There's talk Senators president Roy Mlakar could be on the move. His contract expires at the end of the season and there hasn't been any announcement of an extension from owner Eugene Melnyk. There's whispers New Jersey Devils COO/president/GM Lou Lamoriello might be looking to shed one of his titles and could bring in Mlakar to act as president to help market the club in the New York area. Mlakar is on holidays and couldn't be reached for comment.

Interesting speculation.

Forgive me if this seems a little dense, but can someone please explain the role of the president of an NHL team?
<)-:**

The GM seems to make the personnel decisions...
The owner has ultimate control over the money, I would suppose...
I'm not sure what the COO does...
What do the Devils need a president for?
And what are his positions on key issues?

Interesting speculation.

Garrioch, right? Probably meaningless. It could be possible if Lou's planning his retirement, since he has every job, he has to find every replacement. Sutter was one. He still needs to replace his other two jobs. Should it come about, Sutter, I guess, would hire the next coach.

It can mean several things, but sometimes it's used to designate a team owner's right-hand man, someone who wields a lot of power like a CEO of a corporation and serves as a laison between the team owner and team General Manager. When the Devils were part of the Yankees & Nets ownership, Lou was the CEO/President of the Nets for a short period of time and he actually hired both General Manager Rod Thorn and coach Byron Scott

The team President usually oversees everything associated with a team from marketing, business reports, personnel, finance, hiring GM's, giving final approval for trades, drafting, etc. whereas a General Manager mostly handles just the day to day operations of just the team players, their contracts and trades.

For example, Jimmy Devellano is the Senior Vice President of the Red Wings and holds a lot more power than General Manager Ken Holland. It is Devellano that has made most if not all the key drafting and personnel decisions and is owner Mike Ilitich's confidant. It is really Devellano that has been the brains behind the Red Wings over the last 25 years.

But then again, it could be just a figurehead title for someone who doesn't have that much power, like an old, retired player, a son or family member of the team owner etc, or someone who is hired to focus on one thing, like marketing a team and trying to increase ticket sales, which might be the situation in this case.

There is no set definition, but being a President usually has more prestige than being a General Manager.

Usually that is.

Remember, Lou is 65 now. I think our next general manager is already behind the bench, and I don't think its going to go to Conte. Every team with a vacancy has spoken to him and since he's still here, I imagine he never wants to be a GM. Maybe Chris Lams can take over from Sutter later, or act an asst. GM in the meantime if he doesn't stay at Lowell

I honestly think that Lou's master plan is to have Sutter take over for him as GM. Lou allegedly approached Sutter for the head coach position after Larry stepped down in the middle of the 05-06 season, but Sutter passed. Since then, we know that he also passed on a few other teams, one of them being the Islanders. It seemed like he was happy coaching at the junior level and running his own team, but all of a sudden he drops all of it to come to Jersey. Perhaps it was because his son Brandon got drafted, or maybe Lou kept leaving annoying messages on his answering machine until he agreed to come over, but I think it was because Lou put more on the table than other teams...and I'm not talking about money. The second I heard about the Sutter hiring, I had a feeling that it was much more than just a new coach. Lou's not just GM/CEO/President, he's got a small stake in the ownership, so even if he's not there to man day to day operations, he's going to want to see a successful team out there. Sutter has worn multiple, scratch that--all the hats in Red Deer and he did a damn good job. Once he gets used to the administrative aspect of the NHL, I think he will step in for Lou as GM. I don't think we'll see that happen for at least another 2-3 years though.

I think he'll get the administrative part down pretty easy. I think a big part of his coaching task is getting to know the team in the lockeroom and on ice level.

We'll see what happens next offseason, that should give you some kind of clue what kind of input he really has. We've seen how Lou has worked it since the lockout, so if it's different, you probably can make the assumption that Sutter has some input, too.

If he goes back to East Jabib Alberta and isn't heard from until September, than maybe there's no smoke.
