DevilBesideYou 01-02-2008, 04:42 PM Steve Cangialosi @ Game On (http://blogs.msg.com/gameon/2008/01/elias-injury-fo.html#comments): Head Coach Brent Sutter said he thoroughly enjoyed watching New Year's Day's Winter Classic, a Pittsburgh 2-1 shootout victory over Buffalo. The Sutter family, of course, was raised in bitterly cold Viking, Alberta. When I asked him how cold it would have to be for he and his brothers to stay off the outdoor ice in their younger years, he replied: "It could be 80 degrees below (zero), mom and dad just wanted us out of the house." cj225 01-02-2008, 04:47 PM http://njmg.typepad.com/devilsblog/ The outdoor game between Buffalo and Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon drew an overnight television rating of 2.6 with a five share on NBC, the NHL's highest overnight rating since Feb. 3, 1996 for regional coverage on FOX (3.0 rating/7 share). The overnight rating also surpassed Wayne Gretzky's final game on April 18, 1999 (2.5 rating/6 share). So, you can bet on the NHL doing this again. I mean I HATE domes when it comes to football, but still...putting it in the one in Toronto could be HUGE and the attendance would be sky high. I mean the weather yesterday was an added bonus, I thought, but at least with a dome you could hopefully control the ice better. My Uncle was a hockey fan for a long time, and over the last 10 years has slowly fell out of it, till the point he's at now which is basically not a fan at all. He came over during the end of the game, and was getting really into it. To me there are no negatives about this game. The NHL needs to play as many as they can, it's just a great atmosphere. Why not play the all-star game outdoors every year? Showcase the stars of the game on a bigger stage. Play a few in Canada. Boston, Detroit, New York, Chicago are all places where you can get these games going and sell them out fairly easily this time of year. I sincerely hope the NHL realizes how good this is for the league. As much as I hate those 2, Mike Wilbon on PTI even said it was great, going as far as to say "they should play one every sunday, and have it be the game of the week." Tim Cowlishaw on around the horn even mentioned a Devils vs. Rangers game at Yankee Stadium being one that would sell-out easily. TB Sheets 01-02-2008, 11:38 PM I heard a number of non-hockey fans today mention they tuned into the game and all thought it was great. Just that is a reason for the NHL to try not to drop the ball and lose potential new fans. Do this once a year and maybe those same people tune in next year. Two years in a row and maybe they'll end up checking out non-outdoor games and become fans. fortheloveof666 01-02-2008, 11:45 PM I heard a number of non-hockey fans today mention they tuned into the game and all thought it was great. Although it is highly unlikely to actually happen, they should do one in a non-hockey city that we could potentially bring a team to. I've been a big advocate for a team in Seattle, and if we could spread out there it would really draw in a lot more fans. Seahawks (or as I call them, Chickenhawks) fans are some of the loudest and passionate in the NFL. Doing an outdoor game there would be a great idea, I think. Bring down Vancouver since I'm sure plenty of fans across the border would be willing to make the drive. It's unlikely to happen, but I really think Seattle is a city that has been overlooked for the sport and it could really be great out there. They clearly did it in Buffalo because they know Buffalo could fill that stadium with its hockey fans. So I guess you're taking a chance in a non-market, but it could really pay off if it's a hit. | ||
