devsfan4life 12-30-2007, 02:38 AM I would LOVE to see this guy in a Devils uniform. He is a UFA after this season and is making 1.75 mill this season (http://www.nhlscap.com/salarynumbers/buffalo.htm). Can anybody see Lou making a run at him for maybe 3-5 years at 3 - 3.5 mill a year?
BenIgnorant 12-30-2007, 10:21 AM Going to have to pay a hell of a lot more than that. I'm thinking 4.5-5.5, very likely towards the high end. I do agree that we need another puck mover, and he would be a considerable upgrade over Rachunek.
Devilsfanatic 12-30-2007, 10:37 AM Done, I'll call him and let him know to request a trade to the Devils only. :sarcasm: The Sabres aren't going to trade him, they're looking like a playoff team again. It looks like he'll be staying there till at least the end of the year. However I wouldn't be surprised if they signed him to an extension before the end of the year.
Clarkson Falls Down 12-30-2007, 10:44 AM No chance he goes for anything less that 4.5 mill. He'll probably go for about 5 per year. With the way teams overpay for free agents, I won't be surprised to see some teams overpay for Campbell. He's a good player and I'd like to have him but if Lou didn't want to pay Rafalski, why would he want to pay Campbell?
Jonathan. 12-30-2007, 10:54 AM With the defensive market as insane as it is, I'd expect guys like Campbell, Rozsival and others to get in the 5M dollar range.

Because Rafalski was 35 asking for a 6 year contract........this is a 28 year old who'll be 29.

yep. pretty much.
if he's going anywhere it's detroit...they like guys with red hair or borderline red hair. hell, didn't Avery even start there?

Indeed Avery started there. He was traded to LA in the Mathieu Schneider deal. He won't be going to Detroit though, that's for sure, I don't see what use they'd have of him if they've got Rafalski and Lidstrom already. He's probably going to stay in Buffalo it's 3.5 hours from his home town, it makes sense for him, unless he wants to move to the Leafs it'll be 2 hours.

Lou still won't pay 5 million dollars for him. It's not Lou's way.
And Rafalski's 33 and he got a 5 yr deal so your numbers are just slightly off.

Lou was trying to figure out how to pay Souray like 6 million....Campbell is a possibility. Rafalski's 34 by the way, he's born September 28th 1973. So we were both close, he'll be 39/40 by the time his contract is done and that I don't like. Give Soupy a 4-5 year deal and he hits 33/34 that sounds much better.

I'd love to have Campbell on the team because he could easily fix one of the things we're lacking: a PP Quarterback, but I'm still not sure if Lou will go for him. He's really not one for making a big FA splash. And I'm sure that some stupid team will pay a ridiculous amount of money for his services. God there are some stupid team in the league.

yeah i wasn't being serious, obviously. I think Buffalo will extend him around the deadline, if they're going to. Right now he could be a movable player for some more youth or a key veteran so they might wait it out to see how they're looking around the deadline.

We have no confirmation as to the talks between Buffalo and Campbell, but rumors are that talks are at a standstill.
I'd say Campbell wants at or slightly above 5M$/season, which I'd pay him for sure.
None Shall Pass 12-30-2007, 01:43 PM If we're going to get a Buffalo defenseman, I'd take Spacek too. That dude can score like crazy. 8 goals and 12 assists and I know he spent some time hurt this season. Nasty.

I'm not a fan of Spacek. But I'd take Campbell.
Systemfel 12-30-2007, 02:00 PM I'd rather pay an extra $1.5M and get a real No. 1 defenseman.

Is anyone going to be out there next season?
Here's a list of UFA defensemen who're worth noting:
Dan Boyle
Sheldon Brookbank (just because he's ours)
Brian Campbell
Mike Commodore
Adam Foote
Bret Hedican
Barret Jackman
Dimitri Kalinin
John-Michael Liles
Jaroslav Modry
Mike Mottau (again, because he's ours)
Brooks Orpik
Karel Rachunek
Wade Redden
Michal Rozsival
Jason Smith
Brad Stuart
James Vandermeer
Aaron Ward
Glen Wesley
On that list, I can't say I'm hugely interested in anyone more than I'd be in Campbell. I'm not a big Redden fan.

We just need to bring in a defenseman who can solidfy our PP and give us some offense from the backend. I'm confident that the Devils can make anybody into a decent defensive defenseman. Look how the Devils have turned around Mike Mottau's career and how they've made Brookbank look decent. Campbell would be just fine for our team, plus I usually don't see many #1 Dmen hit the open market.
If Boyle can come back and be healthy, he'll be in the same price range as Campbell. A little more offense from Boyle (well last year at least), not quite as solid defensively.
bense27 12-30-2007, 02:47 PM we better resign brookbank

Isn't Rachunek ours, too?
I would look at signing Brooker and Mottau before I even started talkin to Rachunek.
Stuart will be priced a bit high.
Jackman might be a nice fit here, kind of a reclamation project, don't know what the $ would be, though.
And I wouldn't be against giving Commodore another shot here, either.

I'd take a look at all of these guys. Most of them could really bring some offense from the back line. The guys like Smith and Jackman could bring an edge to the defense.
Systemfel 12-30-2007, 07:28 PM I'm not a big Redden fan.Me neither, but he has been a #1 guy on some good Ottawa teams, and he's just 30 years old.
yakitate304 12-30-2007, 08:35 PM From that list, the three main guys I would be interested in are:
Brian Campbell (or Soupy, as he's called in Buffalo, where I go to school): very good PP-QB, a good skater and... well, he has a food-related nickname
Wade Redden: I've been a fan of his for quite some time. A while ago he was THE defenseman that I wanted the Devils to look at.
Dmitri Kalinin: A really well-rounded guy who can play a physical game while still being a good puck mover. I see a lot of him because I watch most of the Sabres games, same with Campbell. Despite not putting up much in the point-department, I like the way he plays.
Besides from that, Rachunek, Boyle, Spacek and maybe Mottau are the others.

Why not? He's healthy this year and has seemed to return to his elite form.
Devils9789 12-31-2007, 12:26 AM J-M Liles is the guy i would want Lou to try and pick up. Solid PP QB.
