Sawchuck's 103

Once considered an "Unbreakable" Record now only seems a matter of time.

Here is a blurp from an ESPN article written in February of 2002 in the NHL section Titled "The 10 best unbreakable individual records"

http://espn.go.com/nhl/best/022702.html

Terry Sawchuk: 103 career shutouts
In the annals of NHL history, no goalie was more prolific at posting shutouts than Terry Sawchuk. Over 21 seasons and five teams, Sawchuk recorded 103 shutouts, making him the only man in league history to reach triple figures in that category. Only one netminder is within 10 of Sawchuk's mark -- George Hainsworth with 94 -- and the active leader is more than 40 behind the mark (Dominik Hasek has 60 shutouts through Feb. 25).

Here is another from the Hockey Digest Written in January of 2002 titled; "Unbreakable: these are the NHL records that should stand for all eternity - or at least until Wayne Gretzky's son plays in the NHL"

MOST SHUTOUTS, CAREER: TERRY SAWCHUK, 103

Patrick Roy became the NHL's all-time winningest goalie when he surpassed Sawchuk's mark of 447 wins in October 2000. But Sawchuk's shutout record, amassed over 21 seasons playing for Detroit, Boston, Toronto, Los Angeles, and the Rangers is safer than the remote control in your dad's hand on Super Bowl Sunday. Sawchuk played in an era when teams employed a more conservative style, which meant fewer Scoring chances for the opposition and better stats for goalies. Entering the 2001-02 season, Ed Belfour led all active goalies with 57 shutouts.

So sit back and enjoy. You are are wittnessing a Legend in the making.

what blows my ****ing mind about this is...at the time of the article Marty wasn't even leading the pack of actives, or even mentioned.

So basically, since 2002 he's amassed about 40 shutouts, at least? :amazed:

YUP! 44 to be exact ;) Ironically his best ever year for Shutouts (2006-07 = 12) was without Stevens, Niedermayer or Daneyko :)

2001-02 4
2002-03 9
2003-04 11
2005-06 5
2006-07 12
2007-08 3

haha, ironic indeed. I think if we stay healthy and don't lose our composure we could probably get him 3 more this year. But I don't have enough faith that he'll be able to get more than 6-8 this year.

I hope so, but with our spotty defense, it's hard to be too hopeful.

If he gets another 12 shutout season he will just break Sawchuck's record.

8 more to go to tie, 9 to beat.

Go for it in the 2nd half Marty.

People from around the league: Put an asterisk next to all his record-breaking numbers...he played for NJ behind Scott Stevens and Scott Neidermeyer. Chiodos could have put up those numbers on that team, behind those guys, playing THAT system, winning those championships, ruining hockey, boring me, did I say they ruined hockey?

Another interesting thing about his career high 12 shutout season in 2006-07;

7 of the top 10 scorers were in the Eastern Conference and the Art Ross Winner was in Brodeur's Division....14 of the top 20 scorers in the NHL were in the Eastern Conference...Again all without Stevens, Niedermayer or Daneyko

I'd make a pretty safe bet that statistics like those, will probably NEVER see the light of day when he breaks those records. In fact, I bet the fact the season with his greatest shutout total won't even be looked at as anything. The only thing people will look at is the 90's and early 00's. The trap, the defense, etc.

I know Marty mentioned how he loved not having as much pressure being out here and that it doesn't bother him at all. But when he does truly define himself as the greatest goaltender to ever play (at least in winning and shutouts) he'll still be largely overlooked and unlike Sawchuk or Roy, he probably won't get the same praise or recognition.

Some will, but you can probably bet, most won't. Because everyone wants a reason or an excuse to act like he's not as good as he is or seems and that it's all because of (insert any number of redundant excuses).

Brodeur would actually register his 40th career shutout the day after the original February 26, 2000 posting of the article.

Marty's pace for this season is 6.8 shutouts. If he does finish 2007-08 with seven, it would put December 2008 on a collision course for two of the most prestigious goaltending records, wins and shutouts. It would be magical if he could either tie or pass both Roy and Sawchuk in the same game.

Wow...that would be pretty sick to do both in one game. But for the sake of history, I hope it's an incredibly intense game where HE has to be the backbone of the team. Not just a game where the whole team does it's job and he can make 15-20 low % saves and coast to the SO/Win.
