Food for thought.
With the trade deadline on the horizon, and the Ducks rounding into shape, it seems pretty clear to me that the Ducks have to be considered one of the top contenders along with Detroit and Ottawa for the Cup.
If Sundin allowed the Leafs to trade him to one of those 3 teams and you knew that having him land in Detroit or Ottawa would hurt your Cup chances, how far would you go in the Sundin Sweepstakes? Consider that he could be resigned at 4-5 million next year for 2-3 years or he could be gone in July.
Here is are my proposal ideas-
Sundin, Ponikarovsky and our 3rd in '08 for Perry and Edmonton's 1st if Sundin signed a 2yr extension.... or..... Bobby Ryan changed for Perry if Sundin was a rental.
Or am I just another deranged Maple Leaf fan?

We are saving money to re-sign Perry. We are in the wonderful position of being good this year, yet also being good in the future, and unfortunately Sundin's intangibles don't make up for the loss of Perry. And Poni would have to be traded before he became a free agent because we couldn't afford him. Neither Perry nor Ryan is available.

The Ducks don't want Sundin, or Hossa, or anybody that significant. They don't have the payroll space to keep anyone that big next year, so any deal they make would be for a rental. They already have a top line, consisting of Getzlaf, Perry and someone (Kunitz works well, Bertuzzi seems to work OK too). And Perry is a complete non-starter. He's nearly as untouchable as Getzlaf.
They'd prefer a 2nd liner. Ponikarovsky is more the caliber of player they'd like, but I think they'd prefer someone more experienced and on an expiring contract. Just like Doug Weight, although he didn't help us "acquire" a top 6er because we sent away McDonald.
Bottom line, the Ducks will not go far in the Sundin sweepstakes. They might take him if they could get him for cheap (Edmonton's 1st, or Edmonton's 2nd plus a high prospect), but I doubt they'd be willing to offer anywhere near fair value. And he would not be re-signed. Your proposal is pretty fair though, much better than some deranged fans wanting 1st + Ryan + Mitera for only Sundin.

Agreed, imagine our future without Perry? Yikes, our organization lacks young, skilled players and losing Perry would make us a team that would need to win games 1-0 and lets face it, with our discipline problem we would be unable to play that kind of hockey.
We need Perry and also need to keep our 1st rounder this year to strengthen the depth in our organization.

Mega no thanks. I want Perry and Ryan. They are 22 and 20 respectively and both very good. Sundin could start falling off at any time. Perry already has more goals than Mats. Edmonton's pick will likely be a top 10 pick too. Next year's draft is looking fairly deep.

Sundin would only be a rental if he goes anywhere, which I sincerely doubt.
