty good when he's on the ice, but isn't out there lots and lots. Maybe it's just that the Russians are rolling lines, or maybe they're using him sparingly, hard to tell. Though he did miss a shift after that crosscheck

Bodrov is the other 1988 player who really deserves to be drafted! Just awsome straightaway speed, a hard nosed fiesty style, and seemingly an inability to give up. The two comparissons to current NHL players that have been popping into my head from watching this Russian team are Bodrov stickhandling in the offensive zone like Jagr and Tikhonov stripping opposing players of the puck with his stick in shades of Datsyuk on the defensive prowl.

That was a prime example of what Russia can do against a non-physical opponent. For as much as Russia was good, the Czechs were equally as bad.
A lot of those 'dipsy-doodle' plays aren't going to work against team that won't give the Russians space to maneuver. Still, that was an impressive display of talent.

That Sayustov kid has some sick on ice vision.
